I keep saying the US should "leave right now" but have I really thought about how this would work? Have I considered the consequences? I have.
Initially Iran will continue with their tolls. They are not the only country who charges a toll like this. They will discriminate against the US and US allies. But, over time they'll want tolls from us too.
More importantly with the US gone Iran can't attack gulf states, US bases or anything anymore.

I would like to remind you that the very important objective that has lead to all of this risk and stress was *squints at paper* "bombing civilian bridges and power plants"

I am hoping that maybe we can take this close call with a hostage situation, and success in not having one as a cue to just find a way to leave ... now.
The president has said he doesn't care if Iran is still charging tolls when we leave so... what is the hold up.

The missing pilot who ejected in Iran has been found by a US recovery team. In the course of getting this pilot back more things may have happened.
Upon landing in the ejector seat the pilot booked it for a high ridge in the crash zone, a place with good radio reception and cover. The US knew where he was fairly early.
The rescue operation was impressive.
Real "hero stuff"

Now it sounds like a member of the US Air Force is either captured or dead. (They got the other guy back at least.)
So we sent these pilots into mortal danger to blow up pretty bridges?
That is not a nuclear facility it is an urban bridge.
Like... I can't even feel mad about them shooting at the air force jets because what else is supposed to happen. Just sit and be bombed?

8 people died when the US bombed this bridge. I don't think this seems very "military" but that is just me. It looks like a pretty civilian bridge like one of my favorite bridges in Pittsburgh.
It's going to be inconvenient.
So I think this was more about destroying something new tall and modern. People seemed pretty proud of this bridge. IDK tell me about how this is part of a military objective.

This is the Karaj B1 bridge.
It was built to reduce congestion in the Karaj–Tehran corridor. It (was) the tallest bridge in a mountainous country. Afshin Avaripoor was the project manager. It was completed just 4 months ago.

IFTT wasn't a terrible idea. "turn off the lights when I'm more than 1 mile from home" isn't a bad automation. But IFTT failed, mostly because it just didn't work reliably. Coordinating the logins and apps was difficult. If you changed a password everything would break.
Why is it better to have an LLM generate IFTT task for you? I'm not just asking to be mean I really want to know.
We've done this. What did we learn from IFTT?

AI agents are programs that use your logins to do things. For example and AI agent might notice your bank balence is low due to all your polymarket gambling and sign you up for a $890 "financial literacy bootcamp" and send your spouse a text telling them to check in on you. It's the future. But hold on. We've seen this before.
Remember IFTT?
It also used your logins to do things, but you had to write the programs yourself. I used it to make my lights flash red whenever congress passed a bill.

Doing something wild like having ants be important characters AND wanting to keep the story grounded has been giving me anxiety but I also have not really articulated that tension or challenge ... instead just hoping it would work out.
I know people struggle to relate to insects, but that's part of why I'm doing this. The space ants are deeply alien. But they have goals, they have values. They make surprising choices that I hope will make the reader question if their morality is superior.

I'm is so much trouble. My book has... let's call it parallel universes. There are two versions of every character. But, there is only really one plot.
The main character is human, the secondary major characters are humans and a space ant. But also? This is supposed to be "grounded" SF, not a silly romp. More William Gibson than Terry Pratchett.

I would like to see all "men's only" sports clubs allow women in if those women want to be there and if they meet the entry conditions. After several decades of that maybe we could decide if we still need "women's sports"
Every now and then some little midwestern girl wants to play football and so she join the "boy's team" and then there are news articles worrying about it.
This keeps happening because girls are generally told flat out "no you can't do this"

Women's sport clubs were created because men didn't want women playing with them. "No Girls Allowed" but it's grown men basically. So women made their own clubs. When you have these vast sexist barriers in access, in education, in cultural expectations just learning the rules of a sport and getting practice can become difficult.
And at some point why deal with people who are rude and don't want you around when you could be doing the sport with other women?

The vast majority of people who will be impacted by trans bans in sports will be little girls with short hair or arms that are "too muscular."
It will also mean that when a woman is good at her sport the disgusting grumbling and whispering about "may she is he" gets taken more seriously.
This happened with Paula Radcliffe for running marathons too fast. If it helps you to think of a white cis woman being the victim of this.
Of course little black girls will take the brunt of this. As ever.

Among Evangelicals the need to do "foreign wars" was increasingly questioned. In an era of greater media centralization a single great speech by a president could still be blown up into a moment (and 'the gipper*' was pretty good at speeches) so the narrative was that this wonderful message sealed the deal and lay all those worries to rest.
America was good and helping everyone by "stopping communism" and Jesus agrees.

