Apparently the term in the US for what you just defined is "classic liberalism" (which has evolved into neo-liberalism) as opposed to "social liberalism," which is left-wing,.
No one here ever uses these terms, though. "Liberalism" is never used to refer to the right wing, except maybe by political scientists.
(The part of the Democratic party that's actually left wing are called "progressives.")

All these AI companies are selling a product supposedly guaranteed to help businesses make more money, yet they're all losing massive amounts and have no route to profitability.
If ChatGPT was as powerful a business tool as OpenAI says it is, OpenAI could just ask ChatGPT how to make OpenAI profitable and all their problems would be solved.

The real AI hallucinations are not those generated by computers, since they do not have minds and do not hallucinate.
The real AI hallucination is people's belief that when they are interacting with Claude, ChatGPL, etc., they are communicating with a conscious being; people hallucinating that there is a mind inside their computer.

It's an odd thing when someone says, "Well, you're allowed your opinion," as happened this morning.
Allowed by whom? And if "they" are allowing me to have my opinions now, might they revoke permission in the future?
I sense a subtext along the lines of "You're allowed your opinion, but I wish you weren't."

Pete Hegseth, US Secretary of Defense, argues that the greatest enemy of the United States is not Russia, China, or Iran, but any elected representative who opposes Donald Trump.
“The biggest adversary we face at this point are the reckless, feckless and defeatist words of congressional Democrats and some Republicans.”
This is what fascism looks like.

Up to 777 people have been held at an Arizona ICE facility designed for 157. There are no beds, no showers. People sleep on concrete floors and have been held there for up to 18 days — that we know of.
The treatment of these people is utterly inhumane. After we take power back from the fascists there's going to have to be a reckoning.

I remember being fascinated by mirrors when I was maybe three or four. I have a very clear memory of looking into one that hung on a hallway wall, looking into it at an angle and being amazed by how much imagery was in the reflection. I wondered how so much could fit into one piece of glass. It seemed magical.

I've always been suspicious of Deepak Chopra. He's a businessman who presents himself as a spiritual teacher. A lot of what he says is quantum technobabble, designed to manipulate the unwary into thinking he has depths.
So OF COURSE he's in the Epstein files. And OF COURSE half the time he's emailing with Epstein he's repeating his mantra, "bring the girls."
May the news spread wide and far about this shyster. A fall from grace might make him a better person.

I'm fascinated by doubled words in ordinary¹ English sentences, such as:
…the company I worked for for ten years…
…I noticed that that man is tall…
…they had had their dinner…
…I do do that…
The words aren't technically duplicated since they have different functions, but it's still cool. I wonder if anyone's catalogued all the words this naturally² happens with.
1. Not sentences constructed to duplicate a word.
2. Words in quotes not allowed (…this "this" is in the wrong font… etc)

Genuine horror here: many institutions in Britain (and other parts of the world) used to provide only hard toilet paper. Imagine wiping your tender anus with tracing paper. Yes, it's unbelievable. But here's the photogaphic evidence.
#note1gcv…k2f8

2026-02-03 21:38:57 UTC

Right! Hard toilet paper!
People of a certain age from Britain (and maybe elsewhere) will remember with horror having to use toilet paper that resembled tracing paper. It was hard and crinkly, not at all absorbent, and you could literally use it for tracing.
I'm curious how many people remember the trauma of using this appalling invention.
If you did encounter it, please state the offending country in the comments.

Yes, adverbs tend to weaken writing.
The other best thing is to read your writing out loud. You pick up things that way that you miss when you're reading silently. Silent reading doesn't let you hear repetition or awkward phrasing as easily.
I try to do that when I'm writing a book, but it takes a lot of time, especially when you keep stopping to edit.
Alternatively, "hear" your writing being narrated by your favorite NPR host. That can teach you a lot.

2026-01-31 17:38:34 UTC

Every time I'm writing a book I'm grateful to Benjamin Dreyer, who suggested that every writer should try going a week without using:
* very
* rather
* really
* quite
* so
* of course
* in fact
It's astonishing to search through a draft to find these words. In almost every case a sentence is better off if you just delete them. On rare occasions they serve a purpose, but it's possible to reword in order to get rid of them. But I'd like to train myself not to use them in the first place!

I don't think these questions adequately reflect what America is. There have always been two competing tendencies There's a tendency toward democratization, and one toward (white, male, christian) oligarchy. Both those tendencies can be seen in the founders, who wanted the American people to govern themselves, but who had a very narrow view of who was fit to govern. We're seeing the oligarchic tendency very nakedly revealed in Trump, and the democratic tendency on the streets.

