I love video games in part for letting us take part in our antisocial desires. It's healthy sublimation, and I think we've all had our moments where we wanted to lose ourselves and go full Karen.
They're video games! Nobody's going to complain if I get Nazeem eaten by a dragon, or brutally reach 5 stars in GTA, or turn an entire mall into a supersite of crazed destruction. And this looks like a stylish option indeed.

One of my favourite examples of this is Etrian Odyssey, which was very much inspired by Wizardry as opposed to the games which'd made up the vast majority of 'jRPGs' from, say, Square, Enix, or Atlus. You even draw the map! But many will still call it a jRPG.
(Even Final Fantasy drew points from Ultima. It's kind of a miss to pigeonhole games stylistically like that.)

What frustrates me terribly is that this is the exact playbook the US have used in myriad countries, typically Latin America and 'third-world' locations, for the last *70 years*. One should always be careful about speculative investors, because the market doesn't like to play nice. A big win can fuel a dozen minor losses, and timing is everything.
Plus, ultracrepidarianism hits hard, and knowledge about one aspect of the system does not specifically imply perfect knowledge of all aspects.
With that *said*, I do think this bubble is going to pop and pop hard. I just think that trying to nail down the exact timing is a mug's game: it could be tomorrow, or they could somehow keep it going for another year with federal bailouts, or any number of other means to keep looping the money around and milking the whales.

There is a not insignificant segment of the New Atheists who *have* to believe that there are no such thing as qualia, because otherwise a great many of their assertions would collapse.
From there it's not exactly a long drive to get to the notion that one person's lived experience must be intrinsically comprehensible to another, and from there it's a skip and a jump to some of the very worst examples of human behaviour, starting with victim-blaming and jumping all the way to straight-laced eugenics.

One of my big takeaways here is that the workers care about the quality of their work (if they have any say in it), the middlemen care about the quality, the *consumers* certainly care about quality...
The only people who don't care about quality are the people who are at the top, and who never use the stuff.

A reminder here that arbitration always favours the abuser -- which, in the case of a corporate/individual dispute, is almost invariably the corporation.
Background: Air Canada decided to skirt labour laws by saying that flight attendants aren't on the clock until the plane leaves the runway. This, combined with the fact that the contractual pay did not keep up with inflation, has led to a strike against the company, well-known for being abusive and dismissive towards employees and customers alike.
12 hours after the strike began, the Liberal government, known well for sucking off Air Canada's fuel line, declared that forced arbitration would need to be done.
The union saw that arbitration would, *by its nature,* favour Air Canada and fuck over their members, and said, 'No.' So good on them.
To those who've had their flights cancelled by Air Canada, remember that they legally *have* to reimburse you for a flight on another airline unless you accept another option, so don't accept a refund when the replacement might be more expensive.

I find it deeply amusing that some of the niche RPGs, such as Etrian Odyssey, and quite a few *bigger* names, such as Shin Megami Tensei, drew a boatload of inspiration from the *Wizardry* series, released in the US starting in 1981. Even Final freaking Fantasy drew massive inspiration from *Wizardry*, though of course there were plenty of other sources.

Well beyond. Every single time I've seen means testing introduced, with 'waste' cited as a reason, the real reasons behind it are greed, spite, and a deep and abiding desire to cause harm.
It's also a quick road to nepotism and corruption. Who's going to be *doing* these audits? Do they have ties to Calandra? What sort of advantage would Calandra have in pushing this?
And wouldn't the money for expensive and wasteful audits be better spent on propping up a flagging provincial school system which has had decades of Conservative cuts to contend with?

Thank you for an excellent article.
A parallel feels like it might be made to the Year 2000 bug. Those of us who were around (and sophonts) back then remember it pretty clearly, the various different ways in which the banks and other financial institutions, retailers everywhere, software developers, *everyone* was scrambling to ensure that the rollover from 99 to 00 didn't cause massive disruption across the board.
These days, in the cultural milieu, it's regarded as a bit of a joke, a potential explosion which turned out to be a fart. But that's because *the preparations worked.* People, seeing the world work the day after December 31, 1999, shrugged and smiled and figured it wasn't that big a deal after all, the systems managed to hold together.
And that was *entirely* the wrong lesson to learn. Come January 19, 2038, we're going to be having the exact sort of thing occur again, this time with the *UNIX Epoch*, and it's going to require even *more* effort and work to get over the edge of the hurdle.
Of course, it's not a perfect analogy by any stretch. Vaccination is a matter of making sure that the public are protecting one another, that we all take our part in signing the social contract seriously. Financial institutions and similar groups did work together to preserve the public interest, but more in service to themselves surviving another day. (Though that loops back around.)
In either case, though, what we need to see is that disaster is not optional: it's inevitable. Things *will* go wrong, and we rely upon one another to help minimize the harms, to limit the extent of the damage, and to rebuild afterwards. We can't kick that responsibility down the road, not truly, without increasing everyone's suffering a hundredfold, including quite probably our own. And externalizing the cost of survival is absolutely kicking the can down the road.

