For all we know, a complex simulation half a billion years into the future can be generated by properly interacting a myriad of fields, perhaps driven by a computational element, but not directly being one. For all we know, we're tiny like "a galaxy on Orion's belt." There are all sorts of possibilities which do not resemble a slab of etched silicon where we stopped because a handful of CEOs wanted to cash out before the most valuable cards were even on the table.
