I'm reading Octavia Butler's "Parable of the Talents," which is the second (and final) volume of her Earthseed books.
With its "Make America Great Again" president (that's literally his slogan) forcing a Christo-Fascist agenda on the US through "re-education camps" (which are really slave-labor concentration camps) I think it's even more prescient than The Handmaid's Tale.
This description of the president is word-for-word applicable to Trump.
The book was published in 1998.

Amazon needs to be split up. There are far too many conflicts of interest going on here, and their monopoly over the audiobook market is culturally and economically disastrous.

There was a weird vertical stripe in the sky last night. I thought it might be an aurora, so I took a long exposure photograph, which can capture the colors far better than the human eye. But there was no color. It was just a weird stripe, presumably of smoke. And you can see that there is haze in the sky, with a fairly distinct boundary, beyond which, at the top right, you can see clear sky and clouds.
A hazy, smoke-filled sky, with a river of smoke running through it or above it, I presume.

For protesting genocide, Audrey White has been ordered not to enter a defined area of Liverpool. She has also been told the only place she's allowed to live is within that same area. This is a Karfkaesque move on the part of the authorities to make sure they always have a reason to arrest her.

In the Contents, the cover is described as "A Symbolism of "This Lonely Earth", by Mel Hunter."
Anyway, "This Lonely Earth" isn't a short story, but an essay by Dr Walther Riedel, attempting to calculate the odds of intelligent life in the universe. The illustration ("a symbolism" is a weird way of putting things) is, as you say, a mystery.

Last night I saved the house from burning down. My partner, who is a bit ADHD, had steamed some dumplings and afterward threw a dishtowel on the stove ring she'd been cooking on. I happened to walk into the kitchen several minutes later, exactly at the moment that the smoldering towel burst into flames. There happened to be a cardboard box on the counter right beside the stove, which was right underneath the upper cabinets, so we could have had a bad fire.

This piece on the killing of UnitedHealth CEO Brian Thompson is well worth reading. If, as seems quite possible, the killing was revenge for the hell that some family has been put through by UH under Thompson's avaricious and callous leadership, the question that arises for me is why this kind of thing doesn't happen more often.