Cheers! Basically, those 7 skills you pick are what determine your level, *but* that also means that if you start with skills you never use, you'll be able to limit your leveling appropriately. Tapewolf/Doug the Eagle did an *anti*-walkthrough which began with this very step.
Of course, that means that if you didn't pick, say, Armorer, you can go out, get some of the materials you need, and powerlevel so you're *not* overgeared...

That... sounds like they may have kept the leveling system from the original.
What's your class set to? When you level in Oblivion based on your class, it increases your stats a little, and ranks up the monsters as well: your class is tied to ONLY the skills you picked at chargen.
If it is like the original, you can focus on your non-class skills to bolster those for a while... and you only level when you sleep, as well.
Oblivion's leveling system is largely regarded as a bad idea and angered a great many people.

Seeing people panicking over nVidia's stock dropping like a stone at the news about an open-source LLM comparable to ChatGPT but without a country's worth of electricity needed, and I'm just shaking my head.
How is it even slightly possible that in this day and age, with THIS many crashes in the last twenty-plus years, that people still can't recognize a bubble when they see it? How? All of this, the billions of dollars wasted on *nothing*, had every hallmark of a bubble if not an outright pyramid scheme scam. It was *always* going to pop like a helium balloon at a porcupine's birthday party. Oppressive power structures are *inherently* illogical, and as communication depends upon logic, they must thus destroy how we communicate.

It could well be argued that Jordan Neely's life was worth *more* than the CEO's, as while very few people opt to be homeless, the CEO's decision on where to go with his life and his copious opportunities led to the deaths of thousands upon thousands of people. Given a chance, Neely may have helped many folks; the CEO, given that chance, did the opposite.
The acquittal of Neely's murderer yesterday shows what a shambles the court system is in terms of racism, ableism, and the criminalization of being poor.

*Beyond Good and Evil*, anyone? I know, that's the easy mode of preferred Ubisoft publications from that era, but it's hard not to do an Ubisoft retrospective without *that* one in particular, as I know that every time a BG&E2 announcement drops we typically hold our breath waiting for the 'well, we were just joking' shoe to drop, in vain hopes that *this* time they might actually mean it.
Also, I guess I don't *hate* open world and crafting mechanics, but it really feels like they're not in service to a larger gameplay: they *are* the gameplay, and everything else falls second to that, including story. And of course, yes, *entirely* overdone. Just like 'roguelite' card-based games these days...

I keep reminding myself that when the Haitian community began to set up in Springfield, Ohio, they didn't just improve the place as a whole -- they *revived* it, a once-dying town finding new life and prospects thereby. Years of literal stagnation turned into a second chance, because it turns out that immigration and movement are impetuses for positive change.
And then along come Trump and the other Project 2025 fascists, demonizing the people who saved Springfield from becoming a ghost town, all to score political points.
One more example of how they're perfectly content to hurt *everybody*, because it's all they know how to do.

Extending means testing on governmental programs like this always feels like they're insisting the program, *itself*, is an unnecessary burden -- not to mention those who rely upon it. Doing so to a *pensions* program is not a particularly good look for Labour, who have been justifiably called 'Tory Light' for the last number of years (at *least* since the Cameron era), and seem to be doing everything they can to fulfill the appellation.

Perhaps one of my favourite parts of all this is that, when Biden was the presumptive candidate -- being the incumbent and all -- a debate was a no-win for him. Trump would clomp onto the stage and fling shit, and Biden's calm responses would be decried because of a stutter or his age. In contrast, Harris' fire, smirks, and thinly-veiled taunts render this a no-win for *Trump*, a man whose bluster and bluff no longer cover up the clear fact that he's a weak, ineffectual, incompetent puppet.
The Harris campaign's message right now is attack, ridicule, belittle, and *educate* -- and it's working very, very well. The Republicans, coming off a diet where the Democrats are always 'above reproach' in their game, don't know what to do with someone *else* wearing rhetorical brass knuckles.

I would love to see more RTS games with a cartoony artstyle.
Have you perhaps played Starcraft with the Carbot animations on? It's a small mod which turns it into a very silly parody, and works out pretty well.
Alternately, I can suggest the classic turn-based strategy "Moonbase Commander", though that one was more a cute abstraction than it was a *generally* cute game.

Similarly, there's no need to dig into metaphorical dogwhistles like "Sharia Law" when we have a perfectly fine historical background sitting right there in elementary school. Those Puritans? Yeah, the folks who killed off the vast, vast majority of indigenous folks and forced the ones who survived into a living hellscape, who used the Bible to justify slavery when their supposed savior would have vomited at the notion, who forced everyone into a Calvinist belief and were the central basis for today's other religion, the worship of the capitalists burning down the world as we speak?
Yeah, we have *plenty* of examples sitting in our own history without having to insinuate that some 'other' is responsible for today's evils.