This infuriated him because his ideal is a fascist world where he is the man with the gun and the power, and where the rest of us are terrified.
Renee Good turned the tables. She terrified him, because his reason for existing is negated by love. So she was a fucking bitch who had to die.

Trump is planning to cancel the midterms.
“They had the worst policy. How we have to even run against these people—I won’t say cancel the election they should cancel the election, because the fake news will say, ‘He wants the elections canceled. He’s a dictator.’ They always call me a dictator. Nobody is worse than Obama. And the people that surrounded Biden.”
This is how Trump operates. First it's "I'm not going to say…" Then it's "You know, a lot of people are saying…"
Then it happens.

I haven't commented on the utterly illegal "arrest" of a head of state (repulsive and illegitimate though he is) because right now I'm just overwhelmed by how strongly I do not want to live in this kind of world — a world where rules and laws don't matter, where might makes right, and where the world is carved up into Russian, Chinese, and US spheres of influence, with all other countries being client states of the big three. That's going to lead us into a World War.

The law can be misused by authoritarians, but then it ceases to be the Rule of Law and is simply authoritarian abuse. The US government has declared war on the United States.

Dear Google News. The US government is not a news organization. By presenting their press releases as if they were news stories, you are 1) acting as propagandists, and 2) displacing actual news media from Google News.

Not surprisingly, Canadians no longer trust the United States, are happy to pay more if it means avoiding buying American products, and are reluctant to come here.
It takes a special kind of Stable Genius to destroy an international friendship so completely and so quickly.

The Trump regime's security forces zip-tied and arrested more than a dozen New York lawmakers yesterday as they insisted on their right to inspect an ICE facility that's been accused of holding prisoners in overcrowded, unsanitary conditions.
I don't see how, at this point, anyone can fail to recognize that we're living under full-blown fascism.

The GOP is planning to give the government dictatorial powers to designate any US citizen a “supporter of terrorism” (e.g. by expressing opposition to Israel’s actions in Gaza) and to revoke their citizenship. There would be no due process.

I'm reading Octavia Butler's "Parable of the Talents," which is the second (and final) volume of her Earthseed books.
With its "Make America Great Again" president (that's literally his slogan) forcing a Christo-Fascist agenda on the US through "re-education camps" (which are really slave-labor concentration camps) I think it's even more prescient than The Handmaid's Tale.
This description of the president is word-for-word applicable to Trump.
The book was published in 1998.

The fans go off when the car's electrics are turned off, and only come back on when the car is started again, so I've never seen the point of turning them off. I've also never had battery problems because of doing this.
But perhaps in some vehicles this is a problem, or perhaps some people fear it will be.
I'm curious because when I use the car I wonder why I'm suffocating, and discover that my partner has turned the air off. My ex-wife also used to do this.

It sounds like you leave the settings on the ventilation system in the on position when you switch off the car. Not everyone does that. When they stop the car, some people turn the fans to "off." even if their car has a thermostat.

Yes. I tend not to call it air conditioning because not all cars have the ability to cool the air and just have fans and a heating system.

Amazon needs to be split up. There are far too many conflicts of interest going on here, and their monopoly over the audiobook market is culturally and economically disastrous.

Bhag is Hindi for tiger/panther/leopard. Apparently Kipling made up the name Bhageera from that. Presumably this author was imitating Kipling. Incidentally, the Vedic Sanskrit for tiger is vyāghra, which is pronounced almost identically to the name of a certain little blue pill. I suspect that’s not an accident!

Thank you. Yes, it is horrible. I was summoned to an immigration office a couple of months ago (I'm a resident alien) and I spent the hour-long drive there memorizing my partner's phone number (a sign of the times that we don't know these things) in case I ended up being disappeared into a detention camp. Fortunately I just heard the other day that they're issuing a new green card. So I'm OK for now, but if they get desperate to fulfill their quotas I might be for the chop.

Please don’t joke about that! You probably don’t know, but my daughter is black and an immigrant. I live in terror that she will have her naturalization revoked and be deported. I’m in the middle of applying for a UK passport for her for that reason, and also just in case the country becomes unsafe for her. I’ll be doing the same for my son, but I can only do one application at a time.

There really is no obligation to finish a book you don’t find satisfying. You may feel a sense of obligation to finish something that you started, but it’s worth questioning that, since it can end up being self-punishing. I also don’t think that it’s a good use of the limited time you have available on this earth to stick with books that drain you. Find a book that gives you pleasure!

There's a growing trend of author impersonation. Usually it's someone claiming to be a famous author, and just wanting to say hi. Then after some nice chit-chat they'll ask about your work. And it just so happens that they know an excellent editor or publicist, whose details they're happy to share with you. The cost is very reasonable!
Usually it's done much better than this, though.
