Probably a Thompson Contender, I think it's the standard for break action pistols in insane calibers (up to .45-70 Government :cirnoForReals: per Wikipedia).
Here F for a loose type of F = 1/2 mv^2, and the velocity is doing the heavy lifting.
Rifle cartridge designed for a twenty inch barrel, chop off so much of that and plenty of very very fast although not entirely burned gas/smokeless powder will contribute, especially if the barrel is not ported (at the cost of more muzzle blast, gas can be sent generally upwards prior to end of the barrel). And the bullet is going to get pretty fast even if not reaching normal rifle or carbine speeds. Also no semi-action to spread out the recoil over time a bit.
Whereas the handgun cartridges you're comparing it to normally have heavy slugs which are probably moving slower, and faster burning powder to make the most use of the shorter barrels they're normally in.

Here’s what’s always buried in these stories [of parents resisting Chromebooks etc.]. Teachers need the devices. Not the kids.
A typical public school classroom has gotten impossible to manage. They don’t hold kids back anymore. They don’t expel. They don’t really discipline at all.
So now you have classrooms full of violent, anti-social, distracting behaviors with some kids who can’t recognize their own names and some kids who can read Crime and Punishment.
The variance in the classroom is so high that teachers need the devices to just be able to breathe.
They can’t lesson plan for some kids who need Kindergarten materials and some kids who need 8th grade and everyone in between. Put them on the device.
They can’t manage the behaviors that are disrupting the classroom. Put them on a device.
The device is the band aid to the systemic problems of the education system that no one wants to address. It is very much a screen time nanny for the kids who diverge from the rest of the class.
The problem is… everyone has a device and it’s not fair to let the “bad” kids be the only ones who get screentime. Feels like a reward. So teachers cave and let everyone on, which exacerbates all the root causes and makes everything worse.
All that to say, removing screens won’t do much of anything unless you start bringing back common sense of the 90s and 00s. If you fail, you’re held back. If you’re a jerk, you’re removed.
When the classroom is relatively homogenous, there is no need for devices.

Paying attention to the _SCIENCE!!!_ is useful (there's no threat as of yet and little potential. see last link), but this is interesting as an example of desperation as Trump and non-GOPe types implement something of an Anaconda Plan against the Democrats. See ending USAID for and early part of that.

Something interesting in a general DoW press release on X:

Not sure about the porn claim, the big thing was whatever the video and original audio quality (and stereo creating editing issues), the size of the cassette and thus length of tape fit what people wanted to do with it, like time shifting, and renting and eventually sell-through buying of media. Also was an open enough standard, vs. Betamax being Sony only.
So it was a standard that was "good enough" while being vastly superior in two critical areas (and did S-VHS close the quality gap?). TL;DR: Sony generally sucks at standards.

But at the level of writing C programs for example? This was a microarchitectural detail that did make a big difference in IA32 performance. See also the FSB memory bottleneck vs. ccNUMA HyperTransport.

It's remarkably difficult to find a _primary_ source on the Curiosity rover's CPUs, and you also have to check the higher level Mars Science Lab name for the project.
BAE Systems who makes the RAD 750 hardened POWER CPU says it's going to be used, but I couldn't find anything that said what was actually used. Everything else I could find was secondary....

Before the age of Starlink size satellite fleets (which are below the van Allen belts anyway), radiation hardened CPUs fell into the last of these four categories:
* Zero cost like microcontrollers
* Zero time to perform tasks
* Zero power like mobile and IoT today
* Zero units including military stuff
As long as the max power draw isn't really high, and waste heat is generally useful for outer system stuff, I don't see any reason not to make such CPUs generally capable. Closer to the zero time set, while of course they're zero units, I remember a typical prices of $100K each which is cheap for their types of missions.

That's a nice theory, but the harsh fact is that jail and prison space is _severely_ limited. Including my deep Red state part of flyover country. Politicians have decided there are better ways to buy votes.
So even if they're not soft on crime, or ethnocentric, judges can only _try_ to triage the perps who come before them, and they _will_ make mistakes. Which assumes if they had perfect foreknowledge there would even be enough space for the worst of the worst, which is probably not true in general.
Compare to a bartender kicking out a patron who just goes to another bar, albeit the second bartender probably has better clues.

Epstein is generally known from all these emails to be pig ignorant about most everything. For example, he'd read financial stuff in the popular press, stuff he's supposed to know about, then forward it to his financial guys.
Here the green text guy is about the same, doesn't know for example that SSRIs are a now ancient class of drugs, the first coming to the US market exactly thirty years ago. As in, basic, take a pill every day SSRIs are all generics as far as I know and just now can tell with some Brave AI checking (various new wrinkles are covered, like a very very extended release once weekly (!!!) Prozac pill).

