I think society in general works better if there is a basic safety net so people are less likely to turn to crime or live on the streets, and if the average person has some minimal level of education.
Look at New Zealand as an example - not saying it’s perfect.
College tuition is around USD$5k/yr and you can complete a Bachelors degree in 3 years - so $15k total.
About 37% of people pay around USD$2k/yr for private health insurance for the whole family (to avoid waiting lists and choose their own doctor etc…) but there’s universal healthcare for everyone.
If you’re unemployed, the govt pays each person around USD$13k/yr.
Average federal income tax rate is 17% and highest is 39%. There is no state income tax.
Property taxes are around 0.25%
So…. Taxes are somewhat comparable or maybe lower than USA (depending on the state), benefits are much more extensive, and crime (particularly violent crime) is much lower.
Not claiming NZ is perfect by any means - look at their Covid lockdowns for example. Just didn’t want to pick a heavily taxed Nordic country as an example.
My point is that if you assume govt taxes are not going away anytime soon, it is possible to use them to improve society instead of transfer them to the special interest groups of lobbyists and donors. Smaller, less wasteful, less corrupt governments around the world could deliver benefits for their citizens with a minimal tax of maybe 10%. At that point everyone could stop complaining about being over-taxed and just live their lives. Especially if the smaller govt is less intrusive and more libertarian.
I don’t know if it’s practical to reach this nirvana, but it seems theoretically possible. Perhaps with a system akin to the Ancient Greek approach of choosing senators randomly, but more inclusive to go beyond the wealthy powerful families the Greeks chose from.
