My issue is I want to enable automatic update, with logging. However, I want the logging to be in its own file, and a new file for each day. Old logs will be removed to make way for new logs (keeping old logs for no more than a week). The system should also clean house, that includes removing old revisions too.
The logs generate. The system claims it updates. But I don't see a new revision added to the boot menu. Furthermore, I do not see old revisions removed either.

I suppose it would not be as much of an issue, if there was a little bit better documentation. I have lost count of the conflicting documentation, or often out of date documentation, I have stumbled up.
(Linux is used commonly in developing countries, so I couldn't call it a first world problem.)

YES -- That is the point I have been trying to make, and it is only getting worse.
I started working for Meta, nearly the end of 2020, during the pandemic. And while the company was not perfect, it is nothing like how when I started, as things have gotten so much worse. And when Donald Trump took office, while most of you were watching things happen quickly in full view of the public, a lot has been going on behind the scene, and not just at Meta.
A few months ago, if people were paying attention (they likely were not), a lot of corporations, Meta included, started sending wave after wave of notification about their policies changing. Everything from Meta to X, Twitch, Google, but also to Uber, Lyft, DoorDash, Instacart, Amazon, Walmart, Target, and the list goes on and on.
I cannot speak for all of those places, and sure, it sounds crazy (I know), but we're sending the National Guard and now the US Marines into our streets, after unarmed man and women. The press are being shot at on live TV. It is crazy time!

It was not long ago, most banks here would not load without IPv4. Many government websites were only IPv4 too. I do not know if Charter Spectrum (my old ISP), ever added IPv6 to their website. It really is a big problem here. Most of the sites today that work with IPv6 only proxy the traffic to their IPv4 access point.
It remains a mystery why IPv6 is not serious here. 🤷

Much of the United States relies heavily on IPv4 still. So companies like Microsoft, who own GitHub, do not take IPv6 seriously.

When I moved in here 8 years ago, this was all sand. My next door neighbor said one of the previous people used it as a Baseball field. I came here and dug up most the yard, replaced much of the soil, aerated and replanted a mix of grass and clover seed. The old property management also did not want us actively watering the yard, and that only made things harder.
But I eventually, through a lot of hard work and determination, finally got my yard to turn green. However, this year, I am noticing significant dead spots (as seen in the photos). Instead of spending more time and money (especially money), I have focused on growing trees for now. I am hoping the coverage (in time) will make it easier to reclaim my yard. Because right now, the continuous, never ending sun I suspect is why things dry out and compact.

Well, my Walmart order looks like a confusing "hot mess".
I allowed substitutions for most of my items (the best match). But not everything, because there were some items I either wanted a refund or pick something comparable (that I picked). They seemed to have ignored that and made their own substitutions in some circumstances, and at least 6 items are marked both shopped, but also "We're sorry, we had to cancel these items."
It will be interesting to see what I actually get. 🤔

You did not sign up to use the Internet. You dialed the local access numbers and without any username or password, you were online. No subscription required.
This was a very brief time during the start of the Internet. When the older network that it replaced was being retired. When I was young, the early network was called the "proto net" (not it's actual name, just the slang term people used to describe the network before).

Linux mascot history 101
In the beginning, before Linux used a penguin for their mascot, there was a fox. To be more specific, a female humanoid fox. This human face to Linux at the time was controversial because shortly after the creation of the character, Rule 34 of the Internet took place.
For those who do not know, Rule 34 is an Internet meme which claims that some form of pornography exists concerning every possible topic. And with a female humanoid fox, it should not be hard to imagine the furry type photos that started amounting pretty quickly.
It was for this reason, that a genderless, more natural mascot for Linux was adopted.
Sometime afterward, the original artist of this character publically spoke out in support of gay rights. In the 1990s, this was still extremely controversial and only furthered many Linux developments to further distance themselves from the Linux Fox character.
Although the Internet from that point forward associated the Fox as a female lesbian (again, Rule 34). Around 2010 or so, Trans Rights became both a political and social issue, and the Linux Fox character was often associated with the Trans Rights movement.
And now you know the brief history of the original proposed Linux mascot. But being this is the internet, so much is lost in cyberspace with time (good thing I have a good memory).

