Stanford tested AI against 16 law professors from 14 US law schools in 3,000 blind matchups on contract law questions the professors had written. The researchers chose contract law because they believed the human judgment would win. It didn't. AI won 75% of the time, three times less likely to be flagged as harmful.
Layman test for any AI story. If AI gets better, does your business get better? For senior partners, yes, same fees, faster output. For junior associates, no. The AI replaces the bottom of the pyramid first. Kill the juniors, kill the training pipeline for the next generation of judgment.
For licensed professions, ask the harder question. The licence exists because someone has to be held accountable when the work goes wrong. The license holder becomes the bridge between AI and regulatory frame, AI does the work, the firm collects. The structure is not "AI replaces the lawyer." The structure is "AI replaces everything except the licence."
Apply the test to your own profession. If the next model is 10x better, does the business get better, or does the training pipeline get worse? And if a licence is involved, can a human license holder be held accountability for work the AI actually did?
