this was what happened over the course of the last Labour government - in the beginning they did what they could for people under the table while keeping the right wing press happy and quiet with the necessary spin, but as time went on they started to believe their own publicity and forget about the whole "making people's lives better" bit. what we have now is the people who caught that tail end of things and forgot that anything at all preceded it. plus all the people who would have joined the Conservative Party had it looked at all electable before David Cameron, and who saw Labour as their path to power instead. (you can tell that this robust, savvy political judgement of theirs lives on today...)
