i suspect it goes back to 1997, when the Tories looked like they'd never be elected again, and a generation of young centre-right wingers who would otherwise have joined, and formed the centrist wing of, the Tories at this point, instead saw New Labour as a more reliable path to power. except, of course, then they ran into the fact that quite a lot of Labour supporters are actually not at all right wing... and set about ensuring that the left of Labour never got near power again. they encountered a setback when Corbyn proved surprisingly popular with the country at large; but they more than capitalised on it when he turned out to be crap at actually being a leader.
essentially they won the next battle in the continuing Labour civil war, getting their glove puppet elected and driving anyone who wasn't fully signed up to the Torification of Labour out of the party wherever possible... and that's where we are now. they may lose the next election, but if the destruction of Labour as a political force is the price of that, it's worth it.
unfortunately, that left the Tories without a centrist wing at the very point they needed it most - those chickens have now come home to roost, with the Tories looking by turns extremist and irrelevant, and the most likely next leader of that party openly advocating a "reverse" takeover of Nigel Farage's nasty little band of fascists.

whether created in a fit of enthusiasm from an edit of a Wikipedia page (it's certainly Wikipedia-styled, but then why not give the source page?) or as an attempt at disinformation, i don't know. but the simple fact is that at this point in time, they're not even taking membership fees (though they are soliciting donations), so "signing up" is the equivalent of joining a mailing list.

what pisses me off about change.org, even more than the idea that anything they do actually matters, is that it's not enough that i sign a petition - i have to be nagged about sharing and donating until i tell them i've had enough. when i say "no, don't contact me any more" they pop up a box saying "please reconsider". when i click to sign, they say "there's still more you need to do!" even though NO there fucking ISN'T...
it feels uncomfortably like "take a free personality test today!" sometimes. and i don't like that vibe at all.

this was what happened over the course of the last Labour government - in the beginning they did what they could for people under the table while keeping the right wing press happy and quiet with the necessary spin, but as time went on they started to believe their own publicity and forget about the whole "making people's lives better" bit. what we have now is the people who caught that tail end of things and forgot that anything at all preceded it. plus all the people who would have joined the Conservative Party had it looked at all electable before David Cameron, and who saw Labour as their path to power instead. (you can tell that this robust, savvy political judgement of theirs lives on today...)

it really is remarkable. statistically speaking, the amount of claimant fraud in the disability benefits system is zero. it's literally undetectable.
whereas 68% of appealed refusals are overturned - and even a disabled MP who was refused PIP didn't feel confident enough to appeal. that's an ASTONISHING degree of error. indeed... it's a high enough degree of error to constitute deliberate obstructionism.
what's another word for that? ah yes, fraud. so actually, there IS a high degree of fraud in the PIP system; it just goes the other way. the DWP is systematically defrauding claimants of their entitlement.
but you'll NEVER see that reported anywhere. you'll see the high appeal rate reported on occasion if you're lucky - but you'll never see it expressed as anything other than "oh dear, it's so terribly unfortunate that so many people are being refused benefits..." it's not a misfortune, any more than wage theft is a misfortune. it's fraud, plain and simple. people are being defrauded of money to which they are legally entitled by a system that is designed to do exactly that.

tbh the NetBSD position - that AI generated code cannot possibly be regarded as anything other than tainted, purely from a licence point of view, and thus must be precluded from their codebase, is the minimum¹ credible position for any open source codebase to adopt. not doing so is just storing up trouble for the future, when someone finally does force an AI company to disclose exactly what its LLMs were trained on.
it's ironic, but not altogether surprising, that going open source is probably the best way to ensure you're not running autocorrect-generated slushcode.

sadly that kind of phoenix company bullshit is a common feature of, at least, UK contract law, and it's usually done to shirk debts - limited liability companies don't pay their bills, go into liquidation, then a new company arises that somehow has all the same people in it, but none of them can be pursued for the bills. a little overlap, and the old company can "sell" all its assets to the new company for a token sum before going into liquidation.
but of course, those assets are usually physical. not licences to intellectual property specifically written to be easy to terminate! oops... someone wasn't paying attention there

it only really works when you have an a balance of power between the houses, and a head of state who is actually prepared to use their powers when the situation calls for it. unfortunately, Westminster no longer has either - if the King did exercise his theoretical power to dissolve parliament without the agreement of the PM there really would be a constitutional crisis in the UK; and the House of Lords has steadily lost any actual power to stop harmful legislation - the most it can do is delay it for a year, which is only useful when a general election is imminent. in practice, the Commons is an elective dictatorship these days, and nobody seems very interested in changing that as soon as they're in a position to do so :-(

