Haven’t ran qwen in a minute but it’s surprising you’re not getting higher throughput for gemma4 on your 3090s.
For what it’s worth if you use llama.cpp and disable reasoning you should see faster time to first byte at the cost of a slight degradation in quality. Haven’t used vllm so can’t comment there. I get 70-75 tok/s on a macbook m3 for comparison and only have 40 GPU cores

OpenCode and locally running GLM4.7-flash is surprisingly good. That can be done on a decent sized mac mini. It won’t keep up with frontier models but it’s far better than the average developer when used correctly.

Cellular automata (CA) are underrated.
Most people’s experience with them are simply Conway’s Game of Life or similar setups. The topic is much deeper than that though. Some 2D CA are in fact Turing complete [1] and can be used to perform any computation (albeit inefficiently).
So what? Why not just use python or if you're really bored use a transformer model? Because in this context it's not about doing the computation but rather what we can learn about computation in general. The beautiful thing about CA is that they are naturally visual and we can see emergent patterns at a glance while they work.
First consider that ALL scripts, models, charts, etc. on computers are discrete. Then understanding the simplest discrete systems (ie. CA) may give us an idea of the limitations of the more complex ones. In fact, even simple, deterministic systems can produce unpredictable behavior [2]. And sometimes even complex rules don’t lead to complex output.
It also turns out that there's a natural connection between convolutional neural networks and CA [3] so this touches on important topics in AI. This is the focus of my current research and I'm hoping to publish more on that eventually (not under this nym of course).
I recommend more people get creative with studying cellular automata.

It depends on which source you look at online; some are saying it’s already being rolled out and others say it’s in the process.
And in any case does it matter if it happens next week or happened last week? The contracts are signed and the robots are real and there’s clearly motivation to deploy these things. It’s not “years from now” from what the reports are saying. Whether those publishers are lying is a different story.

China has been deploying humanoid robots to its border with Vietnam [1]. This is just the beginning; expect this trend to proliferate to other countries over time and for the robots to become much more capable.
This raises a lot of obvious concerns but one that jumps out to me is the removal of the general public from its own security. Security is being outsourced away from the group who ostensibly wants to be secured and at the sole discretion of a class of people codified into law as “above everyone else” (ie. the State).
This is happening within the broader context of general automation where factories are being automated top to bottom in more and more industries. The general public has less influence in society at an unprecedented scale.
In AI circles there’s always been the concept of the “alignment problem” where researchers are worried about advanced AI being aligned with humans but until we can figure out alignment between groups of us there’s no real “extra” threat posed by advanced AI for the vast majority of people.

Since they didn't get a court ruling it didn't set a legal precedent, true, but it does affect the prosecution office's future policies and decisions on which charges to bring and who to target.
Imagine you're a target someday. You're more likely to take a plea than to fight the charge after seeing how much money it cost the Samourai devs and they still ended up in prison.
It makes the prosecution's job a little easier and they're gaining ground on their war on privacy.

This is how email centralized too. All of the activity centralized into a few service providers because of spam and the inconvenience of running the servers.
In this case the banks will custody Bitcoin and refuse to send to addresses that haven’t been approved. Over time coins flow into their system and don’t leave. Of course they can’t do that right away but it’s coming.
Run a node. Self custody. Teach self custody.

Probably at least partially because they added “tail emissions” and therefore there’s no limit to the supply. It’s better than fiat of course but that’s heresy for most of us.
Another reason, as far as I can tell, is that due to its nature auditing the existing supply is nontrivial and if there’s an inflation bug for example then it can go unnoticed for a long time.
Others also point out that it’s not as anonymous as its proponents claim although I’ve never looked too much into it so can’t weigh in there.
And finally there’s the attack on privacy in general and online you can’t tell the difference between genuine public opinion and manufactured opinion from shitheads like the ECB. There’s very likely a lot of propaganda against it (not to say there’s not genuine disgust from real bitcoiners 😂).

Where are you getting the idea you can’t run a bitcoin node or lightning node from home? I personally run a bitcoin node at home and have for years. It’s not even difficult actually.
It sounds like you’re not a fan of bitcoin in general? To each their own I guess but to say that you want self custody and that because homes don’t come standard with nodes bitcoin isn’t worthwhile is a contradiction.
Running the software is a fundamental part of self custody otherwise you’re trusting other people to process your transactions and to be honest about it.

Lightning network channels are secured by the same miners since it’s just users exchanging signed bitcoin transactions out of band. At any point either party in the channel can broadcast the latest transaction and settle on chain. Up until that point it’s the same cryptography that secures all the other UTXOs.
You can run a lightning node from home on top of your standard bitcoin node so you don’t have to share control any more than you do for the base chain.
For what it’s worth I agree that lightning isn’t ideal especially for beginners but I use it all the time and it mostly works fine. Had my fair share of frustrations with it too.