Fedora, in my opinion, would be the most user-friendly distro.
But at the moment, I'm trying to find more distros outside Us Jurisdiction, which adds to the complication. I agree with @npub1ns5…ah7f easement that NixOS that if you're going in blind, it will be "something else". Still, there are not many non-US distros to pick from, and so I am working on making it super user-friendly.
For example, a lot of documents for many Linux distros tell you to disable secure boot (Fedora, you can keep that enabled). But they all assume you know how to do that (disable secure boot). I'm not assuming anything in my effort to make it easier https://codeberg.org/Linux-Is-Best/NixOS_Configuration/src/branch/main/Disable_Secure_Boot_and_Boot_USB.md

You know what you're doing, which means, you'll be just fine, plus you customized your system so you're not using their stock config, anyway.
But for a newbie, who has never used Linux, coming directly from Microsoft Windows - Mint can be an absolute nightmare.
I worked in Consumer IT, and if the consumer wanted to try Linux, part of our jobs was to help them do so. We had a few distros that we would recommend, and anyone using Mint, switched back to Windows in record time.
Debian, now that they've embraced non-free (not just the separate ISO as a side-project) is certainly improving for their newbie friendliness. It is not there yet, but it would still be better for someone wanted to use Linux, and has some technical skill.

2025-05-12 00:26:46 UTC

Linux Mint needed to be on this list - It really did.
If you're going to install Linux Mint without every changing a setting, along with ever updating, and everything on your hardware works, sure, it will run.
The problem with Mint is as soon as you start upgrading the distro, and start making changes (even GUI changes), the thing falls apart.
You've got a distro that is 3 development levels in. You start with Debian, which is forked to Ubuntu, which is forked into Mint. That is 2 developments before you in the upstream, and any issue in Debian or Ubuntu or combination of the two, plus Mint, it really does become a "hot mess" (junk).
Then you have the community who wants you to use the terminal for everything. There could be a user-friendly GUI Tool, and the community will instruct you to use the terminal method. - The post about changing the wallpaper was deleted, because it was absurd. But it was a great undertone of the problem with the community.
Mint Debian Edition, would be the distro to use, but they don't support it. All your updates come directly from Debian and if anything breaks that is exclusive to Mint, you're going to wait months, or even years, before they address it.
I'm not hatting on Ubuntu or Debian. You want a DEB distro, use Debian or Ubuntu. You'll get better stability, better support, and people who will remind you, there are GUI tools. Or better yet, go with Fedora, and you'll likely never need to touch the terminal (seriously).

Everyone is talking about PewDiePie using Linux.
What do you see?
You see another person talking about the terminal and all the crazy things you can do with the terminal. Which means he is not a newbie, and he is recommending Mint, whose support community, despite offering some user-friendly GUI tools, will insist you learn the terminal for everything.
Look at Microsoft Windows or Apple macOS. That is what people are looking for on Linux. Not to geek out, or deep dive into a command prompt, but the simple point and click, ease of use. So to sum up, they want to use their computer, not work on their computer.
Your PC should be so easy to use, that the kid back in grade school, who made all those questionable choices, who likely ate paste, could understand how to use their computer. Because that is what most end-users, want - something they can use with as little thought and effort as humanely possible.
Good news, it is 2025, Linux can be that easy!
I worked in Consumer IT. That means, I dealt with people who struggled to find their desktop. My "favorite" question from people who did not know tech was instructing them to find something on their desktop, and them asking, where do I find the desktop - Not joking.
YES, those people can use Linux too. But it is not Linux Mint. I know this, because if the consumer wanted to try Linux, it was our job, to help them use Linux. Those who tried Mint, left Linux and jumped right back to Windows or Apple, in record time.
Install Fedora KDE Plasma, set up automatic updates, and you'd done. That's it. Everything is going to work and keep on working, 98% of the time. Fedora is the semi-rolling release to CentOS, which moves to Red Hat Enterprise Linux. It is going to have fanatic hardware support and offer outstanding stability. If you're OK not having the latest software, and want just a little more stability, use CentOS.
Discover (Flatpak) is your app store. Point and click installs. No thinking, no configuration, just ease of use. It will also let you know when your operating system (Fedora / CentOS) needs updating, and you click on update, just like you would in Windows Update or Apple Update. No terminal, no thinking, it just does the job for you.
KDE Plasma, all your setting in 1 place. Point in click. Even easier than Microsoft Control Panel. Try it. Even the Start Menu (app menu) looks like Windows (see screenshot). They even organize it for you. For example, your web browser will be in your Internet category.
Perhaps you want to configure files and change advance settings. You can still do that in Fedora, but still, let's make it easier even for you, who want to tweak configurations and use the terminal, and use NixOS.
See screenshot, that is NixOS running KDE Plasma. 1 master file runs everything. You still have all your basic settings, point and click, ease. But if you want to learn more, you don't have to go finding things or trying to remember where something is, just 1 file to rule them all (Yes, it’s like the Lord of the Rings).
Linux can be so much easier, no matter if you're an absolute newbie, who knows nothing. Or you want to learn, and get your hands dirty. We've got something for everyone, and it does not need to be so damn hard on you.

