The new world needs a new kind of hero.
Hardware failure. But also failure on my part in that I kept procrastinating mirroring the drive.
Well, it was a drive failure, and the static channel backups were what enabled me to claim the SATs. That, and honest channel partners. But the node was run in a physical proximity to me on my hardware. The rescue happened on a VPS in Europe.

I think that for bitcoin, there is never a rush to upgrade your node for any reason. I can even upgrade to a new version exactly three years after its initial release and be perfectly fine.
When drama like this is happening, you can't tell which side is lying to you until several years pass to let the lies melt away. By default, it's better to just distrust both camps until time kills one or both.