I was born around 1981 so in many ways this speech defined the international political climate of my youth. In the speech Ronald Reagan seeks win over his Christian evangelical supporters to the cause of fighting communism (in the early 80s this was feeling less and less urgent) by talking about how "stopping communism" was in line with Christian values.
But this was an era of US foreign policy that was driven more by business interests than any moral ideals.

SCPs are modern folklore. The universe and associated media are very popular. I don't think the SCP fanbase is especially interested in politics or literally analysis. SCPs gain fame (infamy?) by being creepy, by having the right mix of plausible and horrific.
This is why I find SCP-1981 especially interesting. It's a haunted VHS tape of Ronald Reagan delivering his "Evil Empire" speech to the National Association of Evangelicals.

I found the resistance to the ideas in the book... informative. But, I also keep finding that the more I study math the more their thesis seems to be true.
Even complex numbers are "embodied" --
In a way this goes back to the debate: is mathematics invented or is it discovered? The embodied answer is "it's invented, it's intrinsically human and shaped by how we think and see the world"
This can be upsetting to those who feel that math allows them some window on the objective.

Let me go on a tangent about "The Embodied Geometry" it's a little known book about mathematics and the human cognition. I read "Where Mathematics Comes From" when I was getting my masters and it had a massive impact on how I think about mathematics.
The thesis of this book is that mathematics comes from people so the way that our brains work has shaped mathematics.
The authors are very ambitious. Maybe even a little overextended.

To put it more succinctly: the way my job is structured "teaching" is thought of as something I do in a classroom with students. Maybe "teaching" is also grading papers and writing comments about how students are doing.
But teaching is also developing materials, deciding what to teach, how to teach it. Research, testing lesson ideas, refining them, tailoring the lessons to particular groups of students, or individual students.

I love it when people share photos of their ant infestation with me. It always feels like they think I might know some prominent ant in that particular colony and be able to email them or something "listen, ya'll need to get out of Tony's BBQ, he's on the verge of firing it up without letting you move out first."
Like I'm responsible for all of the ants, and I'm their ambassador or something. I mean... it's a little true. But, the ants will do what they want. They will get into everything.

There are "summer curriculum development grants" and this helps a little, but it's not always work done during the summer.
Right now I'm organizing my old worksheets and tests so they will be easier for other teachers to use. I know the department head will be pleased with this, and the other teachers will like it, but it's extra work and "not counted"
I think most jobs can look like this. And I don't have a great solution. I just wish teachers were recognized more for this kind of work.

So there is a subtile pressure to just teach the same things over and over. Because I've created all of the material, I know how it will work. In terms of time? I'm talking three times more prep to teach something new vs. teaching something old.
Of course I still take on new courses and develop new worksheets, lessons, test, tons of material. But this isn't officially part of my job, I just like teaching. I do the work for the love of the game and because it's more fun being good at your job.

As a teacher I sometimes feel like there is a mismatch between the amount of work I do and how that work is counted towards meeting my job requirements.
Like most teachers I'm expected to teach a certain number of courses. But it doesn't matter if it's a course I've taught before, or a totally new course I've developing it's all counted the same.
Designing a new course is much harder and takes much more time than teaching the same thing I taught last year to new students.

One thing I find enlightening about observing these "short cuts" as evolutionary strategies is the big ideas, the false idealism and justifications are gone. The material reasons are laid bare.
Some ants steal the young of their neighbors because producing and raising young ants takes energy and if you can get another colony to do that for you it's an advantage.
The other thing that is clear is that these strategies are locally powerful but can never dominate the game.

You can find ants doing things that have the same shape of many human crimes. Is it projection to name what these ants do with our ideas of human crimes? Perhaps.

That's a massive colony. Some of them have wings and are male or additional queens.
It seems like in the wild they live in trees, but they also do well in houses.

Yes, to be clear it seems like it was just some kind of gross error in routing the planes around the tarmac, which is overbooked and everyone knows it so ... this kind of thing happening isn't out of the realm of the expected.

The panic is a mix of the fear of the actual danger of such an attack ... but also how it would make this country even more crazy and dangerous. Then my imagination starts spiring and it's the kind of war no one wants to see.
All over nothing.
This all needs to stop. We don't need to live like this.

I do not enjoy worrying "is it terrorism" when there is an accident at the airport. This was something that I think many people in NYC would think for years after 2001, and now it feels the same again.
Anyway there was an accident on the tarmac at LaGuardia, a plane crashed into a fire truck. They canceled all the flights. I noticed because normally I hear more planes at this hour and the quiet was unsettling. When I saw a photo of a crushed plane I had a little panic attack.