KDE Plasma looks near identical to a Windows desktop, including a start menu. Linux has come a long way from the days when you needed to be a tech geek to use it. So many people fear using Linux, because historically, using Linux used to be hard. Today, it is point and click, easy.

Accept that Linux is your only path to safety, security, and privacy.
Microsoft is counting on the average user to not care if they are watched and spied on. They are exploiting their market size and assume, you will just learn to live with it, and I fear for many, they are right. Because you can complain until you are blue in the face, they are going to do this anyway. It is comparable to stick with an abusive partner, they have no reason to change, because you are not going to leave them, and until you do, nothing changes.

If Donald Trump's regime started calling and texting people asking, "are you, by chance, brown or tan skin" regarding the job you applied to or worked at, would you really think they had your best interest in mind?
Because if you would, you have no common sense and no survival instinct at all.
At the moment, they're calling up and texting people, asking if they are Jewish, and if they have friends or family, who may be Jewish. This should scare you -truly, it should.

Internally, not released to the public, there is a Meta (Facebook) Web Browser, and it is based on Chromium. I can absolutely see Mark Zuckerberg wanting to make that official for public release.
Having said that, while I agree with the government, that Google needs to be broken up. My issue is anyone who has the capital to buy portions of Google, including Chrome, would not be good for the consumer. Some of these assets just simply would cost too much, since they are worth a lot. If the government wanted to see portions of Google to end up with non-profits, for example, they should have broken up Google years ago.

Linux Developments absolutely suck, and have always sucked, at naming things, including the terminology, that has carried over for decades.
They're good at coding, very bad at marketing. - In fact, absolutely horrible at marketing.

Every once in a while, I encounter a Windows user, who is learning about Linux. And they hear the term "non-free" and think something cost money.
1st time Linux users, this does not mean they cost anything. Non-free or un-free is a generic term used to describe packages that may not be 100% open source or are open source, but have restricted licenses or whose developments for whatever reason could not be included in the ISO by default and were OPT-IN. Your media codecs are a good example of something that is non-free / unfree.

I had the same thing happen on eBay, but it is Amazon. Far too many drop-shipping happening on eBay these days.
During the pandemic, I took a liking to "Bubly sparkling water" (actual spelling). For whatever reason, Amazon would not ship some flavors to my address (just my town, for unknown reasons). I tried overcoming that by buying through eBay and learned just how many people actually drop-ship through Amazon. I had to go through so many sellers to finally try all the flavors.

We experienced our 1st pirate with Amazon, but ours had a twist. It was the Amazon delivery driver.
I think they expected no one to be home, so they leaned up the box already open, against the railings on the stairs, so it looked like it was all closed up. Amazon gave me such a hard time with that refund. The driver turned white, when they heard me from behind them. lol - Still troubling getting that refund.

Walmart is annoying, because it will read "Walmart" as the seller, but after I place it in my cart, somehow it ends up being a 3rd party. Walmart will resign you if they cannot fulfil the order or if they believe it will take longer.