We got his cellphone video last of the big video releases, it and another from a security cam in a building in front of all this shows he was to the right of the vehicle, which was then roughly perpendicular to the street and thus not good for trying to get away.
Then she rather quickly repositioned her SUV to the right so he ended up _right_ in front of her. When she had plenty of room to move even more to the right to clear him and start to get away.
Then we know from other videos she gunned the engine and everything went down _very fast_ as you can see in his cellphone video and hear his "Whoa!"

From the replies I got to this post, some of y'all need a tutorial in the diagnosis and management of blunt trauma injuries. While I'm not a doctor, this is something I know a bit about from both book study and some grim personal experience.
So. Jonathan Ross got hit by a 2-ton SUV traveling at low speed. We know it was low speed, because if it weren't, he would be dead and we wouldn't be having this conversation.
The effect of that kind of collision is a lot like being whanged by an oversized baseball bat. This is not trivial shit, not just "bruising"....
[In detail, elsewhere he explains this is from the force being transmitted by muscles into the internal viscera.]
Yes, you can be ambulatory after that, and he was, but this is a category of injury that can and not infrequently does kill you later even if adrenaline powers you through the prompt effects.
The problem is that the damage from internal bleeding is cumulative, subtle, and hard to diagnose from the outside unless you get really obvious symptoms like blood in your stool. I nearly died from this once myself, which is how I know about this.
So he went straight to the emergency room. Standard protocol is to put him under close observation and do some diagnostic imaging. If he's bleeding badly enough to have trouble standing, it's surgery time - you need to go in, find the bleeders and repair them.
Fortunately Ross wasn't injured that badly. But don't make any mistake about this, anytime you have viscera injury you were only a few pounds of applied force from death. It's plain blind luck that [driver] Good didn't kill him.
You don't want to surgically intervene if you don't have to, because the trauma from the surgery can be as bad or worse than the injury. So you keep him under observation for a while and then you send him home with instructions to self-monitor for indications that the internal bleeding has become serious. Indications: blood in the stool, bloating, persistent abdominal pain.
If he survives 48 hours without increased symptoms, he'll probably be okay and no further treatment required. I think this period is already past us. But believe me, he's going to be under instructions to take it easy and not stress the bleeders for at least a week.

Yes and no.
I'm not aware of any vaguely recent incidents where whites attacked in their homes who engaged in legit self-defense against negroes were charged.
The item implies the incident went beyond that to finishing the attackers off, which is illegal and a very bad idea outside of Texas, where there's a unique for states grand jury system that just might choose to no bill you, like happened with that restaurant incident.
The bad or suboptimal outcomes for whites I'm familiar with involve one or more of:
* Moving or shooting outside your castle and the situation not calling for lethal force.
* Luring people into your castle.
* Often connected with the above, continuing to shoot after a perp is down and disabled.
Things change outside of your castle; today you can assume including in Red states like Georgia that any _offensive_ actions against negroes will get you into trouble.
You have to limit yourself to pure self-defense of yourself and "your's," you can't for example use any level of force to deal with a negro who's attacking others.
And of course the usual suspects may put you into legal jeopardy anyway. So get real legal protection like from CCW Safe, which not long after getting established retained the lead lawyer in the Zimmerman-Martin case.

Look _really_ closely at the rifle especially near the end of the clip as it's being carried and you can see the underside. The scale is a bit off for a high power centerfire one, it looks to me like a barrel cocking air rifle. That especially based on my interpretation of the forward end of the stock, you cock the spring by pulling the barrel down thus what looks more like a mechanism than the smooth wood you'd expect there.

Oh, I forgot to mention something as crazy in it's own way. About the most insane procurement of the military as of late is the M7 rifle and M250 light machine gun which (((Sig Sauer, Inc.))) convinced the Army to adopt under "Biden."
Finally uses a wider bullet ammo after our long, international nightmare of 5.56 mm FMJ ... but it's not just 7.56 NATO necked down to 6.8 mm (.270/.277, which in the AR-15 envelope was found to be a very good if not best compromise between long range and impact/stopping power)....
No, it's ostensible reason for existence is to defeat modern body armor, _and_ using a 13 inch barrel plus suppressor mess that ups the dry weight to ten pounds!
To achieve a 3,002 fps muzzle velocity, the cartridge is driven to 80,000 psi!!! You can't do this with just brass, so it's a Frankenstein stainless "steel case-head and brass body connected by an aluminum locking washer" which is inherently much more expensive.

You joke, I think, but Sig Sauer, Inc. in the US has one Ron Cohen as its CEO, under whom its quality has taken a nose dive from everything I've heard, and who plead guilty to gun trafficking.
Yeah, you can't make this up, including his convincing the US military to ditch its Berettas for a much modified SIG 320 model. This very month an airman died from one of these pistols, and the New, Improved Strategic Air Command, the Air Force Global Strike Command, stopped using them.

