I would prefer that over the click bait stuff I get served by default. In trying to avoid tracking me, Firefox surfaces like such irrelevant stuff because I think it's trying to be as broad as possible. Too broad. I think I'd rather just tell you I like tech and call it a day lol

I think that I would be ok with Firefox selling targeted ads to users who choose what kinds of topics they are interested in when prompted by Firefox.
You could have two options: take a survey that will be used to show you relevant info and ads, or turn all of that off.
If you want to turn it off and harden Firefox, you can
If you don't, now you are opting into a way for Firefox to generate revenue off of information that you explicitly gave them. No guessing about how that info was obtained.

Having another option like Linux was not inevitable. Not only do we have an escape hatch - it's one example of how we as society could do tech in the future.

I still think high tech stuff has been a net positive on the world, and I'm not going to let authoritarianism and surveillance capitalism have the last word. I think we will turn around and fix all this stuff. More and more people are getting wise about how they use technology and how they think it should be used.

In some areas I definitely don't think that people should have to do asuch work as they do today to feel better, like having to take crazy steps to avoid Instagram for example. It's Instagram that should be less addictive, not you who should have to consider a flip phone because of how they get you.

I am seeing lots of digital minimalism people come to the conclusion that 'it turns out it was that damn phone that caused all those problems.'
I don't want to disparage that conclusion, but I honestly think it is a stepping stone to the true end of the digital minimalism journey which is that 'technology should work for you, you should not work for technology.'
When you take control of your tech, you get the best of both worlds. You expand your world. You contribute to a better world.

Idk if @nprofile…ppv5 has always been talking about legal issues on their socials, especially those that include a call to action for citizens, but I think it's a super smart thing for them to do from a marketing standpoint. The value of following their accounts is higher now because I know they will inform me rather than just tell me about a feature. Not that there's anything wrong with talking features, but they're expanding the value they provide through their socials specifically.

Look, I know WhatsApp has problems, but I feel like they don't get enough credit for bringing E2EE to 3 billion people. It could have been a messenger like Telegram that swept the world. Encryption was not inevitable, and yet thanks to a secure default protocol and a good user experience, BILLIONS around the world have at least some protection for their speech and information no matter what.

With other Android manufacturers looking to copy Liquid Glass, I'm glad Google stuck with their own unique, functional, and in my opinion fun version of Android. Now they'll stand out even more!
Based on what I've heard about Liquid Glass from regular iPhone users, it has not been a hit. Wrong horse to bet on.

Between Samsung DeX, Google's desktop mode for Android and consolidation with ChromeOS, and Huawei's HarmonyOS being developed with desktops in mind, I think the future looks one OS being used everywhere. Seems interesting but I also don't know what downsides come with that.

It's incredible how often I check Mastodon and I actually walk away with something of value. Not a small neat thing I liked, but a substantial article or website that expanded my mind or shared valuable information. And there's the pleasant small tall along the way! Mastodon has its moments, but I think I would miss it if it were to go away for some reason.

It's like the speed run to the mindset that totally submits to spying and censorship. But as you said many times it's because of the lack of understanding of the technology or the fact that they are not feeling the impacts today.

The more I think about it, the more I think that podcasts might be the emotional substitute for YouTube when push comes to shove. Or at least it's one of the options.
Obviously the format is different, but there is tons of overlap and it covers the same job that I look to YouTube to solve.
But podcasts are already decentralized and based on a protocol, whereas solving that problem for video is one that only a few are willing to try.

Pros and cons of Bluesky.
Pro: lots more of the people I want to follow are there, like creators and companies
Cons: it feels too potent. Like, Plutonium has lots of radiation, and a banana apparently also has radiation but a very small amount. If we think of radiation as pessimistic, negative vibes about the world, I feel like Bluesky hits me with higher doses of bad vibes than Mastodon. Like, the temptation to doom scroll is *right there*

@nprofile…qtrv I wish it would change or that folks would change their expectations. I would happily pay like $10-15 for a good game on mobile, especially since emulation is perfectly capable. In fact that's what I did for Balatro and Started Valley!
Even if it's a retail price with some gacha afterwards, to where you can relieve pressure from going full gambling mode because folks are paying an initial cost, would be fine. Idk

Super interesting video on the evolution of gacha games like Genshin Impact and ZZZ. It's such a shame that these companies have pushed what's possible for mobile gaming so far, and yet it's attached to a gambling adjacent business model with all of the downsides of gambling.

