With two feet + of snow covering everything the last couple months, mushrooms have been hard to come by. But with the rapid melting over the past 10 days these Amber Jelly Rolls [Exidia recisa] have been uncovered and are ready for their flabby closeups.

When spring rolls around I’m always excited to see if past animals will again visit. Sometimes they seem to disappear for seasons on end, especially foxes, coyote, and bobcats. I wonder if they’ve moved to a new territory or perhaps didn’t survive the winter.
So I was quite happy to see Baby Porcupine, who is now a year old, rumbling down the trail and crossing Porcupine Bridge like an old pro. 😊

When I was growing up, my grandmother had a garden where she kept butterfly-attracting plants. In the middle was a birdfeeder.
She had her own set of names for the birds. I heard these names so often that I started to think of them that way. And they weren’t exactly flattering.
House Sparrows were Little Stinkers
Starlings were Crybabies
And Goldfinches were Piggers because they’d sit there and eat all the seed while the other birds had to wait their turns.
Some things don’t change.

Me: Errr… like Monday night I think.

Another Pippin story. She is very missed.
When Pippin first came into our lives at 12 weeks old, she came with her own furniture - a cozy kitten mat that she supposedly had commandeered from her 2 brothers. They were inseparable. (She and the mat, not the brothers 🤭.)
For 18 years when she wasn’t on my lap she could be found here.

Caught a bobcat on the trailcam carefully placing its paws in the footprints I had made a couple days before in the deep snow. When it gets to where I turned around, it looks around and decides - nope, not going out there, and turns to go down to the brook.

I thought I would share some of Pippin’s stories. She is very missed.
Age 2
Pippin was an innovator in cord management before it was a thing. 😂
She routinely would find the most difficult places to access, twist her little body to fit, and make the craziest places look comfy. When she was done, she’d carefully extract herself, and walk away, never pulling anything that shouldn’t be pulled, or knocking anything over.

About 16 inches of snow here (and still snowing!) Not much to show as everything is a mass of white marshmallows and I am still waiting for the plow. In the meantime enjoy these tracks of “Pancake Squirrel” doing a little circle that included a bellyflop.

When I rewatch my trailcam videos I occasionally spot something I missed the first time.

I often find myself on old logging roads. They were once wide, straight, alleys in the woods where large equipment crossed, grooving deep furrows, keeping green growth at bay and stomping each stone, leaf, and lichen covered branch out of sight.
Slowly it is being reclaimed. The ruts fill in, the width shrinks, and a new generation of trees begin.

When I got up this morning the brook was still about 75% covered with ice. Then the rain started and the temps are now at 55°F/13°C. You can see the yellowish ice under the surface as melting snow and rain rush over it. Large chunks of ice get dislodged and everything heads downstream.

Before last week’s snow, I was monitoring these Brick Cap mushrooms that were growing out of an old stump.
I took the first photo on 11/17. The second on 11/29.
In 12 days they should have fully come up, opened their caps, and been well on their way to falling apart. But the cold temps had other plans - stunting their growth almost entirely. Their caps changed color, but otherwise, like us, the chilly weather kept them in bed.

Mushrooms can have so many common names that some enthusiasts prefer to rely on scientific names only.
But… scientific names can also be frustrating. The Late Fall Oyster has gone through at least 5 genus changes before they settled on Sarcomyxa serotina…. though some resources will still only refer to it as Panellus serotinus.
So I’ll be over here enjoying my Late Fall Oysters. Or my Olive Oysterlings. Or my Mukitake. Or my Green Oysters.

If you peek under the cap of a mushroom you’ll most likely find gills or pores. These are key identifiers. But some mushrooms have “teeth.”
The aptly named Hedgehog Mushroom is one of these. Look at all those spiny little projections pointing out!

One thing I often pay attention to when looking for mushrooms is how 2, or even more, species can share the same branch. Sometime both are fresh, sometimes one is in decline while the other is just starting. Different fungal species can create a chain whereas the wood is decomposed over a long period of time.
Here there are 2 species of mushrooms, False Turkey Tail and Orange Jelly Spot sharing the same dead tree, but thriving in different sections.

With apologies to LOTR, Pippin got her name from when she was a kitten she’d hang upside down, usually by resting on a chair with her belly up and her head hanging down the side of the cushion. She looked like a little bat.
So we named her Pipistrelle, after a species of a very smol bat. That became Pippin.
At 18 she doesn’t quite do the hanging upside down thing anymore but with camera angles we can still reproduce her batlike namesake.

Last week I was bringing plants inside when I discovered two Red-backed Salamanders hanging out under one of the saucers.
Which isn’t too odd except that one of them was a yellow morph. Of the hundreds I’ve monitored over the years I’d estimate that 60% were the “gray” morph, 40% were the “red” morph, and only a handful were yellow or another color.
I’ve never found a Red and Yellow morph together! I quickly examined both before putting their “roof” back over them.

Today was 80° in western MA so we let Pippin decide if she’d like another try going outdoors (the last time, she hid under the bed when we took out her harness 🤭). She did great and her favorite part was going under the deck.
We didn’t really have a plan for that. 😂

Photos were taken 9 months apart. The first is from December and shows a shelf mushroom beginning to grow a second mushroom off itself, looking like a large marshmallow.
The second photo is from this past week and you can see the marshmallow grew into… a Mongolian sheepskin cap. 😄