Corning sold off their kitchenware division, and the company that bought the US portion was believed to have stopped following the recipe including tempering that made their flint glass-ware safe (enough) in stoves etc.
_Lots_ of reports of glass flying around disasters, although not much hard data or real and/or Official data and explanations. And the old stuff is selling well on eBay, I bought some myself.

There's a good chance the regime will fall (or perhaps it could just go full lethal against protests if/when they happen ... but a failure to do that was the spark that ended the Shah's regime).
Unless Iran already made some nukes and has managed to keep them from being destroyed, they aren't going to get any in the foreseeable future even if that one facility doesn't get a B-2 MOP dropping visit.

Disagree in part: immediate granting of _ex parte_ TROs which technically can't be appealed is very much a trope of our current regime of Inferior Court Supremacy.
Also beware of an instant appeal to the Ninth ~~Circus~~ Circuit. The ACLU did that in an illegals case after giving the Texas district judge 42 minutes to rule (and got swatted down, then the Supreme Court both granted it and chastised the inferior judges; look for Judge Ho's "not a Denny's" scathing towards the Supreme Court order for lots more).
One thing any legal mind with a clue will be thinking about is that Trump can instantly trump this legal action with the Insurrection Act. As far as I know she/we never screwed up before I left for college (that is, _everyone_ in the household getting quickly sick at the same time, GI infections that went through the family had a timing that indicated serial passage from one member to others, like of norovirus or the like). And she passed that knowledge and habits on to my siblings and myself.
They grew grain, but of course raised chickens for the usual purposes plus providing a good meal for hired for harvest farm hands, it would have been ... impolite to sicken them on.

Maybe, it's certainly leaning that way, But this question shows why we have a republic, because the people are sometimes fucking dumb.
"Never do an enemy a small injury" as Machiavelli said, our "bombing Israel" would get a lethal response, _and create more diaspora Jews,_ the last thing we need (even if this would likely massively decrease the number in the US).
If Iran isn't stopped from getting the bomb, nothing good will happen, including see again the above, more diaspora Jews, in this case a lot more in the US.

* LD50 ~450 REMs: The cells that make blood cells in your bones; this can be treated,
* ~600 REMs (from memory): The fast replacing cells that line your small intestines (it's a brutal environment), no treatment, but no "body liquefies" as far as I know, except maybe inside your abdomen??? Not sure there's a period where you start feeling better....
* ~1000 or more REMs (not a lot of data): Central nervous system, and incapacitation is near immediate and death is pretty quick (principle of enhanced radiation warheads (which we never even built for land warfare).
Child of the Cold War here, although this data is mostly from nuclear weapons production accidents, see also Japan proving before the tsunami its culture is incompatible with doing this stuff safely....

Even APC business grade UPSes have declined.
They got bought out by Schneider Electric in 2007 and now they don't care about build quality. For example I've seen reviews of their new LiFePO rackmount line where people complain the front panel screws, holes in panel and/or device are messed up..... Someone also did a tear down of I forget which model, perhaps higher end, and the workmanship in the transformer connections was _awful_.
Bought a new 750VA Smart-UPS almost two years ago after my previous had used up two (lead acid) batteries (which is when you start to doubt the further longevity of the rest of it) and now one extra feature or warranty thing?? is cloud based.... :saddest:
The battery or some settings/behavior managing it are wonky, after the _slightest_ hit it starts a minutes long battery charging cycle reported per the USB connection.
That said, the above annoyances aside, it actually works without flaw, including the battery recovering from at least one recent long-ish outage that discharged it a fair amount. And none going back to before their century have ever set my house on fire, which is my biggest concern with UPSs, especially consumer grade which also don't deliver sine wave power.

Probably so due to the somewhat limited domain it targets and the fact smart people tend to be the ones who use it?
(Limited especially by reality compared to, for example, payroll, which tends to be horribly complicated especially for big companies that embed their time off, sick days etc. policies in it.)

Unfair to cite the 1950s and the _very_ first computer languages, we just didn't have enough experience in this whole thing. See the British guy who walking away from his (very rare I think) computer came to the sudden realization he would be spending a great deal of the rest of his life fixing code bugs, including his own.
More fruitful would be for example the CASE era, per Wikipedia and my vague memory "CASE tools were at their peak in the early 1990s. According to the PC Magazine of January 1990, over 100 companies were offering nearly 200 different CASE tools." (The real action where I was in those days was with PCs that had become seriously capable with 386 and 486 CPUs and Windows 3.0 and beyond.)
