21 hours is not 'marathon negotiations'.
Two or three weeks, several continents, teams of 50+ experts on both sides, every entertainment from golf to strip clubs. Followed by months of ongoing talks between lawyers, accountants, and engineers.
Another week or so of mutual entertainment, stupidly extravagant meals, etc. Finally everything is signed.
That was just a voice over IP and network upgrade, with five year support outsourcing.
It takes me 21 hours to negotiate a car.

We use the large (maybe 2 L) corelle serving bowl with a plate for a lid to do microwave popcorn. Pretty much perfect for 1/4 cup of kernels at 4 minutes.
Sometimes I'll add oil or butter;other times just sprinkle with cheap grated pizza cheese.

I've seen lots of stuffing fails. One of the worst was a stuffed fish. Stuffing was bread crumb, butter, raw shrimp & scallops, and egg.
The egg hadn't set. Which means it didn't get to sauna temperatures. Much less sterilizing...
It was on a buffet.

I've done lots of cavity stuffed turkeys, ducks, chickens, etc. for restaurant work.
The key to food safety there is to precook the stuffing and put it in about halfway through the bird cooking process.
The stuffing starts at 160F/71C, and the bird is at about 100F/37C. You track both meat temp and stuffing temp. It's a bit of a PITA, but lots of people like the effect.

I'm sure it'd work for me eventually, but it looks like a lot of math. I'd really need to lay hands on one and go from there.
Even then, I'm a bass player for a reason. We do it slow and low.

Sinatra knew how to project, and how to use a microphone. He also had sound engineers who could actually build a gain structure.
The big mic with a pop filter is so they can spit on the mic to get extra proximity effect "presence", instead of doing the above.

Everyone wants a gold star after an exercise, and they plan accordingly.
My philosophy is the opposite. I want a harsh two days of lessons learned after an exercise.
Every class I teach has at least one lab question that's past 95%+ of student capabilities.
But it pushes them. We deconstruct the problem, discuss and learn afterwards.
And every now and again a class beats the wicked problem...usually by working together.
Then we deconstruct the problem, discuss and learn.

Let's just say that for three years in a row I wrote detailed exercise scenarios, and for three years in a row they were rejected as "too hard".
MFs refuse to understand that the way to find failure points in an exercise is to exercise to the point of failure. If you can't survive breaking the system during play time, you absolutely will not survive when the system actually fails.
Sorry for the rant, I have strong feelings.

Years ago I helped review disaster plans for a 500ish bed hospital. Assuming no external infrastructure failure, you can get 50% out in 6-8 hours. In 24 hours you can bring that number to 75-85%.
That doesn't move patients into other hospitals, it just gets them off campus.

I'm just thinking back on my defcon trips (mainly 8-15ish) and wondering how that feeling flows in a semi-theocratic oligarchy.
Bahrain is one of the more liberal spots in the region.

I've seen the Guadalupe and the rest of the Hill Country creeks and rivers at what I thought was the worst they could get:
bouncing 4 foot diameter live oaks downriver like toothpicks,
Chevy Blazers rolled by less than a foot of water.
And debating how to safely do recovery from 20 feet up in a tree.
This is event was an order of magnitude worse than anything I've seen.
We need to face a very harsh fact:
Everything we think we know about the climate and expected maximum worst weather is right out the feckin window.
Policy makers aren't going to be prepared and more people will die, many more will be displaced and bankrupted.
We all need to be ready for this. Check your flood and fire maps. Have plans. Build a support network, and give support.

I know the area well and have been through the floods of 1987, 2002, 2006 & had lots of friends impacted by 2015.
A friend of mine has a place near the headwaters of the south fork of the Guadalupe, 5-6 miles above Camp Mystic. It's been in the family since it was part of Mexico. It has the original schoolhouse for the area on it, from 1836. I've spent probably more than a year cumulative there and lived in the area more than a decade. They remember the floods.
The family had a girls camp there in the 1970s-80s. The cabin footings are 6 feet above the 1936 high water line. The cabins are an additional 6 feet above that, sitting on 2x2 foot concrete piers poured directly onto limestone bedrock. In 1997ish I helped the owners anchor the floor joists and hurricane strap the walls and roofs.
At least one of those cabins is gone.
As is the dam which was built in the 1910s -- more than 2 foot thick concrete with down river buttressing extending > 10 feet.
I'm pretty sure the main building at Camp Mystic was the original from 1926. I've seen pictures of cabins *uphill* from the main building with walls missing.
Crider's Dance Hall and Rodeo* was 100% feet dry in 1987. I had lunch there when we were doing SAR. The main bar is well above most of the property. The pool tables were flipped by the force of the water. Today they were going to celebrate 100 years in business.
The Hunt Store -- easily 30 feet above the first flood plain (which is 10 feet above nominal) -- is wrecked and the owner is asking not to be contacted.
This isn't a problem of not remembering. This storm several sigmas past the worst seen in written history. All the river gauges I've seen so far go off scale at 20-25 feet, and stay off line for hours.
First pass guess by looking at the damage done, the crest on the south fork was 40+ feet.
The local officials didn't assess the risk appropriately and didn't have an appropriate notification plan. And to some extent I blame them for the loss of life.
There are also long-standing issues of lack of infrastructure:
There aren't gauges that far up the river -- where the floods start.
There's nothing like a flood warning siren system.
In the 1990s we had a telephone tree, where the upstream land owners would call us, and we'd call places further down, letting them know that they needed to pull stuff up from the river. Apparently that died at some point.
I haven't been back in that area in a while, mainly because I don't fit in politically any more, but even so I mourn.
*Yes, Dance Hall and Rodeo is a thing; and was a helluva good time too.

