If the US media is doing anything, it's downplaying such events, and Trump has telegraphed that he covets the Insurrection Act as much as he covets a Nobel Peace Prize. The younger protesting set has no direct memory of the Lunch Counter Protests that launched the Civil Rights actions of the 50s and 60s, but the advice they're getting from their elders was indeed successfully implemented back then--Never strike back, but firmly hold your ground no matter what brickbats are thrown your way. One bit of payback coming from you results in an excuse for them.
This was true back then and it remains true today.

Sorry to disappoint again, but when programming is written out in text, the text is interpreted to an assembler which requires the use of both types of brackets; using only parentheses would foul up the language interpreter's assembly and therefore the program.
Your statement about math illustrates the interpretation you made about programming. I should also add that ASCII has long since updated to Extended ASCII which is now being supplanted by Unicode. You're welcome.

I disagree with DeVos' conflation of security and politics, which is what he does when he drags "the coalition of the willing" into it. Freedom involves the ability to build coalitions including security coalitions and in that sense the coalitions are united in the sense you're trying to forward. Different peoples see different issues in different ways and insofar as all members of a union do contribute to a defense common to all of them, but some members are going to see additional matters as more serious than their far-flung brethren are likely to, but those come IN ADDITION to the common defense.
Nobody should be forced to see every situation identically; not all members are going to be equally affected by the issues that the coalitions deem vital, and you can make that distinction in a democratic republic. Demanding that there be uniformity regard for all issues is authoritarianism.

Just to put a fine point on that issue--armyworm type cutworms are what I manually remove because I don't want to kill off the Tomato Hornworm, which turns into a nocturnal pollinator, a type of Sphinx moth. It might eat tomato leaves but it poops fertilizer, and while it eats it also stimulates tomato production.

I can ball-park the era that was pre-General Motors, and nearly all the automakers that are no more, such as Tucker. Mexico was involved in U.S. auto production as early as the late 1950s going into the 1960s, and U.S. automakers had to join a conglomerate like General Motors or go extinct. Automakers like Studebaker went across the border too late in the game in the early/mid-60s and went out of business anyway.

I should add that the Studebaker factory in Mexico didn't die--Volkswagon bought it to produce the VW Beetle there until relatively recently.

You're both right, actually. Religious indignation across the board was part and parcel of Biden's fall, and that of Harris, but it wasn't confined to just the charge of Palestine genocide. It was evangelical indignation that a woman was the choice against a man for office, and it was WASP indignation that she was both a woman and non-white....and I should add that devout fundamentalist Muslims believe that women should be excluded from high office.
This was an election that united the bigots.

It's easy to go off on tangents with Star Trek. When I read this thread I was thinking "split persons, split personalities" then went looking for the classic episode with Frank Gorshin in it. Cutting trees is a very bad thing to do because when they're supplied enough moisture, that moisture is carried throughout the tree and they'll better perform as a fire barrier when they're properly vascular. The problem with trees feeding fires is that they're dried out by drought first. Everybody who has a fireplace or works with campfires KNOWS that wet wood doesn't burn.

Slight correction there, Steph--Sir Newton defined the methodology FOR EUROPE. The aforementioned enlightened Arabs were able to salvage quite a bit of the knowledge contained in the Christian-razed Alexandria Library, translated that into Arabic, and via that was able to convey those contents to Europe eventually; a substantial amount of that knowledge was copied and stored in Cordova, Spain, and a great deal of that was what passed for astronomy in ancient Greece, as well as medical knowledge which proved to be essential to surviving the plagues of the Dark Ages.

Rusty, you're quite correct about the enlightened Arabs. You just can't do science with Roman numerals--no zero. It was during the Dark Ages when Europe had to deal with Arabs, then subsequently got dragged kicking and screaming into adopting Arabic numerals and Arabic math which included the zero, which Romans didn't have.

Steph, both you and Rusty are correct because it's the Romans that combined the religions of the conquered to successfully enforce the Roman claim to divine right to rule. You'll find in scripture Persian elements from Zoroasterism in there too when you look closely enough, as Mithraism was a political response to the Persian mixture of Zoroasterism and Magism to start with, and I now direct your attention to the Gospel of Matthew, the only one that mentions "The Magi"--pagan high priests of Persia.

...which goes to my original point of what Romans always did--co-opt local religions and adapted them to the official Roman religion. One of many major cases in point is this thing called "Greco-Roman", which was actually the other 'way round in terms of who took over who: Roman-Greco. This was always the doing of the Romans since Romulus murdered Remus. Very few people know that the Romans didn't always speak Latin. They co-opted the language from a distinct tribe called Latins which co-habited what's now called Italy. That's how the Romans unified the peninsula.

That bit about "taking them to Spain" caught my eye, and sure enough--the Wiki page puts the origins of this tale right around the time when Spain was ruled by the Muslim Saracen Empire, but also when Turkyie was ruled by Turks but before those two Turk tribes (and they're Asian in origin) became known as Ottomans. The Turks learned Islam from the Saracen Arabs and it's no surprise to me that the Turks and Spaniards (Cordovans, to be more precise) indulged in the same practice of abducting Christian male children to raise in Islamic practice.

My guess would be that's more of an indigenous story than Christianity-related, though, and in the same breath I'll point out that Roman Christianity has been notorious for co-opting, then Christianizing, locally held religions, rituals and stories. Romans had been doing exactly that ever since Romulus murdered his twin brother Remus, which is how the Roman Empire got built.

I can't say I buy into that everything/nothing dichotomy because I've found that even legends and fairy tales have origins in some sort of truth somewhere, so it's far more common to have partial truths in any given story. The objective is to determine which is which. It's the Turks that give Shrek his own origin story, as it happens. "Ogre" is a variant pronunciation of "Uyghur", and it WAS a fact that Turks would kidnap Christian boys, so coming up with a story that would rightfully scare the kids was actually useful for self-preservation.

I've not run across any verifiable accounts of how St. Nick was a Moor, actually; what I do know is that he was Byzantine and he served in the Ecumenical Councils held by the Pope. Byzantines were typically Romans, after all, since Constantine moved the entire Roman Empire government out to Constantinople when the Praetorian Guard got too far into determining who was emperor....and the Pope wasn't having that move, hence the Great Schism.
Now, if verifiably ancient iconography of St. Nicholas has him painted black, then I'd say odds are that you're correct...so...next question...just how old is that iconography?

I didn't say a word about race. I simply said that there were no Turks in the area until the 13th century. Nicholas was all 4th century, as you point out. I'm very familiar with Santa, as it happens, and still a believer in the REAL Santa.
It wasn't until the 1200s that the Uyghurs beat back the Byzantines from the area, but weakened themselves, got assistance from the Seljuks. It's the Uyghurs and Seljuks together that make Turkyie Turkish.
