I don’t think that’s the point. If you aren’t a citizen you should have to show your legal residency status. With all of the KYC requirements to open a bank account in the US, I’m shocked this isn’t already happening.

I don’t blame him for getting a benefactor for his nostr work, but I get the sense he’d be doing that even without the backing. It’s as much about his excitement for the project with him. I also guess he hasn’t pissed off most of the nostr world like he did on the Fedi world. :)

I think so. Alex is all aboard the nostr train these days. Sad as I still run it on my instance. Not sure how easy it would be to move to another project without losing everything. Maybe Pleroma since the backend codebases are similar?
Too bad because I really like the front soapbox front end. It seems to be working well so far.

TV? Who said you need that? Do you have a screen? That’s all you need. What’s a TV these days anyway? It just a screen with HDMI ports...Nothing special. But you don’t even need a monitor.
The antenna runs into a box that streams to any device on your network. There are a ton of them out there. Some can even use your plex server to control it or the box will have an app to do it.
I’m using HDHomeRun but there are lots of them out there. If done correctly it should cost 3-figures. Cheap compared to most services in terms of payback.
It won’t get you everything. But the big ones tend to be there. But even if you only use it a couple times a year, it still works.
The alternative is to buy one month of, say, Sling then cancel. Grab a new email address to get the ”new customer“ discount. I’ve done this as well for stuff like ESPN when my hockey team made it past the first round of the playoffs.

This is where OTAs are good. Set up once, no monthly fees so even if you only use it a few times a year it’s ok.
And the AFC game kind of sucked, IMO. Neither team played well and the weather was …Colorado in January. One of those games where it’s tough to see the field.
But as one who doesn’t pay for cable/satellite TV services…the one time 3-figure cost of an OTA setup is worth it.

An interesting theory, but Pokemon cards are, essentially, a collectible. That market is very tough because the majority of the items end up worthless. I remember TV ad (back when I watched regular TV) for all sorts of things that were supposed to be valuable some day…civil war plate sets, silly physical coins, beanie babies. Guess how much they are all worth 30 years later? Essentially nothing, certainly not what the people paid for them. Can you strike it rich in collectibles? Sure. But it’s a bit of a crap shoot as to what people will want a few decades from now.

There isn't much money to be made mining BTC now...the cost of doing so puts most people out of the game. Mining was never intended to be the source of value for BTC, it was just an incentive to get people to mine them. 10 years ago, you could have done very well. Now? Not really.
The whole point of limiting the supply was that the real value would occur *after* you couldn't make anymore due to scarcity. Between that and the amount of coins essentially burned due to things like lost keys would keep the supply low.

And how well has everyone using the same money worked out so far. It's great in theory, but doesn't really work in the real world.
How many people in the world even know that there are forks of BTC? I'd bet less than 1%. Good luck getting them to standardize on it.
It's your money, throw it where you like. But betting the farm on any crypto, yet alone an alt coin is quite a spec bet.
My point behind it being the problem is that there isn't anything that BCH can do that any other crypto can't do. The barrier to entry on making new cryptos is way to low therefore, it's going to be tough to sell people on the value of any given one. If anyone can make one, it's not that valuable.

One needs to pick an argument. You can’t say it’s valuable because it’s limited in supply then in the next breath say once the supply is depleted another coin will be more valuable.
It you see crypto as a currency, then its value is what you can trade that currency for and how easy that is. In that race USD blows BTC away. USD has more transactions for things that are not USD in a day than BTC has in a year
As a spec trade I get it. But it’s not a real currency.

Exactly no one actually did. People bought btc because number go up. To the extent that there is utility in BTC (or any crypto for that matter) that utility isn’t worth much monetarily.
The problem is that these projects have a super low barrier to entry so even if one finds a good utility use case, there’s an infinite number of identical (or nearly identical) projects that can spawn quickly to do the same thing. No matter how high demand gets, supply can match or exceed it.
But BTC isn’t infinite. While true it can be infinitely forked. An infinite number of finite sets is still, from an economic point of view, infinite.
I got into this thread more just to put in my thoughts on trading anything, not to endorse or discourage what one is trading.