Can you explain what you mean about it not being a “p2p proof of work cryptocurrency like bitcoin”.
It’s a network of 2-2 multisig contracts on bitcoin. The proof of work is derived from the sats locked up in the contracts. It’s not meant to be a separate cryptocurrency because it’s just a way of using Bitcoin in the end.

There are! Once you allow the axiom of infinity you end up with an infinite number of distinct infinities actually; we say that they each have different "cardinality." I had to prove all sorts of statements about infinite sets in a topology course I took years ago but I'm rusty at this point.
A set is said to be infinite if there exists a bijection between itself and a proper subset. So for example, there's a 1-1 mapping between the set of integers and the set of even integers: for each integer multiply it by 2 and you get the evens; for each even integer divide it by 2 and you get the whole set of integers again. That doesn't work for any finite set.
And suppose you have an infinite set, S. Then the set of all subsets of S (called the power set of S) actually has a higher cardinality than S itself and there doesn't exist a bijection between S and its power set even though both are infinite.
However, again all that supposes you accept the concept of an infinity in the first place because only then can you construct all those things. Modern math assumes it as a given.

ZF(C) set theory is the basis of modern math and includes the axiom of infinity; something we grant as obvious. "There's no number so big that you can't add 1 to it."
Yet nothing we can observe or measure in reality is infinite. Not the size of the observable universe nor all observable particles in it nor even all possibles states of all observable particles (hot take; see below for explanation).
Should we really use that axiom?
Even the digits of pi can’t be fully observed. Spend all available resources building as many computers as you can and use all matter for computation from now until the heat death of the universe and nothing and nobody will ever experience or observe more than a finite number of digits of pi.
You could argue that we need irrational numbers for algebraic closure. Fine. But even then, in practice on computers or in hand written solutions only finite-precision representations exist. Not a single engineering project in existence relies on full precision of pi or the square root of 2. Yes, even the LHC and LIGO.
"But the ratio of the circumference of a circle and its diameter is pi. That ratio has infinite precision." Well, almost! That assumes a Platonic ideal circle; you're introducing new assumptions even in such a basic concept. Good luck creating such a perfect circle in reality (nothing against the band with MJK). The total curvature theorem that gives us some multiple of pi for any closed loop rewrites integrating over a continuous set so implicitly assumes infinity (ie. infinitely divisible).
What about quantum mechanics? Hilbert spaces as far as the eyes can see! We need a state space rich enough to represent continuous observables like momentum. But that's a circular argument! We claim the observables are continuous but as far as I can tell that's just an assumption. Our theories break down below the planck length which means we can't just assume spacetime is continuous; at best it's a useful approximation.
Continuous spacetime also creates problems like black hole singularities. I think most physicists agree singularities are a flaw in the models and don't represent reality. Quoting Oppenheimer:
"Physically such a singularity would mean that the expression used for the energy-momentum tensor does not take account of some essential physical fact which would really smooth the singularity out. Further ... it is impossible for a singularity to develop in a finite time" - 'On Continued Gravitational Contraction'
And according to Hawking eventually black holes dissipate thus removing the singularity. You can't go from infinite to finite density in finite time yet that's the best our theories have come up with.
We have tools like renormalization to cut out the infinities in some sense and to be honest I don't fully understand the logic there, but it ultimately boils down to using infinities to cancel out other infinities that pop up in our models that, yeah you guessed it, are built on continuous space and therefore more infinities!
In conclusion, as far as I can tell all uses of infinities are useful approximations to make math easier but have quite possibly led us astray.

Been seeing a lot of negative sentiment about Bitcoin lately. Why?
I transferred fiat between two banks accounts the other day and it’s still pending. Can’t use it at all for a few more days. Want to send more than $1k to a family member in need? Can’t do it with zelle or venmo in just one payment.
That fiat money you shoved under your mattress back in 2021? It buys fewer goods and services now but Bitcoin buys more. Maybe it didn’t outperform the AI bubble but that’s fine. Savings isn’t the same as investment; never has been.
Bitcoin is a better payment rail and it’s not even close. It’s a better savings technology for those who plan to live beyond the next 4 years. For the first time we have digital money we can actually own!
Nobody said a monetary revolution would be easy. Don’t cry about it. Appreciate all the cypherpunks out there who gave us options.