I tried sewing through the tape, thinking it would reinforce things.
Result: sticky needles and lots of alcohol cleaning things after.
With double side tape the seams are almost as strong as the material. If you double the seam ( kind like a top stitched seam), or reinforce it with a second strip, it's stronger than the material.
I tested emergency storm sails to destruction, the material flogged itself to death at the roped edges before the seams failed. (Almost an hour of close hauled beam winds >30kt, gusting 40+ on a Catalina 22 on a very small lake)

I've done sail prototyping with construction tyvek. Sewing it with anything other than the 'weird irregular zigzag' just gave a nice perforated "tear here" line. A friend who does upholstery pointed me in the direction of tyvek tape. Much better, and a helluva lot faster too.

I worked a DSL colo space in Montgomery that required our interconnects all be Bell standard compliant, 9 turn wire wrap, with soldered tail.
I was basically one of two people in the company thar could do it consistently. Did 8k pairs with a SW Bell employee watching me as an escort. They did everything they could to keep us from using their copper.

I had a student ask me why so many OT/ICS devices are so brittle about things like this. I didn't have an immediate answer.
Later that day I remembered that there's an entire fleet of PV solar inverters running a TCP stack written by a friend of mine who at the time had zero understanding of networking -- as in I had to tell him about netmasking and gateways while he was working on that project.

I'm fine with unlimited H1Bs, provided:
- the job pays a minimum 4x average single earner income of the US, or the state, whichever is more.
- any direct family accompanying gets a work permit
- it immediately begins a 5-10 year path to citizenship, with being laid-off/fired after 6 months not being a reason for visa revocation, provided they can get re-employed within a reasonable period.
I've seen too many H1Bs working for half the going rate, with a spouse working under the table because they were dragged along with no work permit, and willing to do 80 hour weeks because if they lose the job they're kicked out of the country.
I think those alterations would fix much of the abuse of the system.

I accidentally did an experiment:
I've got a garden border made out of random logs from the farm. All were cut 2-3 years ago. We've got a very active ecosystem out there. The logs are in ground contact, and exposed to the sun.
The oak is nearly pulp and will be raked up on to beds probably next fall. The walnut and cherry are beginning to degrade, but definitely aren't even really beginning to compost. The pine has lost its bark in places where borers got underneath it.

Fruit, walnut, and conifers are all slow to rot because of the terpenes. I'd suspect that'd have something to do with it. After all pine oil is used as a disinfectant.

Drip line under a layer of leaf / grass clipping / woodchip (depends on where it is and what we have to hand).
If we'd known the fall drought was going to be this bad, we probably would have pruned everything down some and covered it with low tunnel ag cloth. Fewer leaves means less evaporative loss. And the low tunnel holds some humidity in and keeps the plants from scorching in the sun.
This is going into the Lessons Learned folder. We're going to be a lot more aggressive early on when the predictions start coming up with 10+ days of no rain.

We're pouring water through drip line faster than we did in August. Peppers and watermelon are still doing things. But I can't justify doubling the water just to put fava beans and winter rye in as covers. We may make a little money off the fava in the spring, but it'd be 1/20th the cost of the water at this point.

I'm guessing it's a different bamboo than the types we have around here. Our bamboo leaves will leach out a naturally-occuring, damn near 100% effective herbicidal compound. I use bamboo leaf cover as a last resort getting rid of things like poison ivy.

Very cool that we can do this now.
I had that problem with an old stove a few years ago. Couldn't find a replacement knob for <$50. A friend who does apartment maintenance sent me to the basically secret appliance parts store in town (trades only, no civilians). I got a "universal" knob set for about $12, after they called my friend to make sure I was OK to sell to. Four shaft types, two knob sizes, plates for indicator marks -- four of each. The shafts snap into the knobs (my friend recommended gluing after assembly). Helped me limp that stove along for a good several years.

Given lots of the upstream for recycled pulp is explicitly coated in PFAS I assume all recycled paper products has PFAS contaminiation.
As of early this year the PFAS in food containers is being phased out, but that'll take a long time to catch up.
It's also really hard to tell what glues and inks were used, if the box was impregnated with poisons to keep rats out, etc.
I don't think it's worth the risk of poisoning the land when thick layers of leaves or local wood chips do at least as good a job.

It gets worse. Some old cars (especially british ones) were positive ground. Some, but not all, used black for negative (hot) and red for positive (chassis ground).
And there was one I worked on that had two 6v batteries, and a split electrical system: a positive chassis ground, red at -6v, blue at -12v...except where it'd been worked on and they'd spliced reds into the blue system.
I learned how to hand rewind a relay because of that.

While germination rate does go down with time, there shouldn't be too much worry about five year old beans. 95%+ germination is crucial when you're planting thousands of seeds for commercial production. 75% is perfectly fine for most home gardeners.
Especially when the first person to take those home should be bringing back renewed seed when the season is over.
