Okay, so assuming it's so, what's to prevent one from generating life in a galaxy? If they are the ultimate data storage and retrieval devices, which makes sense, why wouldn't they be manifesting something tangible with all of that data and retrieval capacity?
I think the comment about the optimal size of a black hole to an alien civilization exploiting them misses the possibility that the civilization is external to our universe, and that our universe, quite large and vast to us pipsqueaks, might be the size of a marble to them.
Or inside of a computing system.
Maybe one employing black holes.
If I made such a universe, I'd be sure to instrument it, to prove to my colleagues that it, indeed, generated life. And I'd want to visit. So would all of my colleagues. Were we capitalists, we'd charge for it. And now you understand the meaning of life.
Or, with all of that data storage and retrieval, perhaps our universe is a computer system answering questions. In which case, it's likely the homework project of a proud alien teenager who is really into death metal and fascism, asking the question, "Is it really possible to, like, get rich when you rock on, Hitler dudes and dudettes? This time, use the letter X a lot! Yo, this is gonna be funny, yo! Maybe blast a car into space, yo! Lolol!"