Linux has come a long way. I made the jump several years ago. The biggest hurdle these days is application replacement but today as most people do just about everything in a browser that’s easier than it used to be. I was able to replace everything except one application I use for trading so I run a Win11 VM inside of Linux just for that...that’s literally all I run there so the exposure is quite limited. Everything else is outside of Windows.
iIt’s doable…it just takes planning. Think of it as a fun project. :)

There certainly are cloud competitors to AWS. How easy it would be to use them would depend on what services Signal uses in AWS. Some will have equivalents, some may not. AWS, being around for so long has a boatload of services and it’s not in their best interest to make them easily movable.
But I absolutely get why something like Signal would use a cloud provider. Could it be done entirely on-prem? Quite probably. However could they do it within a business model that would allow the scale of users to use it as they have today without charging significant fees to use it? I highly doubt it. This would hold true for anyone wanting to build a service like theirs that would operate on the their scale. The bandwidth and other infrastructure would be immense and super expensive to buy and maintain. The only folks able to provide that would be big telco, tech companies.
Could it be all decentralized ala the Fediverse? Sure and such services exist. But, much like the Fediverse, getting user adoption would be much more difficult and tour audience would be those tech savvy enough to use what’s already out there. I mean, for example, Matrix/Element exists. Quite secure, very decentralized. But it’s not for the general public.

Some people just crave attention. But I think you’ll find that a lot of the thumbnails are just AI generated and sometimes even the content will be as well with just still pictures and a voiceover. They got your click.

The combined net worth of all billionaires in the US is around $6T. That would only fund the federal government (not state and locals, just the federal government) for about 18 months. And you could only tax that once. And that’s just current spending, it doesn’t address the $37T debt.
It’s not a matter of revenue.

The bar has been set at zero cost to the end user. Social media, email, news. That’s the going rate. Will there be people willing to pay for these things? Yes. But that group is tiny. It’s just not a priority for most people. This is especially true in rougher economies when money is tight. And that brings me back to the “democratized attention“ point you made earlier. In theory you are correct. In practice, AP is used mostly by people who have some combination of tech skills and disposable time and money. That’s the difference between theory and reality.

Maybe I don’t know exactly what you mean by “civics” in this case. But I don’t see civic engagement as a reason most people use social media. Some do, but that’s not the bulk of the users. In fact, it drives more people off than attracts.
Your vision requires one of two things that most social media users don’t want.
1. Work. They have to set up and maintain their own instances. That’s a non-starter for 99% of social media users.
2. They would need to pay to use an instance. After decades of getting it at no financial cost, a pay system is not likely to catch on.
That leaves ads, which is the current system. And under that system big tech wins every time.

It’s not a matter of what I want. This is just reality. Most people don’t care about “democratized attention”. Hell, most people couldn’t tell you what that even means.
Most people just want a place to be entertained and be able to keep up with long distant family and friends. There are those who are there for attention and the narcissistic supply. None of those groups will get what they are looking for here. That’s not the culture here nor is it how it’s designed. This is a niche product. I’m glad it exists and it serves my interests. But my interests, motivations, and priorities are not that of most people.
Look at all the uproar over the potential banning of TikTok in the US. If AP were to vanish tomorrow, would the average internet user even notice? Of course not.

Child support need not be outlawed. But a man should have the legal right to not pay child support in exchange for giving up all parental rights. If he wants to keep those rights, then he should be expected to pay to support that child. In addition, the woman should be expected to be able to document that the money is actually being spent to take care of the child.
If you want to full authority, you must be willing to accept full responsibility. You can’t oblige someone else to pay for your decision.

Right. AOL threw their users onto the Internet with basically no warnings or instructions. These poor souls thought it was all AOL and would post really dumb stuff. And the Internet at the time was mostly University folks so you could guess how well that went. It was basically a giant episode of The Beverly Hillbillies. At that point even having an .aol.com address was seen as a sign of ignorance. It wasn’t entirely their fault, but it was messy.
That being said, ActivityPub is not going to be a big thing. It’s a niche product for a niche audience. I like it. But I just don’t see it becoming a big thing.

Lowering interest rates has a similar effect to printing money. Both increase demand which puts upward pressure on prices.
If you really want to bring down inflation, you have to crash the economy to kill demand and let supply catch up. You do that by keeping interest rates high.

Ala carte, pay per view. Same thing in this context. Look at the NFL. To see any game you want live you need at least 3 subscription services. This isn’t good long term. What they should offer is one price for a given team. Pay up and you’ll get all the games for the team you want to watch. $100 should work. Or get any single game for $15-20. But I shouldn’t have to subscribe to YouTubeTV + the NFL ticket + Amazon + Peacock + who knows what else.
This isn’t going to work. They will lose vi eventually.

Why was the UN required to reboot Israel? We had multi-lateral agreements before the UN existed. The Brits have plenty of experience releasing territory from the former empire all over the world.
It’s useless because it can’t enforce anything...and I’m not saying it should be able to do so. It’s just a way for rich countries to launder money through poor countries to enrich a few folks under the guise of giving “legitimacy” to the desires of the countries with power. But when they can’t bribe enough people to support a resolution, the powerful counties just do what they want anyway and veto any resolution condemning their actions.
