I've lived in worse places. With the climate changing, I don't want to be far from a western coastline.
These condos are currently selling at or just under $300K. The highest was about $305K, and the lowest was $150K, in the past 8+ years. I think the most recent was closer to $275K, because it was a reverse mortgage where the owner died, it got passed between banks, and HUD wound up selling it for what they could get. Same with the $150K one, which was stripped of appliances, and had other problems.

For real. No part of the west coast is as affordable as it once was.
There are tech and logistics companies popping up around here. I have no idea what they pay. The region is changing from forestry and fisheries into tech and entertainment. Also wineries. The people behind the Staples Center are here to build another arena. The Trail Blazers got sold, so they get another arena (or else). There are jobs, but they might get filled by advertising locally.
Still, Portland is not a completely 24-hour city like Los Angeles (but waaaaaay better than San Jose), although it's getting there. I don't mind living nearby.

There are great places all over the PNW. I couldn't afford Portland, which is still absurdly expensive, even with plenty of old houses from the turn of the last century. I'm tempted to move at times, but here I am. If you do this, get a local realtor to help you, even if you plan to rent. The land up here is varied, and some is pretty, but not very safe.

😬 You make a very good point. I loved LA, but not its heatwaves. Portland is cooler, and a bit less expensive overall, so I'm starting to get attached to this place. Less random gunfire, too. I'm in a suburb.
The climate is also changing here. I went to an auto parts store 3-4 years ago (not there anymore) to get chains. The clerks talked about how they hadn't had a good snowy winter since the 70's, except for a bit here and there, so I might not need them. Definitely not 4. Ooookay.
It's starting to remind me of northern California, especially the northern Bay Area. But we have the wrong trees for the climate change, so we'll get fires. 😔
If you think you will someday move north, it might be best to do it sooner rather than later. I suspect many people will get the same urge.

If you want real estate, the Prospect Hotel at Crater Lake in Oregon for $1.7 million, restored to historical society standards, with 10 bed and breakfast rooms and a 14 room hotel, would seem like a very good buy at first blush. I don't know how the business side of it might do, and there is a fire risk, but if you like throwing caution to the wind, the owners want to sell it.

For all we know, a complex simulation half a billion years into the future can be generated by properly interacting a myriad of fields, perhaps driven by a computational element, but not directly being one. For all we know, we're tiny like "a galaxy on Orion's belt." I very much dislike seeing some witty remark and a Bluesky link. First off, I don't know what it's about. Second, sometimes when I arrive at the link, I must have a Bluesky account to read it. Once, the post contained a link which, you guessed it, I had to have a Bluesky account to access.
I think the clumsiness of the interface is deliberate. I would reject this crap, were I CTO. The end result is an attempt to draw Fediverse users into Bluesky to read their content.

I removed my last 2 videos from YouTube and am hosting a PeerTube site because of this. They butchered them. One had details smeared, and colors changed in waves of awful. One had lyrics embedded in the video - at one point it jumps forward in the video, so the audio is out of sync. I'm going to pull all of them. They cannot be trusted with our content any more. They did this without permission. They know where they can go.

Okay, so assuming it's so, what's to prevent one from generating life in a galaxy? If they are the ultimate data storage and retrieval devices, which makes sense, why wouldn't they be manifesting something tangible with all of that data and retrieval capacity?
I think the comment about the optimal size of a black hole to an alien civilization exploiting them misses the possibility that the civilization is external to our universe, and that our universe, quite large and vast to us pipsqueaks, might be the size of a marble to them.

If it makes you feel better, back in ancient times, a prof I took a math class from in graduate school was taunted by students from a different school who needed his class as a prerequisite. They mocked his name. He was not one to be mocked.
One day, when those students skipped class, he handed out a special paper and instructed the in-class students that if they told anyone about it, he would haunt them in the afterlife.
When the final exam came around, he announced that whatever grade you got on the final would heavily impact your final grade.
One of the five questions was about that paper.
People don't usually get grades that low. There was an A+. Then there was a B- (me, who also missed that class). Then it got ugly.

I heard that the "deal" includes a Trump Tower in Moscow. If that's the case, this is the culmination of decades of "dealing" between the Russians and the gangster king. The gas, whatever it is, may hug closer to the ground when cold, and so has more molecules available to smell. Or the current day-night temperatures may suggest the temperature at which it evaporates.
It could be decaying organics. I've smelled some nasty fermentation. If it's fruit, there might be flies at some point. On the plus side, that will help narrow down the location.
I was pondering if it was a petroleum seep, but I'd think that would cause odor outdoors, too. I smelled one once when driving on a section of Coldwater Canyon in the valley.

Some beds have more sensors than others. If these have temperature sensors to keep sides at preferred temps, and motion sensors to know you've rolled onto your side or onto your back, the amount of information available to these guys increases. If it's combined with other GPS data from phone and/or vehicle, they could pinpoint when people were having sex, where, and with whom. Could also possibly infer how enjoyable the experience was.
With that amount of data, one could use a game engine to simulate in 3D what was happening.
This is incredibly invasive, and opens customers up to possible extortion or blackmail.
It would also be terribly bad for some folks if their insanely jealous and/or homicidal spouse hacks the bed.
