Long piece... I kinda tuned out a bit after the first few sections, particularly because there's a big "if" at the beginning along the lines of "IF we assume all these job replacement scenarios are correct...."
I'm much more on the Doctorow boat on this one, that "AI can't do your job, but an AI salesman can convince your boss to fire you and replace you with... an AI that can't do your job."
And as such I'm concerned about the "world historical" wealth destruction that will occur when the bottom drops out.

Well so, the knowledge has to come from somewhere... Someone still has to produce a technical spec for the device, and while the AI (really the LLM) might be good at distilling that down into summaries, I doubt it will be anytime soon as good as performing the actual work as a human being (because robots aren't advancing nearly as fast).
Some of this is an open-source thing... If your "moat" as a business is that you're going to selectively give out information to only "certain professionals", you're going to have a bad time in the 21st century. Manuals and technical specs are going to get leaked, and scraped, etc. This is the same as Music, which is why it was sort of a genius move by iTunes to create $1/track purchases.
But there's also a LOT of stuff that's just what they call "process knowledge." Stuff that's not in the manual. Stuff like "when the pump clogs you do this," or how much force to apply on a certain joint, etc etc. That's stuff that either isn't written down, or is so particular to a place/time/industry that a "generalist" AI would never learn it.

~6 months ago developers on Nostr were losing their absolute shit over this...
Now that it's becoming more "normalized" into Dev cycles, and it's being pushed out into Enterprise contexts and increasingly forced on everyday workers, its limited benefits outside of specific SW development contexts is becoming more apparent.
This just isn't the "everyday tool for everything" that it's being sold as.

I've been trying to use Proton for this....
Docs works reasonably well, although it's fairly bare-bones "markdown"-style editing.
Sheets is still a "buggy beta" pushed out into production. I've found a ton of bugs, and unfortunately rather than "Github-style" tracking it's "report it to ZenDesk support" and who knows if they fix it or not...
Proton support lurks on Reddit and does respond to comments, but obj they sure as hell aren't coming to Nostr (not sure if they have an Mastodon presence or not...)

It's interesting how "UX" has become distinguished from "UI"... UI the interface is the specific way that options are presented to users via the web page, program, app, etc.
UX is the whole thing, which for social apps would include the culture of the space, moderation policy, etc.
I've provided a lot of feedback on UI for various Nostr apps, but UX is a much more complicated subject.

* longform dot space -- (Still being developed?) black background makes editing real difficult because heading text is also rendered in dark grey, etc... better minding of color schemes?

Right, but in this case with Nostr the user would maintain their identity to be able to use it other places on the network -- as opposed to Mastodon where that identity credentials are stored on the instance, and might or might not be able to be "exportable" to another instance.
Again, perhaps technical minutiae that isn't important legally. The relay operator would still be able to stop specific npub's / IP addresses from using the relay.

Yep. Pick the location right, and you can walk, bike or take transit for most daily activities.

Found the "internet tough guy" .... I mean I genuinely support that, but if the "goal" here is to advance mainstream adoption of crypto payments, that's never going to work.
Until the US is a "failed state" in the sense that it can't credibly enforce tax reporting laws anymore, 99% of people will pay for the cup of coffee with the option that *doesn't* require them to report it to the IRS.

Yep -- took the final "ice bucket challenge" lol.
What surprised me was that a lot of the early motivation for cryptocurrency was based not just on the expected anti-State libertarianism, but also the idea of creating a monetary product that could follow you "into the Dewar" and back out....
I.e. the idea that, you get cryopreserved with a brain wallet, and that serves as motivation for whomever in the future has to revive you so they can get paid.

Halfway through the excellent book "Digital Cash" by Finn Brunton, I'm sure I'll have more to say later as a review, but one thing that struck me was just how close the nascent Cyberpunk and crypto community of the 80's -- 90's -- early 00's was with cryonicists, transhumanists, extropians, etc.
In contrast today, with "crypto" being passivated and assimiliated into "normie" finance and AI, and Bitcoin captured by the cultural and political Right, it's easy to forget the truly radical vision for humanity that birthed Bitcoin in the first place.

The Content Security Policy (CSP) prevents the evaluation of arbitrary strings as JavaScript to make it more difficult for an attacker to inject unathorized code on your site.
To solve this issue, avoid using eval(), new Function(), setTimeout([string], ...) and setInterval([string], ...) for evaluating strings.
If you absolutely must: you can enable string evaluation by adding unsafe-eval as an allowed source in a script-src directive.
⚠️ Allowing string evaluation comes at the risk of inline script injection.

Reposts are IMHO crucial especially for popular npubs to signal "this is good content" from someone less popular. For instance, I notice on Mastodon Cory Doctorow almost exclusively posts reposts.
As opposed to quotes, which creates a new thread disconnected from the original author, reposts drive traffic back to the OP, which is the intention here.

