It gets worse. Some old cars (especially british ones) were positive ground. Some, but not all, used black for negative (hot) and red for positive (chassis ground).
And there was one I worked on that had two 6v batteries, and a split electrical system: a positive chassis ground, red at -6v, blue at -12v...except where it'd been worked on and they'd spliced reds into the blue system.
I learned how to hand rewind a relay because of that.
