The next-generation Tesla Roadster (unveiled around October 15, 2026), which uses SpaceX cold-gas thrusters for extreme acceleration and short-burst hover/flight.
Speed
• Acceleration (0–60 mph / 0–97 kph):
• Demonstrated as low as 0.81 seconds at the reveal event.
• Claims by configuration (from Tesla):
• Performance: under 1.6 seconds
• Thrust (with rear thrusters): under 0.9 seconds
• Rocket (full flight system): under 0.59 seconds
• Top speed: Over 230 mph (about 370 kph). Elon Musk has mentioned a longer-term target around half the speed of sound (Mach 0.5), roughly 383 mph (~616 kph).
These figures combine the electric drivetrain with thruster boost. Production is targeted for 2028.
What powers the hover/flight
It uses cold-gas thrusters (SpaceX technology, similar to attitude-control systems on Falcon 9 boosters):
• Ultra-high-pressure compressed air (or nitrogen) is stored at around 10,000 PSI in a composite overwrapped pressure vessel (COPV) tank that replaces the rear seats. Reports indicate roughly 250–260 kg of compressed air.
• About 10 nozzles around the car expel the gas through nozzles to generate thrust without combustion or flames.
• This provides:
• Extra forward thrust for the sub-1-second 0–60 runs
• Vertical lift for short hovers, flips, and controlled landings
• Stability/cornering/braking assist
It is not sustained flight—the gas supply is finite, so it is limited to brief bursts (physics estimates around 15–20 seconds of full hover, depending on mass, thrust, and exact tank size). An onboard electric compressor can recharge the tanks from the battery while driving.
There is also a multi-mode fan/suction system that generates strong downforce (enough to stick the car to surfaces, even upside-down when stationary).
Variants: Performance (road-focused with suction), Thrust (adds rear thrusters), and Rocket (invite-only, single-seat, full perimeter thrusters for flight capability).