Conventional social media has all kinds of "tip jar" Zap-like functionality, and people don't go crazy 🤯 over it. Look at any Youtube or Twitch stream, users want to be seen sending $1 or whatever to their favorite creator.
We should lean into Zaps, because we're taking this behavior but supercharging it by (a) making it possible to send sub $1 amounts that legacy platforms can't and (b) allowing anyone on planet Earth to participate in a permissionless way. These two factors are HUGE.
there are a MILLION other options if you don't want public zaps. Just put out a lightning address and someone can send it directly. put out your BTC address, plenty of people still do that. Recurring subscription payments via Patreon-like functions, I'm sure somebody is working on that.

Yes... this goes to the heart of how a social network creates economic value.
X knows *exactly* how much money everyone is making. They keep that private, until the inevitable day they get hacked. Creators know how much they're making, but they might or might not say.
There is a value *to Nostr* by having both the total value of Zaps, as well as the zaps going to individual creators, be public knowledge: this is a signal of the entire network's worth in real monetary terms. This, in turn, will attract more users.
Are famously cranky Nostr users willing to sacrifice a bit of privacy for the greater good? 😅

Same thing in early days of Bitcoin.
I remember when people were like "guys this is NEVER going to take off unless people can send Bitcoin to an email", etc, that kind of thing.
Super-angry fights about minutae, "this ONE technical thing is what's going to save us all," "NOOO you're going to kill the protocol," etc.
These are all healthy fights to have, and appropriately low-stakes. Nothing matters until we get to 100K DAU's. Then the real decisions get made.

Yes, they compete -- but it's also the only platform that we can actually interoperate with, unlike XMeta. Once they can see the superior monetization model it'll be inevitable they come here. In the meantime, we get their content and 500k DAU's "for free."
Yeah, bridges are meant to be temporary. They should work until they're not needed anymore.

"Social media cannot survive without advertising revenue" and yet Mastodon has at least 10x the user base of here. And WE have Zaps.

Yes, AND -- Zaps are the superpower. Once this scales, zaps will disrupt every other social media.
It will be a no-brainer once your post can reach 10k, 100k, 1M people -- and whatever ~0.2% of those can zap you 10's of satoshis -- *everyone* will come here.
What's the magic number? IDK, but probably at least a few 100K DAU's -- I.e. Mastodon scale. We get there, and it becomes unstoppable.

Boo. The whole point is Zaps are supposed to replace that.
The thing is, once Nostr gets to a certain size, Zaps will cause it to be self-reinforcing. XMeta can't duplicate this model.
But it's a pure numbers game until then. Creators only need ~1% of people to pay for content, once numbers get to ~5 or 6 figures. If we even had Mastodon numbers it would be self-reinforcing.

The tidbit here about 2023-24 Nostr vs 2025-26 is very interesting. I have a theory that this drop off was due to people who perceived that, now that Trump was in office, they no longer felt threatened by censorship on XMeta.
It's the old "Exit, Voice and Loyalty" construct: Social media is all "voice", and you don't "exit" unless you feel that your voice is threatened.
Never mind that Catturd has 10x the engagement of NYTimes on X... Heck, this is seen as a "feature", not a bug.
Suffice to say my opinion -- Nostr doesn't need those users.

I mean obviously there are a lot of "chicken and egg" issues, and I'm loathe to say "oh no the apps are all 'good enough' " --- but people are staying on XMeta not because those UX's are good. In fact, in many instances, they're crap UX. And the users know it.
Ditto is already a way better app than Instagram... cleaner UI, more responsive, easier to navigate, etc.
They're staying there because of network effects.

It's interesting to hear your narrative... I came to Nostr in 2025, never having used microblogging before. Like any small new internet thing, Nostr is culturally dominated by SW Developer voices. And SW Devs look at problems as nails to solve with their "SW" hammers. So the solution is, "what haven't we built yet"?
But that's not the problem, and I think your narrative points out why. 2023-24 was pre-Trump. The people who were engaging with Nostr at the time were doing so when they thought that they were all going to get censored off the internet.
Well, now enter 2025, and Elon's tripping balls on the Dais behind Trump's coronation. "DADDY'S HOME FOLKS, BACK TO X!!"
The people who left throughout 2025 did so because *they don't see a problem* with the current system now that Trump's in the WH and Elon's running X. They don't see the problem with the fact that Catturd gets an algorithmic boost over the NY Times.
The system we *need* to be making inroads with is Mastodon, because that's actually the only decentralized social media that has gained anything resembling traction. But the bridges are defective, poorly maintained, and generally shunned because of the political culture there.

Personally what I think, like Bitcoin was once you get to about ~2014-15, we have apps that are "good enough."
You want "normie Nostr"? Look at what Ditto is doing. Look at DiVine.
If we want Nostr to grow, this isn't a "coding" problem, it's a social problem. Why are people comfortable on X / Facebook? Is it that they're *uncomfortable* on Nostr, or they're *too comfortable* on X?

The urbanist in me wants to object to the characterization of American cities but I'll let "by and large" do the work there.... New York and Chicago are some of the greatest cities in the world....
But the point is taken that the USA doesn't "city" like Europe and Asia.
