I am trying to mindfully not support publishers who platform hate, intolerance, which Substack does. So I am not going to like, or boost, a post which links there..

I am thinking back to the Spring 2025 elecction, and before that to the late fall to winter of 2024-2025. As I recall it, at that time the Canadian pollster trade group expelled Angus Reid for cause; basically determining outcomes before conducting the survey. And my recollection was the pollsters as a block got everything wrong, with one or two switching in the last weeks.
Reid, imo, is same class as Fraser Inst.

But the challenges from the D.C. and Federal appellate courts, which deal with thornier issues than courts 1-11, suggest they, alone, need the attention of 9 justices.
That would suggest 35 justices, as the upper end of the spectrum.
This was the gist of what I found a couple of years ago. I expect the number should be in the 20s, at least, but I think the courts of the nation should be making the decisions as to how many, and how best to organize it.

But how many? The starting number is usually 13 - Thomas Jefferson's connection to the courts of appeal. But as *certiorari* has doubled the load, which suggests 26 to some scholars.
Jonathon Turley thought *de minimis*, in 2012, was 19. (http://www.washingtonpost.com/politics/white-house-lawmakers-prepare-for-supreme-court-health-care-ruling/2012/06/14/gJQAzsKldV_story.html) His study of the topic has resulted in higher and lower numbers since then.

What is rarely appreciated is most cases reaching the Supreme Court are business cases. This is why caseload is more related to GDP than it is to population. The USA is currently the largest economy in the world by capitalization. Its court system is also the largest by volume.
It has the smallest ratio of justices.
Logically, it should have the same ratio, possibly a higher ratio as the complexity of its precedence is likely comparatively higher.

More importantly was SCotUS gaining *certiorari*, to review administrative bodies as well as lower courts. It alone has doubled SCotUS cases as plaintiffs apply for such reviews.
Finally, Administrative law - legislation governing executive branch agencies - has grown over the past centuries. Remember, originally there were almost no such agencies.

In 1807 Thomas Jefferson tied the number of justices to the number of Circuit Courts, then 7. The circuit court responsibilities are now largely in the US courts of appeal, of which there are 13, with two of them (D.C. and Federal) being notably larger.
With the change in 1911, the district courts also had expanded responsibilities and case loads.

Language is wonderful! When you have a community speaking your language, you naturally share and develop your culture and worldviews together.
But humans are intelligent, which is also a euphemism for lazy. It is just easier to stay in your comfort zone, going to shops where everyone speaks your language, join political parties in your cultural group, etc.

The electoral college is an anachronism with no particular rôle today, other than as a risk to the electoral process.
The reason for #4 is the ratified treaties. The Constitution lists them as 'Law of the Land'.
Those ratified treaties include the Geneva Conventions and Protocols, the Charter of the United Nations, and the Charter of NATO, amongst others. Enforcing them would, for example, have seen M Netanyahu arrested and tried, rather than fêted.

Mandatory voting is easily enforceable; the current system already records *if* you vote. The system in Australia works reasonably well; it is easy enough to be excused from voting, but because almost everyone *does* vote it is a community event, usually known as 'sausage day' because they are given away at polling stations.
SCOTUS 2000 decision over-ruled the Constitution, affirming Federal over State in elections.

Switzerland is less homogenous than NYC, w/4 official languages - German, French, Italian, and Romansch and 26 Cantons (think burroughs, only bigger and often geographically divided ) But it is smaller in population.

32 came from a research study of national supreme courts in the world. The last time the number of justices was changed was in the 1800s - they **reduced** the number.
I agree the constitution should be challenging to change, but because of involvement. In the current system it is artificial hurdles, and they favour politicians. Perhaps instead it might be similar to Switzerland, where constitutional changes must be approved by national plebiscite.

Third, modernize all three branches.
1. SCoTUS should have ~32 justices to manage the caseload.
2. Constitutional Convention: it needs to be easier to update like more modern Constitutions, and untouchable by politicians.
3. Modernize elections - no electors, proportional representation, mandatory voting. States, not Fed, conduct elections.
4. Enforce the law of the land: ratified treaties, legislation, and the Constitution.

First, it dates to the 1970s, when the Koch brothers wrote their manifesto and began working to implement it.
Second, if the citizens can hold it, the Republic has the tools to restore itself. I would organize locally, unionize/federate with others, and seek guidance from lawyers. Win the fall election. decapitate both parties (not their members,) and impeach members of SCoTUS who have violated their oath.

As a sailor who has floated most of the oceans at one point or another… I do not see any part of the west coast of Canada as safe for shipping at the Panamax size or higher, including Vancouver and Seattle. The waters are narrow, high latitude tides & currents, topography mountainous with an 8-month rainy season complicating the water flows. Heavy commercial and private traffic from small to large vessels, barge and log booms throughout.
For oil, the risk is simply too high.

My experience has been a mix of widths, depending on origin country. Particularly with upholstery (from Italy) and outdoor fabrics (Sunbrella) the widths all seemed in SI? otoh flannel, quilting prints are solidly imperial (bdum-tish.)

Shouldn't party leaders be chosen by the party's loyal base? But then I think—any party leader could become Prime Minister.
And pretty soon I am in knots, mentally.
Is it normal to join parties whether or not you strongly identify with their core political point of view? By joining is one promising to vote solely for that party? Can one join multiple parties at the same time? How long does party membership last? Are you on party donation lists forever after?

It seems to me, you aren't saving the Republicans, nor the country.
In practice, unaligned voters tend to swing the results. It shouldn't be this way. The voting system is the well-known and -documented issue. And the dominant parties both prevent it being improved with evidence-based changes.
This being the case, citizens need to prepare for the right to vote being eliminated. Their labour will be their last tool. #GeneralStrike.

