I hate that "algorithm" was stolen by pop culture from math and computer people to mean something different without anyone realizing it.
But I'll admit they are gesturing toward something. They sometimes mean "recommendation engine". They sometimes mean "spam filter". Basically anything machine learning related. There's an overarching theme to how it affects us.
I could live with them coining "algo" as a slang term.

Some people in my circles do certain privacy mitigations that I deem "beyond my level", like sticking to cash or privacy preserving credit cards.
And then I see my recent Whole Foods purchase in my Amazon order history.

Okay I got your point now.
So one thing that PayPal and cryptocurrency have over the legacy financial system is that you're not constantly sharing your secrets. "Here's your credit card number. Don't share it with anyone other than *every single merchant you ever interact with*".
If ACH had a username/password system instead of having to share your bank account number to send and receive, we'd go a long way toward your idea.

Yeah actually-existing crypto is often using Coinbase like a bank sadly.
It sounds like what you want is something like ACH? I think that's kind of like email for money. Some apps might let you do it. I feel like I heard that it's easier in some other countries.
I think a lot of the lack of direct control comes from fraud prevention (which, granted, is a downside of cryptocurrency today). If it's truly "open" and "in our control" we can't have banks prevent fraud for us like they do.

Re Community Notes: On X it requires more than voting. X has a ideological profile on users. Notes need a high rating across the political spectrum to show up.
For the fedi: it could be interesting if there were self-appointed fact checking accounts that readers could *opt in* to (I'd personally opt-in to fact checkers across the spectrum). And maybe readers flag posts as "please fact check this". I wonder if it could even be an overlay system without Mastodon's help or even approval.

Mark seems a lot more level headed than Elon. Maybe Facebook will actually become the free speech platform.
It's concerning that they have to bend over for any president. Trump will probably be better here but I understand some people being worried about his influence too. And what about the next president?
Moving trust and safety from California to Texas will please some people but concern others. Is there no a purple state with a Meta office?

If you could have it be the platform where the musicians are actually paid, you could have "trending" artists based on activity there. That's less corruptible. (Arguably LBRY/Odysee is/was something like that) But that requires fixing the music gift economy problem.

The only type of database that is immune to being fucked with that I can think of is a blockchain. The hardesr problem is that you'd need a way to limit one person to a vote. I think you'd need an ID system of some sort. But maybe there's some other clever system.
You could have people pay some crypto coin to "vote". It's obviously corruptible but it has the benefit of limiting votes, and also distinguishing "liking" from "really liking".

Like I figured that Gab (when it federated on ActivityPub) and Mastodon solved Twitter's "Free Speech" / "Safe Space" dilemma. They were never connected to each other but some servers connected to both. Instead of complaining to (at the time) Jack Dorsey, you could join the network through the portal that fit your preference. Someone on Gab couldn't access anyone on Mastodon dot social but if you're a Gab user those people would likely block you anyway.

I think the primary culture in the network (mastodon dot social, not liberal city) are people who don't want to be censored on certain things, but want a restrictive content policy on other things. They want to spread far and wide with other servers with similar content policies.
Those of us in this thread prefer the same, but with a less restrictive content policy.
I think the point of federation is a global network where you get to pick a content policy.

What would happen if you joined Liberal City and duked it out with people, not on Mastodon dot Social, who don't mind it? You wouldn't get banned from Mastodon dot Social if you didn't bother anyone on that server, right?
I agree that you should be able to fight with others who want to fight, but if people want to insulate themselves I personally think it's fair to do (even if I might try to convince them to open up a bit).

Computer companies have been greedflating this whole time, but over the years they have less and less of an "excuse" (this seems to be the operative word) to gouge us so they're forced to lower their prices. I think that follows their logic. Where the excuse would come from in this case, I'd still need to work out.

I interpret AP here as saying "[China] denied these claims, saying that they are lies"
As I read it now, the text of the article says "refuted the claims *as* lies" (emphasis mine). AP is not themselves calling them lies. And looking up "refute" in MW, while the first definition is disproving, the second definition is denying.
In general, pro-China is not a bias I'd expect from a mainstream western news source.

People complain about the existence of genres. "If it's good music it's good music! You don't need to categorize everything, man."
I'll give their point credit that genres can close people off from appreciating something that doesn't fit what they expect.
But I still think they're missing a value in genres. Musicians and fans sometimes find a new wavelength. They give it a name because there's something specific they like about it. They want more of it and they don't want it adulterated.