In hindsight, in my humble opinion, javascript was a mistake. It opened a pandora’s box of complexity that’s made browser implementation difficult to secure and over time led to centralization.
Now only a handful of implementations exist and modern websites are painful to browse without an ad blocker and other extensions. Couple that with the big companies shoving privacy invading AI into the browsers as fast as possible and the war on ad-blocking and we’re accelerating into a situation where users have no control over the content they see.
However, just like Nostr is trying to fix social media (and other stuff) I think we’ll find a way to break the browser oligopoly.

The term vote implies the action carries one of two values but zaps give you also magnitude so it tells you more. That alone means “vote” is not the right word.
On top we can react with emojis each of which carries information distinct from “yes/no/abstain” so again I think “vote” is not the right idea.

Writing open source privacy software (legally protected by first amendment; see Bernstein v USA) and posting effectively politically incorrect jokes (also legally protected by the first amendment) resulted in jail time.
At no point did they have control over anyone else’s funds. This case shows a clearly corrupted justice system. This happened to all of us in this community and we would do well to take lessons from Phil Zimmerman [1].
It will not get better on its own. The least you can do is talk to your friends and family about the need for privacy and free speech and show how both are under attack. If capable, build better systems. We all have a role to play. #FreeSamourai

The beauty of the protocol is that you can implement clients that can rate limit content per user. You can do simple things like only show the first 3 posts per user per day or as complex as having a local LLM read each message and categorize it based on your criteria and filter out low effort content. With that setup you can follow a much larger set of npubs.

It’s nearly impossible to create a new browser these days largely because of just how large and expansive the web standards have grown. And because we’re all held hostage by the big tech companies and their browser implementations they’re adding malicious features like having AI read and interact with every page it visits.
If you look at most websites they all have a very similar look and feel or at least fit into one of a handful of categories. It’s time to create a new, intentionally limited, spec that lets content providers still do business but without all the complex interactivity like modals, javascript, async loading, etc. that just bloats the standards.
Consider how limited bitcoin transactions are by comparison. Many people complain and say you can’t build things properly on Bitcoin and yet we have a working system delivering value to millions of people. The simplicity is a feature.

There’s a lot of talk these days about humanoid robots but I have yet to see anything about securing them.
We can’t secure our phones but we want a robot army walking around in every house and factory? How many OEMs have released unsecured routers, cars, security cameras, etc that leave customers exposed to the battlefield we call the Internet?
Honestly, until we figure that out having robots everywhere is just a liability in my opinion.

There’s a lot of passive income flowing into SP500 from 401k contributions to prop it up. Only once the business cycle rolls over or some acute event will we see that decline, right?
I think Bitcoin is a leading indicator in this case. The gov shutdown drained the economy when it was already weak. On top of that massive deleveraging last month that surely wiped out some big players.
Even gold, which central banks have been stacking hard, is down nearly 10% off its ATH.

Credit card debt is surging, auto loan delinquencies near all time highs for subprime borrowers, commercial real estate is struggling, millions in the US went many weeks without pay recently due to the shutdown, etc.
None of that recovers in just a few weeks which means we’ve got plenty of dip left to go.

Liquidity continues to drain. Expect more of this for a while. Consider how the government shutdown, which left a LOT of people without paychecks for many weeks, trickles out into the rest of the economy.
On top of that we had a lot of DOGE layoffs prior to that which also drains liquidity. Combine that with having had interest rates higher for longer than many expected and debt rolling over at higher rates in the commercial real estate market and other highly leveraged sectors and you can see why despite all the bullish news we’ve had sustained drawdowns.
Credit card debt is surging. Auto loans are falling behind. It’s looking really bad for the US economy which is looking relatively good compared to many other “advanced economies.”
It’s anyone’s guess but personally I don’t see this turning around until well after the Fed and the treasury decide to actively stimulate. No real news on that front. Likely early next year or later. There are still lingering concerns about government funding I think as well.

If you measure your net worth in sats and have net income then dips (however prolonged) are beneficial.
It’s only when you measure your net worth in fiat that dips become stressful.
You could argue that with fiat denominated liabilities and lower price that your purchasing power has declined. That’s unavoidable.
Until you’ve onboarded all of your dependencies (food supplier, energy, etc) onto the network you’ll have to play the fiat games. This is why merchants accepting bitcoin is critical. Ideally directly and in self custody since in that case the trade can truly be denominated in sats.
Having a corporation in the middle, even if well intentioned, leaves room for fiat shenanigans to creep in and where possible should be avoided. This is not to say the recent work by Block is bad or unhelpful because I do appreciate their role in introducing bitcoin to millions of people. We just have a lot more work to do.

