I submitted a short piece of writing for publication by a friend and they wrote back with opinions from both editors concurring 'no notes!'

thank you for sharing this. I am trying to tell my own family stories — the process is not rigorous enough to call it 'history' — and I can't find a birth certificate for my great-grandma. She was a fierce woman, enormously proud, not afraid of controversy. I suspect she was an informal adoption, like your grandma Ida, which would explain the lack of a paper trail.

I am actually pretty happy with my cleaning solution — it's just a mix of 1 part each of dishwashing liquid, vinegar and water in a spray bottle or dish wand. The vinegar content stops mould from growing where I've cleaned. But a mop with a magic cloth head could pick up the dust and dirt left behind after spraying and scrubbing 🤩

I had my follow-up appointment with the cardiologist this morning and this time around he had access to a full suite of approved scans.
He thinks there's definitely cardiac asthma and there is some myopathy caused by overwork in the rest of the heart surrounding the dodgy valve.
I have a referral for more scans and a cardiac surgery consult, because it may now be too late for a valve replacement. That fact is alarming and enraging in equal measure.

Ibuprofen will make bleeding and bruising more severe, even though it is fabulous for stopping inflammation. I don't want to seem like I am pushing Celebrex but it has the same mechanism, is less 'bleedy' and easier on your tummy, too.

Here's one interesting thing I learned during the advocacy around alkyl nitrites.
Anal intercourse has a reputation for being painful and this made our advocacy strategy intelligible to a committee of old, white and almost entirely cishet male doctors.
HOWEVER.
Did you know the same proportion of people report pain during anal intercourse as during vaginal intercourse???
Yet we normalise PIV as painless and stigmatise ppl with vaginismus as disordered!

He was SUPER AMUSED to learn about the strategy I pursued with the Nitrite Action Group to persuade the TGA not to ban alkyl nitrites.
We convinced them that painful anal intercourse is a disorder and inhaled alkyl nitrites are the only available treatment. And that's true! He got it immediately and thought it was really funny.

I went in for the yearly face-to-face appointment that lets me have telehealth appointments with the bulk billing GP that I like.
I was there to re-up my mental health care plan and renew some scripts.
GP asked me literally dozens of chewy questions about my PhD research and then the cheeky bugger charged me for a long appointment 😩 🤣

The main conference in my field (AIDS2024) has fully hybrid delivery, and its platform includes functions that let you find and chat and network with other attendees... and nobody uses them. I think the barriers are social rather than technical.
Earlier this year I co-authored a paper at an NZ confie with a friend and colleague. I Zoomed in to deliver my bit and take part in Q&A. I actually felt included and represented because of that collaboration. Could that be an option for you?

Thurs is normally take-out night but I am le broke so I am pulling random things out of the freezer and crisper to cook.
1. Xinjiang style dry-rub lamb ribs.
2. Brown basmati rice, flavoured with a little ghee and more cumin.
3. Charred cabbage wedges with browned butter and ras el-hanout (i.e. MOAR CUMIN!!!).

I had to draggg my ass to the kitchen but, as it almost always does, cooking improved my mood. Dug out the gochujang (chilli paste) and gochugaru (chilli flakes). Added them to honey, sake, sesame oil and an enormous amount of microplaned garlic, as a marinade for the pork fillet Coles sent me as a substitute for smoked ham hock (hmm). When the rice-cooker is done I will stir-fry the pork and add green onions, sliced brown onion, and 1lb kimchi, before letting that all stew gently for 20 mins.
