When something makes sense people can answer your good faith simple questions about it. As soon as you hit a wall of "it's complicated" become very suspicious.
"Why can't I just ask the AI to make better prompts?" isn't a bad question. For example.
"How does money come from nothing?" isn't either.

One thing I find enlightening about observing these "short cuts" as evolutionary strategies is the big ideas, the false idealism and justifications are gone. The material reasons are laid bare.
Some ants steal the young of their neighbors because producing and raising young ants takes energy and if you can get another colony to do that for you it's an advantage.
The other thing that is clear is that these strategies are locally powerful but can never dominate the game.

The panic is a mix of the fear of the actual danger of such an attack ... but also how it would make this country even more crazy and dangerous. Then my imagination starts spiring and it's the kind of war no one wants to see.

I do not enjoy worrying "is it terrorism" when there is an accident at the airport. This was something that I think many people in NYC would think for years after 2001, and now it feels the same again.
Anyway there was an accident on the tarmac at LaGuardia, a plane crashed into a fire truck. They canceled all the flights. I noticed because normally I hear more planes at this hour and the quiet was unsettling. When I saw a photo of a crushed plane I had a little panic attack.

There is this cynical and currently popular idea that everything is "virtue signaling" and to some extent it's true. Part of why people do what is right even when it won't benefit them is about making a statement to themselves and others about what we value.
But, it's also ... not that hard, not even that remarkable to really want to be a good person even when you don't personally benefit. I'd even suggest it's normal.

Nothing irritates a bully more than when someone else demonstrates the courage or honor that they lack. They will have an immediate need to prove that any such acts were either a sign that the person was duped, or that the sacrifice was motivated by a desire for public acclaim, not any principles or moral values.
To confront true selflessness is terrifying for the bully. Nothing could be more alien. Nothing more clearly calls into question their own self worth.

Bullies are often fundamentally cowardly: if their home, or their country is under attack they rank saving their own life and possessions first and above the group.
A bully will expect any group they target to crumble in a similar manner. The idea that their threats and attacks might cause people to find a common cause, that it might inspire bravery and unification is not something they can anticipate or imagine.
Because were it them? They would shove the child out of the lifeboat and run.

Also when schools gut their arts programs, when they get rid of things like shop class and PE it's really harmful. It's harmful even if all you care about is students learning "the basics" eg. how to read and write, how to understand numbers and a smattering of history. Young people can't understand those things as well when they simply have less experience in everything.

Yes! those ideas always seemed so pi in the sky to me though when I'd try to apply them to math class where there are standardized tests and check lists that must be met.
But what if it were more typical to have a teacher who works across grades like I do? I was at a little conference for HS calculus teachers recently and I was the only one who taught another subject or younger grades.
In too many schools the calculus teacher isn't ever assigned to lower grades.

When I only work with students in a context where I'm giving a grade, and that grade is "high stakes" because colleges care about math grades the students are less likely to bring their full creative potential to the subject of math. Grad grubbing happens.
But when they know me from working on a project first, where the feedback is narrative, where they help set the goals they are just more open to really learning the material, just just "getting through it"

I teach both middle school "technology" (think shop class mixed with Computer Science) and I later teach the same students in geometry and calculus in high school. This means when I first work with students there are no grades, just an opportunity to be creative and learn how to use tools and programming to make things.
This creates an amazing foundation for our work in academics later.
I wonder if it could be a model for improving math education we could expand?

They like heat and moisture, your best bet is to make that place dry and cold and they may move.
Right now they think they are so slick having found a perfect place to warm their young.

Can you unplug the brick for a bit? It's the heat that they are attracted to.
I would use the bug vacuume on this situation. Move them outside in batches while looking for the queen. Any idea where they came from?
They are excited to heat their babies so they will grow up faster and the brick is the perfect temp.

As it turns out I have video of when they first moved into the log!
Dottie passed away nearly two years ago. She was one of the first wave of workers and saw a lot of change. I might mark another ant or two this spring as it's interesting to see what they get up to... they are NOT all the same. Very different personalities.

