You're talking about web of trust #WoT. WoT hasn't reached its full potential yet, but plenty of good people are working on it. It would allow people (customers in this case) to make attestations about other users (vendors in this case), and those who trust these customers would see those reviews or reputation.
If you don't already trust someone, your WoT graph would care what they say about a store

You could use subjective reputation systems to establish routing preferences per node. You could introduce _some_ opt-in centralization at appropriate levels in geographic communities. You could introduce opt-in hierarchy in the same way ("I choose this gateway/router and I trust it wrt the peers it routes to").
None of these are perfect solutions, but I don't enjoy seeing people throw the baby out with the bathwater, because I do think we have an upcoming networking and connectivity emergency on our hands when State actors and/or megacorps decide to turn their malign attention towards Internet infrastructure and it would be great to start exploring mitigations early.
Do you have other solutions? I'd love to hear them.

Mesh networking uses a distributed routing approach. there is no centralized router, each node in the mesh can act as a router, forwarding data to other nodes. when I was joined up the the NYC mesh, I bought my own router and flashed it with open source firmware.
there are various approaches to routing tables and node discovery, too, including fully open and permissionless. they _can_ be closed (like for military purposes or something), but they can also be fully open as long as a node has compatible hardware.
open your mind a bit! it feels like you're very defensive about the topic...

I could argue that this is where we are now. People "know" (unconsciously, via their browser and OS settings) certain DNS resolvers that are considered global / canonical. There's nothing stopping someone from choosing some wacky resolver that points domains to wacky IP addresses.
Nothing stopping them, that is, except for the lack of user-facing settings and apps with good UX. Imagine you had a web browser that had a little drop-down next to the URL bar that let you choose between "default global DNS" and "my region's DNS" and "my social circle's DNS" and "my secret club's DNS". When you enter a domain you would (maybe) get different results depending on your DNS context... This is maybe a silly contrived example, but it would work today with just an added select box.
You could imagine integrating something like this with Nostr lists or groups or something. It's just a lack of creative experiments preventing this

If my machine and your machine can find each other peer to peer, then as long as we have each other's IPs, we can find each other's websites (without domains).
If you say "I run Google.com" to a resolver service, and I ask that resolver service to route me to google.com, I'll get you (and whatver site you serve me).
If I ask a DIFFERENT resolver service for the same domain, I might get a different website.
Non-global.
But this is fine and good. Maybe I actively want YOU to be my Google in the some particular context, so I use that resolver in that context... And when I want a different provider to be "my google" for a different context, I point to that one.
Silicon valley can provide its own resolver and everyone can call that "default/global" if they want. But the global nature of it is just window dressing. There is no global, beev

Doesn't have to be Nostr. Any kind of resolver system that takes a name or hash and returns an IP will work. This is a solveable problem. And basically _easy_ to solve if you don't require the names to be global (and I personally don't think anything should be global)

I mostly agree with the sentiment here, but to be fair, talking about improvement the *assessment* itself is not an indication that they know the *risk* to be present. They want to determine if risk is present, but the assessment of risk is inadequate (for determining risk).
It's still fucked - the fact that they aren't sure of the risk assessment capacity but are still recommending these treatments is itself a little worrisome. But it's not exactly what you're saying.

Honestly, even without encrypted DMs Ditto would be insanely useful with group chat. Read my note above this one - I would use ditto + a simple relay to run a zero-frills support chat for my company. blows IRC, Telegram, Slack, Discord, etc out of the water if you're just looking for something simple and low-barrier to entry for newcomers

I want the following set of features, what existing tools can I cobble together to achieve this (some building is acceptable):
- a relay that supports ONE single nostr group chat (that is, users who sign in should not be able to create their own chats)
- the chat is public, anyone can join and post
- a web UI that allows anyone to sign in to the chat
- same web UI should allow creating of a new Nostr keypairs for new users
- the domain that hosts the chat should include a verification service (so that certain members of the chat can't be easily spoofed by display name)
- added bonus: The relay should allow posting regular notes, but only by a whitelisted group. This way, a "news feed" could eventually be added to the web UI
Basically trying to build a simple support chat for a company. Nostr seems like a good platform for this because new user sign up is so trivially easy. The point is just to be able to get in and ask a question on the web, no app download, no complicated account creation, no IRC.
