Time for another hiking and native plant thread: this time another excursion to Mt Baker/Komo Kulshan, in Washington's North Cascades, just south of the Canadian border. I did this trip last year but came back to explore more. Here's the bridge just after the trailhead, and the old growth hemlock forest that leads away up the mountain. It's hard to capture in photos how huge these trees are-- close to 200 ft (60 meters). THREAD

Ptarmigan ridge is fantastic. One of my all time favorite hikes. Heliotrope lets you get a little closer to the glacier and get a better look at it but Ptarmigan has those awesome views of Shuksan and the mountains to the East.

Hiking Heliotrope ridge part 4. Some corn lilies with their seed heads. A cow parsnip, Haracleum maximum, a pretty common plant in the Cascades.

Hiking Heliotrope ridge part 3. Mt.Baker is an active(ish) volcano that last noticeably erupted in the 1850s. It's covered with a number of glaciers, and some descend far enough to be reachable on foot without ropes or technical skill. In summer they melt in torrents of water that just gush off the mountain. I had to ford this one, it's about knee deep but swift enough to sweep a person off their feet if you're not careful.
