Gemma Carey was a friend, my employer and one of my PhD supervisors, very much in the past tense on all counts, and she died unexpectedly last week. Despite our falling out I've found the news incredibly distressing. Speculation is so unhelpful. Gemma was Extremely Online and the media coverage of her death is focusing on her tweets, which is predictable but completely overlooks her stellar academic career. My thoughts are with her husband Ben and their 2yo as they grapple with this loss.