Achieving digital privacy is a spectrum, and that applies to advertising as well. An ad on the side of a bus respects your privacy more than an ad on Facebook. We're not used to thinking about the idea of digital ads being more privacy respecting because the default strat is the Meta and Google playbook, but I think that's potentially a segment we have not looked at enough.

It's a little disappointing when I see people complain about new browsers like "oh, are you just another Chrome?" I thought more people understood that making a browser engine is hard.
It's not Chrome, then it's probably Firefox under the hood. Like, that's just where we're at right now.

I think about this video a lot. It asks the question, "what do we think the future will be like based on the popular artistic depictions we have of it?"
At the time I agreed with Mirror's Edge as being a great window into the hearts of people 8 years ago. From what I've heard lol
But in general I will take a gamble and say that cyberpunk as retaken the throne for what we think the future will be like, with some clamoring for it and some fearing it.

I've been trying to make sure that I am not a blocker for anyone else trying to do something in the Fedora Marketing Team. This is kind of the next step in that process so that folks know where I am and how to work around me as needed. No one who wants to contribute to marketing or has a need for marketing should feel blocked because of me or any processes I backed.

Where am I now? Basically trying to find a new rhythm. I can't spend hours on Fedora every evening like I used to. I can't make it to meetings. I've even struggled to make it to the Fedora Social Hour, which has been such an important part of my connection to the open source community. But I can find a way.
So far I haven't landed on the schedule or workflow that would see me get involved in a way that I'm happy with, but I am trying. Thankfully the Mastodon hasn't gone completely dark.

I've been struggling to get back into my regular cadence of contributing to Fedora since August of last year. Life has just taken me for a whirl and it hasn't slowed down.
I've tried to see how I can pivot. That meant dropping a few things, which included the management of the @nprofile…le4r account and trying to help with the Fedora Podcast. I've tried to retain my most important contributions, which is being a point of contact for OEMs and doing social media

Trying to adjust how I use social media to be more informed. Right now I'm using Bluesky for news but it has a time limit on it of 20 minutes. The Mastodon access as a safe place and pressure valve where I can still connect with people and keep more content filtered out.
Part of me wants to pick one platform or the other, but maybe this way I stick to both.

What is the current status of that? Are they still a lot worse for privacy minded people than a Google Pixel?
Asking because I am being severely tempted to trade in my Pixel 8 for an S24 because the first party features and customization look incredible.
I want to check my assumptions.

I hate it because it's adjacent to what has already happened with digital privacy. The idea that you can have a computer that doesn't spy on you, that a computer doesn't actually need to spy on you in order to function, is bizarre to many people. As a result of people buying into that assumption, the only way to get a computer to not spy on you is to *install a new operating system* or do some potentially hacky thing that the average person would never consider doing.

Part of what annoys me about IoT and getting more things to have internet connections is that it normalizes the idea that these devices can only work with an internet connection. In 15 years, the idea that a thermostat could work without internet may seem weird because over time consumers will buy into an assumption that was never true. And they will stop asking for alternatives that don't need Internet until those options become niche.

@npub1krf…aelr you should add a feature to select a custom folder and then set times in the day of when to transition to the next wallpaper. Would be great to have a different vibe for your desktop at different times in the day that isn't tied to a simple day/night cycle.

For as much as I see the positives of Threads federating, I can't ignore the argument that we're signing up for short-term gain and long-term pain. It just seems like a years-long plan to vacuum up enough Fediverse users to leave it an undesirable ghost town.

I am an ignorant person, but it kind of feels like OpenAI wants to shed its attempt at being a responsible company because it chaffed with their growing business. I can do some digging when I get the chance, but if you know of a list or some way to see all or some of Dell hardware that supports RHEL, marketing can work on adding those to our Fedora compatible devices list under Fedora friendly. Could be cool to nudge them in the direction of supporting Fedora itself.

@npub1enz…479v agreed, I've moved all to WhatsApp as well. Not ideal, but at least it's E2EE and that's a strong improvement from using solely SMS a couple of years ago. You take then wins you can get!