Thinking about the filters debate, it dawned on me that it's all a moot point: 80 bytes may be enough to use as a latent space in an autoencoder [1].
For example, you could encode an image (ie. embed it in the latent space), convert the latent vector to a consensus valid address, and publish to the chain. Then you release the decoder half of the autoencoder publicly (say on nostr) and anyone could interpret that image (or any image encoded with the encoder half) if they ran the decoder.
That's effectively what happens when inscribing a jpeg. Granted we use traditional software for rendering/decoding the image but I don't see much distinction.

Baby steps towards a Dyson Sphere [1].
Initially this is a satellite constellation around the earth but over a long enough timespan it’s a race to capture as much energy as possible from the sun.
And if this works you can imagine ASICs making their way up to space too since electricity makes up a large percentage of the operating costs.
If starship makes good on its promise to drive the cost of space access down 100x and we already have the research and designs for running servers efficiently in space (from this Google project eventually) then ASICs quickly follow.

People were hating on Gensler for pushing back on ETFs but have you considered that maybe an ETF for money doesn’t make sense and those products encourage the “bitcoin is property; lever up against it instead” narrative?
It was inevitable that Wall St would show up but it’s not something to celebrate. They blew a hole in the housing market years ago and we still haven’t fully recovered. They’re not good bedfellows.

This is why we need to focus more on using it as money (ie increase demand) than “store of value” because that’s just a dead end into ETFs.
Also, people’s expectations were way out of line this cycle. It’s the first time since Bitcoin has been around that central banks around the world have actively fought inflation. Liquidity has been draining off and on the past two years. The 4 year cycle thesis misled many.

What a crazy coincidence all those predatory bitcoin loans came on to the market with high interest and terrible LTV ratio requirements right before the price took a nosedive so that debtors have to pledge even more collateral or just straight up lose what they’ve loaned against. The banks got lucky!

Agreed about LLMs reinforcing errors. They aren't grounded the same way software like Mathematica are and can lead students astray.
For now I think they could be useful for people to explore ideas that lend well to verifiable feedback. For example, writing software that has a compiler or the user can manually inspect the output to see if it aligns with their vision. It opens the doors to try out things that we may otherwise forego because the expected payoff is too low.

In one of my first courses on linear algebra we were taught how to do things by hand initially but from there we did everything in Mathematica.
That may seem like "cheating" or that the students wouldn't retain the lesson since a computer was doing all the work. I strongly disagree with that view in hindsight.
We were able to explore visually what matrices did to the inputs. For example, eigenvectors are the axes along which some action would happen and the eigenvalues determine the quality and degree (ie. reflection, expansion, contraction, etc.). If you're doing calculations by hand it's hard to get enough examples to build intuition and without spending a lot of time you can't "tinker with" the numbers to the same extent.
The same is going to be true of LLMs and similar tech. Sure, they can do a lot of "thinking" for you and some will argue it leads to brain rot (and maybe it will!) but it also enables you to explore many more possibilities in your finite time than you otherwise could.

Don’t let media of any kind (news, social, etc) distract you. They thrive on your attention and in the end you’ll have many hours/days/weeks of frustration and resentment to show for it.
What has become possible with AI these days is nothing short of insane and now is the time to build. That nagging problem you’ve had with that product or service the last few years? Replace it.
In the last two weeks I’ve stopped listening to any podcasts, browsing hacker news, and anything similar and in that time I’ve built two separate production grade systems to solve real problems I had both at work and personal life.
One of them replaces software I used with family for years and the other was something entirely new that saves me a lot of headaches at work. Minimal dependencies and none on third party platforms.
And although I’ve been writing software for two decades I built these without writing a single line of the code. Full test suite, manually reviewed, etc but the point is that we’re at a point where almost anyone can do it. Most of that was written while I was doing other things like eating lunch, in a meeting, or cooking. Don’t wait for someone else to build your app for you.

Bitcoin itself is a filter: it’s an economic filter. Fiat is no filter.
Filters are a form of firewall.
I can’t shake this idea of using bitcoin as part of a network firewall. Anyone know of good papers on this topic?

If there exists such a technology that would give you total dominance over a critical domain and you can’t guarantee you’ll have a monopoly on such tech then your best move is to work on preventing anyone else from getting that monopoly. That is the core principle behind decentralization.

So then the distinction comes from the idea that a payment transaction comes with the promise of a future fee (or generations of future fees) whereas a data transaction is a dead end.

I agree in spirit, but isn’t this also an argument for something akin to property taxes?
“Your UTXO hasn’t moved in 10 years but it’s being secured. You haven’t paid any fees this whole time.”
When you amortize the cost of your transaction over long enough it’s effectively the same argument, no?
In any case spam sucks and I’m not in favor of making it easier to do.

Interesting idea but one thing to consider is that you’re double counting a lot of users. Everyone on the lightning network is already on the bitcoin network for example.
