Well that's a bit pessimistic... Occupying as you do a central position in the Nostr network, in the "Web of trust" sense, would clearly offer the potential for some kind of profit if Nostr takes off, wouldn't it? At least in terms of Zaps, and/or the ability to advertise one's own "projects for hire"...
Of course nothing's going to be comparable to actually owning the token that powers the network as in the case of BTC, but there are at least some benefits to being at the center of a social network when crowds shows up... Especially one with built-in monetization.

GM... I like the NYT crosswords, but man, sometimes the "NYT-ness" of the clue choices really shines through...
Case in point, there's a single block of clues where it's two separate musical theater references, a modern jazz singer with a non-English name, and an obscure spelling of an aspect of Judaism.

One thing I do like is that you list the NIP's supported!
IDK if you're aiming for "the everything client" or "easy for new users", that helps to determine what the design direction should be... for the former though, a few things I'd suggest at the outset would be "composable feeds" like Coracle that can use follow lists, hashtag lists, etc.... And make sure there's support for banned keywords, "hell thread" protection, "too many hashtags" protection, basic anti-spam stuff etc...

FYI "custom feeds" doesn't work, I try to select "friends of friends" and hashtag-bitcoin but I think it just shows "friends of friends" without any keyword filtering.

Yeah I struggled a bit with this because the "genetic fallacy" argument you mention.
While TRUMP coin, memecoins, stable coins, and a whole lot of stuff that gets lumped into "crypto" these days are outright scams, I'm not at all confident that the regulations Diehl proposes wouldn't also have a "blast radius" that would severely impact Bitcoin and its everyday holders.
The *one* thing I wanted from this admin was sensible de minimus rules for "cup of coffee" BTC spending. Instead we seem to be getting regulatory sanction for the "scamocracy."
When the Warrenites come sweeping back into power in DC, Bitcoin is absolutely going to be collateral damage.

Yeah the BTC would have to be spent only within the very small subset of people who, for whatever reason, don't care about its source / aren't legally required to check.
I mean it's a hard bootstrapping problem... First you need vendors who accept BTC, then you need vendors who accept BTC *without* KYC... But the potential is massive, it opens up global commerce to billions of humans who were previously shut out.

TBH getting a little "black-pilled" on BTC for international commerce, at least until it becomes the global monetary standard... Sure, you can fundraise from a global audience, put content on Nostr and get Zaps, sell services internationally...
But what happens when you've got to turn around and liquidate those proceeds to pay for food, rent, etc? Coinbase says "whoops those Zaps aren't KYC/AML/OFAC/whatever... No $'s for you!"
So basically, sure you can accept Bitcoin for payment -- but only from people who are "whitelisted" by the global financial system, and therefore could just as easily pay you in Dollars.... 😑

The earliest adopters of BTC would probably have described what they were doing as "playing" with the tech, but it obviously became an investment (not only in value but in time, community trust, etc) over time.

Honestly I think this kind of "small community" feel will be preserved as Nostr grows, as long as people pay attention to and curate their follow lists... Plus web of trust tools.
Like Mastodon, Nostr will likely remain a "reverse-chrinological feed" default for the foreseeable future, unlike XMeta which is "algorithmic feed" default.

I remember back in the day the "altcoins" of the 2010's, that were just straight-up Bitcoin forks... I think it stems from a lack of understanding of what Bitcoin is and what makes it important, that people go, like with abstract art, "pff my kid can do that", and proceed to type CTRL-C / CTRL-V on Bitcoin's source code and call it "KanyeCoin" or whatever.

This isn't necessarily as bad as one might think....
Sports are real, finite, enterprises. Only a set number of people can play and win. It can't be inflated, and while the rules might change from time to time, it's generally a slow and deliberative process.
Like a system that predictably puts out 3.125 Bitcoin every 10 minutes, and will only ever generate 21 million, sports is a "reality anchor" in uncertain times.

Well FWIW Austrian theory would disagree...
While it might reduce some investment, one could argue that the investments that are being made with a Fiat monetary policy will inherently lead to booms and busts due to malinvestments.
The other side of the "coin" is that it would enhance living standards, as savings become more valuable. People are still going to spend on consumption goods, charity, etc...

And yes, decentralization / centralization is a balance... Economies of scale are real and not everything should be completely atomized.
