Wow that quote around dancing is a banger.
Also I just went down a rabbit hole of emma goldman quotes O_o
"""
It was a repetition of the dark Chicago days. Fourteen years, years
of painful growth, yet fascinating and fruitful years. And now the
end! The end? I was only thirty-two and there was yet so much, so
very much, undone. And the boy in Buffalo -- his life had scarce
begun. What was his life, I wondered; what the forces that drove
him to this doom ?"I did it for the working people," he was reported
to have said. The people! Sasha also had done something for the
people; and our brave Chicago martyrs, and the others in every land
and time. But the people are asleep; they remain indifferent. They
forge their own chains and do the bidding of their masters to crucify
their Christs.

Vermont is interesting (locally for me) in that we
seem very "blue" but we have a Rep. governor
that the neolibs seem to like generally.
Also rank and file liberals (in Vermont) like the
governor.
Lots of centrists here that don't know they
are centrists.
Vermont democrat politics (Bernie's origin story
is involved) is probably where I came to me
still strong belief that people are mistaken
when they assume that high level Dems/DNC
want to win. Like winning is pretty low
on their hierarchy of objectives.
(Yes it's on there, but so below some other
things that in effect it shouldn't even be
considered on there.)

How do you ask people to do something
that you really want them to do BUT you also
really ONLY want them to do it if they WANT to
do it and don't want them to do it from the pressure
of how much you want it?
These things are difficult for me, because neither
of the two like points of communication is more
important than the other.
Like my typical pattern is to over explain, but
it seems like you are rolling the dice and which
single point will get heard. Hmmm.
Maybe this is actually difficult because the REAL
point is a vanguard point of "the next two things
I express are going to be equally important to me".

Knowing that helps me stay quitted.
My "one trick" to quit smoking was that
I would only roll them myself, and i'd also

did was make me really expedient at rolling them :P

I switch back and forth between vi and emacs.
Vi is nice if you are into "Unix IS the IDE".
It starts instantly. You use the shell for shell
things.
Emacs is nice to do EVERYTHING in.
When I use emacs I leave it running for
days. It's especially nice for programming
any kind of lisp.
Emacs is definitely more of an ideal for using
as a pure programming editor, but i have
become more and more unix pilled so I
tend to use vi more lately.
An example is auto formatting. Emacs is great
at this IN the editor. Press tab and emacs will
do the correct thing indent wise.
In vi I have to find an external program
that formats (like gofmt or indent) and
pipe the buffer contents out to that
program and back. This is made easier
by using map commands to map keys
to do the indenting. But shows how emacs
and vi differ basically.

I have this urge to put up a palestinian flag
because I am so bothered by the US flags
and the isreali flag on the "liberal" part
of my street. Vermont has these older liberals
that are really conservative, but like the nicer
ones. (not a compliment)
I won't put up a flag for two reasons:
1. I recognize that I am being reactionary.
I don't believe in flags more than I want
to rebutt the neighbors flags.
IOW I would be doing the same thing they're
doing, and probably be counter-productive.
2. I live alone and don't have much of a community
so I am afraid of vandalism. I'm pretty sure the
local cops would see the palestinian flag
and just assume i was a terrorist.
I would like to think I was above this fear, but
i am not.

I blame smart phones.
And AI is just a sympton of what happens when
you willingly give over your cognitive agency

I guess at the minimun do not give your cognitive

Yes 100%.
I am probably a Luddite in the real meaning of that word also.
Like I don't fly in planes anymore. I also don't buy new computers.
I think that people expecting to have a computer in their pocket
at all times is totally wrong. (from that utility POV you mention)
But it's like being a vegan, I don't say it all the time in mixed company.
Like most of the people reading this are on a "pocket computer".
That is not the medium to tell them I don't think people
should have pocket computers. (again because of utility in
a difference sense ... i know the message will be counter
productive. Like vegans learn to not talk about veganism,
because it tends to make people dig into eating meat.)
I am prepared to not use computers anymore.
I am also someone that can use computers as
ethically as possible. (like by not buying new systems.)
(Also I am flawed and like i really want a MNT reform pocket
which would be a new systems. But even that is on the right
side of a lot of things because it is not a mult death corporation.)
I mean I did put my money where my mouth is.
I quit my high paying programming job at NTT because
i couldn't keep working with LLMs and agentic crap.
I will eventually run out of money and lose my house etc.
(I mean i will get a low paying job before that. I am
pretty good at working all kinds of jobs. I just really
like programming.)
About your last point. I think all of that is not real. You
could pay humans to do everything you said instead of
doing that. It would be better on all fronts.
Also like I was saying in another post, using LLMs in
that sense is usually "beauracry management".
Like filling out forms, and knowing which forms to
fill out. That whole systems needs to go away, and
catering to that by providing LLMs to underpriviledged
people is making my brain hurt. Also that is idealist
and in the short term if using an LLM helps an underpriviledged
person I would never tell _them_ to stop.
But in the big picture I won't pretend it's useful.
Utility starts with food water and shelter and well being
from having a good quality of life. Like it's good to remember
those first principles. LLMs as a solution to any of that
again devolves into bearucracy mitifgation, which
first principles would say fight the beauacracy not
prop up the mitigation.

2026-04-07 16:25:15 UTC

LLM is a brute force machine.
I think that's part of the disconnect between the pro and anti
people (i am clearly an anti person).
Any dialog is focusing on different things.
The pro people are focusing on utility ... valid.
The anti people are focusing on the infrastructure ... valid.
The deeper point is which of these has more impact
or strength of argument ?
The infrastructure does.
Because if it doesn't then the argument devolves into
"it's OK to do something bad if it brings utility"
I think that is the point that people like me are seeing
implicitly and the pro-AI ppl are like weirdly NOT
seeing.

I am bigoted against LLMs.
I know it and it is how I deal with the hype.
Meaning I can't constantly be reasonable and
figure out what is meant and the context of LLMs
and what people think about them.
It drains my brain power from other things.
And I have continually found nothing compelling.
Worse, I have typically found very frustrating
examples of people using very strong but implied
assumptions and using logic that depends utterly
on using blinders and ignoring reason.
Until the hype dies, I am not interested in them.
I am still interested in the old AI stuff like
for example path finding, NNs, and markov chains.

Now as an older edgy radical type I WANT TO PAY taxes that go to social and civil

That seems like heaven to me. A society that gives you a minimum to live

Even many liberals don't really want that when pressed. They want
