My CNC's dust shoe broke several times, and now that it's more epoxy than dust shoe, I decided I'd make a new one. Because I can!
This was an interesting test of TPU for brush bristles. I ended up having to take scissors to them (they were too long), but I'm pretty happy how that turned out. Suction is decent too, which is nice.

Each one is about a third of a kg of filament and stores two spools. There's a one-spool version too, but I find it's less efficient, as that takes a quarter kg. So it's between one spool stores six kg, or one spool stores four.

Dear filament manufacturers: if you're going to claim your filament is 'high-flow', either provide a racetrack or shut the fuck up. Stop lying to people. IME _every time_ I have seen a 'high flow' claim, it was basically a marketing lie attached to a price increase.
Brought to you by me getting nerdsniped into testing a PETG advertised as 'high-flow'... which couldn't even beat _PETG-CF_ at the same temperature.

@nprofile…8d6j I would generally avoid any 'miniature-specific' paints. They're overpriced, mix badly, and have absurdist names that don't have any relation to the colour. Oh, and the ranges change all the time!
'Phthalo Blue, Green Shade' is a universal truth of painting. 'Coal Black' (which is actually green!) is a meaningless word salad specific to a range that could (and probably will!) change in a few years.

@nprofile…8d6j Goldens are definitely the peak acrylic paint, and cost accordingly. Any other artist acrylic will also work. Ensure that you get a 'fluid' or 'light body' (not a 'heavy body'), and also check that they are single-pigment paints where possible to make for better mixing.

If you would rather have something more 'traditional' to use with the kind of stuff you'd find in tutorials (layering, base-shade-highlight), I am a huge fan of Golden Fluid Acrylics, which can be had from any Gordon Harris.

#3DPrinting Fedi: I am looking for a riser for the lid of my Creality K1 Max, as I'm getting a bit sick of all the reverse Bowden routing issues in the stock design. However, I need the following requirements to be met:
* No air vents in the riser, at least as an option.
* The ability to externally mount the filament sensor.
* Not too much plastic use (as far as reasonable).
Any good suggestions? I've seen a bunch of designs, but don't know which to pick.

@nprofile…j3y3 Bambu printers are an unacceptably proprietary solution for me. However, that's not the point I'm making here. What I meant was that the uber-cheap Anycubic Mono 2, which is in the same category as, for example, the Neptune 3 Pro price-wise, worked _way_ better and with _way_ less stupid hassles, than said Neptune 3 Pro. More generally, resin printers, even at the very low end, seem way more reliable than equivalent low-end FDM machines.

@nprofile…j3y3 It's because almost nobody on Youtube is doing SLA prints that aren't minis. I've done it a few times, and it's pretty damn useful in some niche cases, which is where heating for strength could be super nice.
A good example? Printing out of a tough resin, then heated curing for strength in return for some flexibility loss. Still very good impact resistance, but now it won't bend in a stiff wind.

@nprofile…j3y3 Heated cure stations are something that could do with being more common, since this can increase both clarity (for translucent resins) and strength. _Prusa_ of all people have numbers to back at least one of these up, because they're one of the few vendors of such units.
I'd just like a wash station I can just plonk my plate into.

@nprofile…j3y3 There's kind of ... less to fiddle with when it comes to SLA printing? The main improvements lately have been various smart features (pressure sensors to detect junk in the vat, smart lifting, etc), or just better build quality (heated vats, a pouring spout that isn't awful), etc. FDM on the other hand is an endless fiddle fest: it's just now, the _manufacturers_ do most of the fiddling. Unless you're me.

@nprofile…ndjm Given that a lot of 'fix this obvious issue in PrusaSlicer' PRs have languished for weeks or even months, if they even got merged at all, I question the truth of the 'we could reimplement all this' claim.
Well, that, and the wifi-over-serial design choice that forced Prusa to invent an entirely new binary G-Code format only they use. Seriously, that was the most wtf engineering I have ever seen. I doubt they have the staff hours or the staff competence to do what they claim.

@nprofile…sutl The only things that have changed recently is me updating the system. The Orca Slicer I run normally is an AppImage, but this happens with a Flatpak too, and also with Orca Slicer I build from source, which tells me that userland deps are unlikely to be the culprit.
I'll try a kernel rollback, since this would change kernel drivers for my graphics card.

I'm having the _weirdest_ issue with Orca Slicer. At random, when I load it up, it either fails to render tab contents (the 'outer interface' renders, but the tab is a grey slab), or after a while, the tab freezes and ignores all commands (doesn't rotate, right click doesn't bring up a menu, buttons do nothing, etc).
It happens no matter what I do: AppImage, Flatpak, even a build from source! It started recently, and seems to happen largely at random.

Some Dungeon Blocks terrain I've been printing. I used a 0.1mm layer height modifier for the top parts (thanks @nprofile…x2x0 for teaching me about that!), but forgot to apply it on some of the tiles. Really shows too.
These prints were done in ABS, and despite this being the cheapest, garbagiest ABS I can buy, the K1 Max (plus all mods) handled it well.

The #Gridfinity will continue until morale improves.
This was my first proper project using ABS-GF, and I'm _really_ happy with it. Even if the grey attracts _every_ spec of dirt and grime in a ten-mile radius. Major, _major_ props to the (author of) the Gridfinity addon for #FreeCAD. The dice tray, as well as the bin for d6s, were both generated in it.