I think they like keeping all the larvae of the same age in one place for efficiency and her log was too small. And like most queens she didn't want to move.
But I've seen this in the wild too. The larvae are a target of predators, so keeping the queen separate is probably safer in the long run.

During her first two years of life she hung around the egg chambers, but then a couple of years back her daughters decided to move all of the eggs and larvae to another log, so her log is just for her, the ants to care for her (and who whisk the eggs away) and maybe just a few dozen most recently laid eggs. She also has an extensive collection of majors hanging around especially at the entrance.
It's the queen's apartments.
She has an army of nannies for the little ones.

Yes! That happened to my Pogonomyrmex queen a year back and she started laying eggs that grew up to be sons. It was kind of sad since it meant the colony was over.
She must not have mated enough? Or maybe she got sick.
She was only two years old. Normally it takes much longer for that to happen.

Pretty good! I just started working on the parts about the venture capitalist and his nervous assistant again. They host a fundraising contest in woods and I'm very happy with that bit.
And the engineer who makes the server farm on the moon makes more sense as a person now.

It's hard for me to imagine someone who grows up in "the culture" who ends up with that depth of feeling for betrayal. I do know people who are like her, but they are like that because of how women are treated as disposable if we fall outside of certain lines.
And "un wed mother" might as well be dead, many people think. That's not natural, that is trauma.
But the book did imply that both Genar-Hofoen and Dajeil were ... rare. My conclusion was ...

I think you are on to something with the knowing other minds stuff.
However, there is something mixed in Genar-Hofoen's infidelity? betrayal? He's aware as it's happing that it might be a bad idea. A bad idea that'd inspire him nearly getting murdered? Dajeil isn't exactly innocent, but we don't get to know as much about what she's feeling. Just guilt, anger? what? I found that kind of frustrating.

He did two kinds of books: the sci-fi which is very fun and the moral complexity is buried and his "fiction" which is some of the most disturbing stuff I've ever read and he just presents you with one problem after another until you say "that's enough" or that is what I said. (yes I'm talking about "wasp factory")
So, if you like sci fi grab anything from "The Culture" series.
Although my favorite book isn't from that series, it's a sci fi called "The Algebraist."

Even if you are criticizing someone, burying their bad ideas with logic and all the knives of science you're still making them and their ideas important.

I was cleaning out the glass display aquarium from the "Ant Show" earlier this week and found that one worker had managed to hide in there all week! She's been separated from her colony for days in some ant version of #thebackrooms -- she seemed very happy to go back home and is now in a big pile with her sisters grooming them and being groomed.
She hid for days but today she was out in the open just running around in the otherwise empty aquarium ...desperate and that's how I spotted her.

ugh. sponsor block missed an ad. And I listened to the WHOLE advertisement (for a mattress?) the *I* had to add the start and end times of the add to the sponsor block list myself.

I don't want to report a user to their home server. I want to report them to a list of 100 servers that I trust who would also quickly and quietly block them limiting their reach.
And I want to be able to decide who I trust with that information. The needlessly controversial #fediblock tag was created because we don't have a tool like this.
Using public hastags to do this is obviously inferior. But users adapt to system that can't be bother to adapt to their needs.

I really wish there was a more sophisticated way to share moderation examples. Eg. individuals and servers could "trust" each other and then automatically share lists of reported domains and users *including* the offending posts and comments about context.
Right now the software offers to let your report a user to their home server and this is almost always a terrible idea since their whole server is probably terrible and it just makes more slur filled posts show up.

My grandma called them "Conniption Bugs" because when you see one you have a conniption fit as they are rather large and astonishing, but in the end harmless.
Seeing a dobsonfly is good luck because it means the fresh water streams and lakes are clean enough to support the hellgrammite who are the most cute and evil-looking larvae of any insect.

Why is he mad? Given what else I've seen in the godforsaken mess of a mashed together dialects and words that calls itself "the English Language" this is perfectly reasonable and logical.