that's Microsoft's fault. Charles Simonyi, iirc, brought Hungarian notation with him from Xerox, where it was helpful for programming an Alto in BCPL; from there it spread throughout MS, but the Windows division didn't seem to understand that the point of it was to code intent rather than, you know, what could already be gleaned from the type system... and it's their misunderstanding of it that caught on more broadly - so much more broadly that people are still doing this shit today :-(

it might not just be the FPU performance. chucking four singles around eats four times as much memory bandwidth and cache as a uint32, and i believe both are fairly constrained resources on a Pi 400 (and, well, everything else). it all adds up... which is to say, if you don't feel up to rearchitecting the whole library, then you might get most of the way there by simply¹ changing it to store its buffers as RGBA8 and only convert to floats to manipulate them

weird. the Raspberry Pi 400 had the potential to be (a) everything that Eben started the Pi project for in the first place, and (b) this generation's ZX81, only cheaper and SOOOO much better - but that never happened, and i can only assume it's because the Pi Foundation lost sight of what it was doing, and why, even way back somewhere around the start, when it somehow failed to make a machine that booted straight into an interactive, exploratory programming environment
anyway, they can currently be had for less than £60 - a quarter of the ZX81's launch price, after inflation! - and almost uniquely of the Pis, they don't need a whole load of additional kit before they're usable. just a power supply... and if you're VERY lucky, you might even be able to get that from a USB socket of the TV you plug one into ;-)

the Raspberry Pi 5 (a 4-way 2.4GHz A-76) seems to be on a par with an Intel N100 (4-way 3.4GHz Gracemont), so i guess the answer is "only competitive with low-end cores"?
if you have access, the Coremark and Coremark Pro suites are freely git-clone-able, and are probably the best way to compare single cores... and how well they scale in multi-core configs too

i'm going to make a radical claim:
the "phone" has basically ceased to exist.
these devices we call phones? they're pocket computers that just happen to have cellular connectivity. they should be treated as such - which means open specs, unlockable booting, replaceable operating systems.
if you need to blob the cellular bit for regulatory approval, fine, do that, but agree a standard interface to it (like AT commands for old modems, or the interface to the Pi's GPU capabilities) that all OSes can use on all cellular devices. but there's no excuse for locking down any of the rest of the device, is there?

surprise - on a decently fast hard disk, PC/GEOS runs like a dream! (the VIA Eden U4200 in my T510 is apparently 788.8 times the speed of a base XT... which makes it rather slow for anything modern, and an absolute dream for anything DOS)

i had asthma, and was generally unfit, before, and occasionally had trouble breathing when doing activity.
post-covid, i now have regular trouble breathing when doing activity... but it's qualitatively different - it's almost like my lungs do less well at absorbing oxygen when i'm under load
i'm not worried yet, but... i am also noticing a marked disinclination to leave the flat for any reason

it really is :-( one way around it is to start up an instance of Firefox in VNC (possibly without a window manager) and then access it on every machine - but that also means finding a way to broadcast audio, because VNC doesn't handle audio. RDP does, but i've never yet found a satisfactory RDP X server.
i think the last time i did that kind of thing i just went "fuck it" and ran Firefox on a Windows box, which i shared using rdesktop. that actually worked...

what i don't understand is that everyone's acting like this election is absolutely critical, but as far as i can tell the Republicans in many key states have stitched everything up to the point where they're basically going to ignore the outcome of the popular vote altogether and send a slate of Republican collegiates to vote
in which case, there's already no point. it's going to be blatant election theft, but it's not clear what can be done about that - and SCOTUS is already stacked with people who will rubber-stamp it

trouble is, lying is really quite difficult for autistic folk... it's not a defining characteristic, but it does seem to be relatively common
what might work better is someone compiling a database of logins for free wifi, so that if you go to the mall you can just check the database, grab a login nobody's using, and put it back on the peg when you leave. an app could help with this, by automatically doing that when the wifi connection goes away - and automatically creating a new login where none are available using fictional details
...i might be overthinking this ;-)

increasingly, i think i'm losing interest in an "open source" movement that panders only to the interests of businesses who don't want to debug their own software. or a "free software" movement which explicitly refuses to care about ethics - up to and including the ethics of its founder
and i'm sick of this chorus of people saying it's not ok to put things like "don't use this software to turn a profit" or "you are forbidden from using this software in any way that facilitates crimes against humanity", because "oh, but it's not open source then". if your definition of open excludes - no, *forbids* - a moral dimension, then maybe it's just wrong. if forbidding people from using your source code to cause industrial grade harm is somehow controversial, maybe the bathwater has drowned the baby.
i like linux because i can drive it. but i'd like it way more if it forbade arms dealers or repressive regimes from benefiting from it, and if a capable OS ever shows up that does that, i'll be switching.
and for anyone who's going to come along and say "oh, but what about source code that forbids trans folk from using it?" i mean fine, i won't use that shit, but... look at the moral equivalence you just drew - do you expect me to believe you're "just asking the question"?
