One thing I often pay attention to when looking for mushrooms is how 2, or even more, species can share the same branch. Sometime both are fresh, sometimes one is in decline while the other is just starting. Different fungal species can create a chain whereas the wood is decomposed over a long period of time.

Here there are 2 species of mushrooms, False Turkey Tail and Orange Jelly Spot sharing the same dead tree, but thriving in different sections.
