People complain about the existence of genres. "If it's good music it's good music! You don't need to categorize everything, man."
I'll give their point credit that genres can close people off from appreciating something that doesn't fit what they expect.
But I still think they're missing a value in genres. Musicians and fans sometimes find a new wavelength. They give it a name because there's something specific they like about it. They want more of it and they don't want it adulterated.