On Temu, of course, there is still the risk of getting something that is crap, but they seem to handle quality control better than their competition (AliExpress, for example). A bad seller does not seem to easier re-register under a new name, and if you do end up with a bad item (or missing), they not only refund you, but also give you a bonus credit for your time. Heck, I get a credit if my item is late with Temu.
Amazon, on the other hand, may argue I did not buy directly from Amazon, and Walmart may pass me off to a 3rd party seller without my consent, just to fill the order.

Temu HDMI Cable = 4 bucks
HDMI Cable anywhere else = 15 bucks or more
Temu HDMI divider or hub = 8 bucks
HDMI divider or hub anywhere else = 25 bucks or more
Temu CAT7 Ethernet wire = 4 bucks
CAT7 Ethernet wire anywhere else = 15 bucks or more
I have actually cut open the cables and compared, they are identical. That is what I use Temu for, cables. The only thing I could not find is a decant DisplayPort / HDMI adaptor. The ones on Temu are usually only one way directional (I want it both ways, or if I had to settle DisplayPort for my graphics card and HDMI for the monitor).
It is going to be sad, that Temu may soon cost the same as everywhere else.

There are times, when I don't understand people. - At all.
There were people who were trash talking Ultramarine Linux, trolling the development, and here I was trying to be a supporter. "Random" could bitch, complain, and moan, but if I asked, "hey guys, what's up" I got the "give it a rest" attitude.
You look at the Fediverse, and until recently, I spoke more about Ultramarine Linux, than the development did. I was very positive, claiming how great the operating system was for newbies. My post history, alone, should speak for itself.
Sometimes, good intentions, good deeds, don't yield good results. This is one of those times, and I am disappointed in Ultramarine Linux.

I kept wanting to help test whatever they wanted to be tested or fund, whatever they wanted to be funded - That is my strong suite. They went out of their way to thank everyone (naming people) who helped, including the people who donated as little as 5 bucks a month. I spent over 200 buck registering and securing Ultramarine and Frya Labs, Domain Names, and was not mention, once.

Microwave lasted almost 17 years.
Suddenly makes a loud buzz sound when NOT running, and gets hot. Last thing I did was boil water, and after it dinged, it kept making noise as if it were still running. Unplugged the microwave, let it cool for a few hours, plugged it back in, and still was making the buzz sound (bit of a vibration too), and gets warm on the outside.
I assume it's dangerous, so it's being decommissioned.

That, I am not certain. I do not think they can enforce tariffs on digital content. So there is a possibility that some businesses may or may not ignore the tariffs on digital content. We will have to wait and see.

I joke, but I never understood the whole disposable phone market. I do not need, nor want, to go wasting money on a new phone every year or so. Some of these phones today, cost nearly 1,000 bucks, and the idea of rushing to buy another one, when the current one works just fine, does not interest me.
I have seen the specs of many of these new phones, too. There is often not much of a significant different between versions. If you truly want the latest, greatest, right away, I guess that is your thing. But even if I were as wealthy as Elon Musk, I wouldn't go rushing to buy a new phone every year.

Vivaldi Browser is now bundled with Proton VPN. But Proton (the company) is a registered business in the United States.
There are 200 or so independent countries, territories, and states world-wide. But as you know, corporations do not include terms and conditions for all 200 or so geographical jurisdictions. Businesses only include and worry about the jurisdictions that apply to them.
That said, I would much rather let their own legal documentation speak for itself. Here are their terms concerning Proton. It has whole sections concerning US Customers and US Laws. https://proton.me/wallet/terms A company outside Us Law would not care about American laws, anymore than you would likely care about the law in North Korea, for example.
Proton would like to argue, likely from a public relations standing point, that these terms only apply to Proton Wallet. But that is not how our laws work in the United States. You do not get to pick and choose which department is subject to US Law, anymore than you get to pick which Us Laws you want to follow.
I am really disappointed that Vivaldi Browser, would bundle a company, is clearly subject to Us Laws and Us Jurisdiction.