Quick question: who pays for the roads?
According to the AASHO Road Test heavily loaded lorries can cause 10,000x the damage/maintenance cost of passenger vehicles, and 7,800x if at normal loads.
That is usually another huge cost distortion to allow road haulage to not pay its own way.

I suspect, for most people whose net worth is in the top 10%, they have very few real assets in their own name. Most will be owned by holding companies, which in turn they own. It is rather like bullion: few people stockpile it at home; instead they own paper which says they own gold stored in Fort Knox.
Ultimately it means *they* are mobile, and they can trade/sell their shell company shares if that makes financial sense for their goals.

It applies to how much a person is worth, including their properties and investments, rather than the gains they realize within the year.

Applying a wealth tax indicates a lack/loss of control of the governance of a region by those with extreme wealth.
As wealth is, in part, accumulated as a measure of power *and as a defense*, this appears threatening to those who have a superabundance of it - even if the tax is not particularly noticeable by them.

While Bill C-5 has been passed, it has substantial legal flaws which may not pass constitutional, treaty, and charter challenges. At least portions of this mammoth bill appear to be illegal power grabs.
People who are opposed to it should be coordinating with like-minded people to ensure at least those portions are struck by the courts.

I recall, hazily, a school lecture about this focused on considering wages as a form of dividend. Where the shareholder extractions remained under 14-17%, the system was stable. As profits exceeded this point, it inevitably destabilized, as workers could no longer maintain SoL and would rebel.

The real problem, imo, is data centres doing it wrong.
The average internal combustion engine uses a closed-loop cooling system in which the coolant absorbs heat and then exchanges it with air. Most buildings taller than 6 stories do the same.
Yet somehow we think it is okay for data centres to pump fresh, potable water through their cooling systems and dump it into whatever local drainage system.
Make 'em take care of their waste. All of it. Including waste heat.

The correct approach to "stop the unamerican, illegal, and unconstitutional actions he takes" is to impeach the President.
Yes, really, that is the **correct** response. It means he should **no longer** be President, not because a lot of people oppose him, but _because of his actions as President._
All we need is for the House of Representatives to act on their Constitutional responsibility, and the Senate to consider their arguments as statesmen and jurists.

The second issue is: why is all this water required?
Data centres use water to move heat. Taking that heat and releasing it into the lakes will cause the downstream lakes to be too warm, likely killing much of the aquatic biome which has developed to meet natural seasonal highs and lows, and is already struggling with human-caused climate change.
There are many other issues as well, but these are the top of mind for me.

Sadly, problem not solved.
First, you are talking about a region where water is actually a major problem - even though the "Great Lakes" sound great on paper, surrounding urban centres are drawing more water from the system than is naturally being replaced. All the great lakes are trending lower over time. It is not being addressed because the lakes are shared with Canada, and that means federal negotiations, and the USA has, traditionally, not done this well.

In Cowichan--Malahat--Langford they chose LPC versus the 4-time winning and incumbent NDP.
But also, note that Conservative lead. In a riding which I think last voted Cons for Mulroney, and whose largest demographic is the Cowichan nation.
Maybe, just possibly, perhaps, 338 is providing shit weighting because of projects like SmartVoting?

He wasn't afraid to turn down the media coalition debates in both French and English in 2015.
His acceptance of the TVA debate was seen at the time as being due to too close to the election date to have much impact, and because only a small percentage of the QC market would tune in.
It is noteworthy that he lost that election, and M Trudeau was able to use refusal to debate against him.

You're correct, and I was wrong about that.
When I went looking for it, I was reminded of the private debates which happened, and recalled an argument at the time his campaign was not participating unless they got the questions before hand - due the many scandals they didn't want to talk about (e.g. paying Duffy's fines.)
But I could not find archives stating this.

It is not factually accurate that "all leaders agreed to TVA debates in previous campaigns." M Harper rather infamously refused all debates, as I recall, in one campaign.
One might almost assume they were smearing the candidate.

I helped sail a boat from Hawai'i to the San Juan Islands. I have hiked the Sunshine Coast trail. I have worn through the bottom bracket of a bicycle, and put 10s of thousands of km on two human-powered wheels
I cannot change the world's views about air travel. The time differential is just too great for most people.
But in a couple years we will be heading back to the EU to volunteer with WHO, and we plan to train to the east coast, and catch a ship for the crossing. Because I *can*.

I see it as abuse. The individuals have not enough experience to realize they are ordered to do immoral/unethical things, including crimes. They cannot foresee the life risks they are taking. They each believe they are immortal.
This is why wars are mostly fought by the youth, under the orders of the old and corrupt. Adults are able to see refusing is ultimately less harmful to themselves.

I have been thinking about how to describe the international situation - which appears to be rather like the chaos leading up to the Great War - including the “splendid isolation”. The only phrase which is consistently accurate is “undeclared world war”. And how that influences economics.
Or, that is, how economics fails to admit there is war, despite evidence to the contrary.

Heh, before I go read the article, a comment on the 'side effect'…
I do not vote for a party, or a party leader.
If my local candidate is a dud, I do not vote for them. I will vote for a candidate whose judgement I respect, & has shown the independence to abstain, over one who I know is not good but whose party affiliation is better aligned.
So, no, ranked ballot first choice does not necessarily indicate political party support.
Westminster kinda sucks.

Western Governments told their citizens to stop using their phones as phones: use encrypted apps online for making private calls, sending text-based messages, or sending files like photos.
They said this because they are at #war. We are at war.
You need to acknowledge this. Start acting like everything matters.