@nprofile…p9pu @nprofile…26sn The reason the Unicorn works with the K1 series Flow Tech hotend is because the only difference between Unicorns and Flow Techs is that Flow Techs have a thinner integrated heatbreak. This is why they need a copper adapter for a K1 series Flow Tech to fit into a K1 series heatsink.
The SV08 Flow Tech replaces the existing heatsink on the SV08, and thus, would expect the thin integrated heatbreak of a Flow Tech nozzle. Thus, a Unicorn wouldn't fit.

@nprofile…p9pu @nprofile…26sn FWIW, the K1 series Flow Tech hotend is literally the same design as stock: ceramic heater, same length. The differences are:
* Cables are all at the back, unlike stock, where one is at the front for some reason; and
* There is a metal tube around the rear of the ceramic core.
This is why this trick with Unicorns can work.

@nprofile…p9pu @nprofile…26sn AFAIK, 'Flow Tech' is just a brand. The hotends are different for each printer they support. Thus, while all Flow Tech hotends fit Flow Tech nozzles, only the K1 series hotend can fit Unicorns. This has to do with their shape and size, as they are meant to be drop-in replacements.

You could in theory build a Xenomorph: https://www.printables.com/model/1002270-xenomorph-toolhead-for-sovol-sv08 . This supports a lot of different hotends, so you could pick one you like.

#FDM folks who own a K1 series printer: I've made a discovery (well, _confirmed_ a discovery) regarding the MicroSwiss Flow Tech hotend. If you don't install the copper throat adapter, you can (and should) use Unicorn nozzles (and clones) instead of MicroSwiss's proprietary overpriced ones. They fit just fine, and work just fine.

@nprofile…4rgp I'm at 230C already, so not too much higher I can go. I dread to imagine what you think of as a _big_ nozzle if you think 1mm is 'very tiny', lol.
I could widen perimeters a bit I guess - I'm currently on 1.02mm EW, so more might help. Reducing accelerations is definitely happening.

I can try lowering accelerations. The print speed is really low anyway (we're talking like ~70mm/s tops), so I don't think lower accels would make much of a difference.

#FDM Fedi, I need some assistance. I've just started using a 1mm nozzle (no, not a typo), and I'm getting this weird corner-rounding-type effect when printing, but _only_ from layer 2 onwards. First layers go down fine without problem.
I first thought this was a pressure advance issue, but changing that setting didn't have any effect. Even disabling pressure advance completely didn't do anything!
Does anyone have any idea what this might be and how to fix it?

Answering my own question: the setting is called 'Clearance', and defaults to 0.25. I went up to 0.5 and found that to be too much even, so probably about 0.3 or so would have done it.

I've tried using the Gridfinity addon for #FreeCAD recently, and it's super useful! However, I have a small problem in that the tolerances are so tight that I have to really force the resulting prints into the base plates.
Is there some setting I can adjust in the addon to make the tolerances a bit looser?

Today in #JustCrealityThings, I took @nprofile…x2x0 's advice and did the so-called 'blanket mod' to try and get my chamber temps up a bit.
This was a runaway success: I managed 61ish C on passive heat. And then my camera turned off.
Turns out that _either_ in hardware or in firmware, the camera in the K1 Max turns off when chamber temps go above 60C, and won't turn back _on_ until they drop. Luckily, there is a mod for this, which puts _a heatsink on your camera_.
Totally normal.

#Logic Fedi: I am wondering if anyone can help me. I'm trying to implement an analytic tableau for Belnap's L4, but I'm struggling a lot. I've read the Muskens papers, but as I'm not a logician, I have no idea how to translate those ideas into an analytic tableau.
My biggest mental block is how to translate the concept of a 'closed branch' to L4. I know this is more complex (Belnap's definitions require preservation of truth _and_ falsity), but I have no clue how to even start.

@nprofile…26sn So, having printed the Orca cube, this has to be _the_ best-looking cube yet. If it were not for those droopy perimeters (needs a bit more fan on overhangs), I'd have trouble even telling that this was #FDM printed. The surface texture is slightly rough, like fine sandpaper, and looks kind of stony in this grey colour.
The measurements ended up as 29.86 on X, 29.90 on Y, and 29.86 on Z. This is exactly ABS shrinking, which I guess surprises nobody.

@nprofile…26sn To my surprise, the correct EM ended up at 0.925. Anything substantially lower would have gapping in the Ellis cube tops. This isn't at all like my experience with CF filaments, but it's possible the glass doesn't affect EM that much.
Last thing is a cube to check shrinkage, and then I'll give my final thoughts (and some pictures).

@nprofile…26sn Just ran a PA tower. This gave me a PA of 0.028. This is a touch lower than my other ABSes (which ended up around 0.03), but given that this has glass fibres in it, this difference is unsurprising.
Next, time to figure out EM. I suspect it'll have to be slightly lower than the value I ran it at, but having never worked with GF filaments before, I don't know what expect.

@nprofile…26sn Given that the extruder successfully extruded all the way up to 30 VF, I think my janky fix worked. Still going to grab a replacement though, just in case.

@nprofile…26sn OK, so the racetrack finished successfully, which means 30 VF. That's not the first time I've seen that (Paramount3D ABS got me there as well), but this is good to know.
The material looks gorgeous - hardly any visible extrusion inconsistencies anywhere. Will post some pictures of more interesting prints when I have them.
Next, we need to do PA tuning, followed by EM. Might have to do this tomorrow though, as it's getting a bit late here.

@nprofile…26sn Luckily, the trick worked, and I was able to get the extruder reassembled and remounted. I tested its extrusion, and it _seemed_ to work fine. Probably crisis averted, but I'm _still_ going to go pick up a replacement from a local vendor in case something goes sideways.
Anyway, fun story aside, let's get back to testing. First move, as ever: voluflow racetrack, 10 to 30, in steps of 1.
