Like I figured that Gab (when it federated on ActivityPub) and Mastodon solved Twitter's "Free Speech" / "Safe Space" dilemma. They were never connected to each other but some servers connected to both. Instead of complaining to (at the time) Jack Dorsey, you could join the network through the portal that fit your preference. Someone on Gab couldn't access anyone on Mastodon dot social but if you're a Gab user those people would likely block you anyway.
