on the Atari 130xe there's an extra 64 KiB of extended RAM which is accessible through a bank-switched window is low RAM
I straight-up dump every other entry of a 8-bit multiplication lookup table into the extended 64 KiB of RAM
so it's a table lookup masking off the 1s bit, then an addition if a bit was masked :)
it's a little faster, but at the cost of 50% of total system RAM :D
definitely at the extreme end of the memory-speed tradeoff

i gotta start that 6502 multiplier explainer video soon
will schedule some time this week to start on the code extracts & prep demos i can record
then make some pretty graphics explaining:
* the mandelbrot iteration ops
* the multiplications involved
* how a shift-and-add multiplier works and how slow it is
* how the table-of-squares multiplier i found on everything2 works and how it's much faster
* how you can replace some of the multiplies with straight-up squares tables, gaining a chunk more speed
* how the brute-force table-lookup multiplier works how it's faster yet

But no rush. This isn't personal data that's irreplaceable; I can re-rip the data from the discs if the NAS explodes, and if the whole apartment burns down I can replace the discs with insurance money. Hopefully. ;)

*ugh* placed a big order for hard drives, which is painful but half was due anyway:
* 4-bay expansion for the NAS
* 4x 16TB drives for the new dedicated media library array
* that frees up the 2x 16TB hot spare drives I used to make the temporary array to be spares again, to be available for both primary and media library arrays
Thus I'll be able to survive two separate single-drive failure events without further purchases. Should be good insurance!

complete!
Movies:
* SD - 125 hours / 330 GB
* HD - 97 hours / 1043 GB
* 4K - 52 hours / 1740 GB
Shows:
* SD - 409 hours / 990 GB
* HD - 558 hours / 6007 GB
* 4K - 8 hours / 244 GB
Total: ~10 TB
Leaving 4K as-is and recompressing SD and HD to AV1 at crf 20 should yield approximately 5 TB savings.
Or, I can double the capacity by spending my hard-earned cash instead of my time dealing with compression.
We'll decide later. ;)

the jellyfin server is my 2009 dual-Xeon workstation with a more recent Radeon 6600 GPU, a USB 3.x interface with the 2.5 Gbps ethernet, and an NVMe drive for local storage
Ultra HD rips are up to 100 Mbps and the data comes in over the network from the NAS, gets transcoded via the GPU, and either sent back out over the network to computer 2 or played/decoded locally on the same computer; neither seems to change the results.

2026-03-11 15:46:19 UTC

Hmm, while pulling 4K HEVC rips directly off the server for playback works fine (eg in Infuse), the transcoding pipeline for Jellyfin in the browser seems to slow things down
playback info reports a transcode speed of a mere 15fps on 24fps 4K Ultra HD movies and shows; it plays for a few seconds then pauses briefly before continuing ;_;
tone mapping on/off doesn't make a diff to performance, nor does h.264 vs hevc
doesn't seem to be overloading the cpu or network

i've also noticed that blu-rays are much heavier in the audio bitrates -- they often include one or more lossless tracks, as well as often multiple languages and/or commentary tracks
the video bitrate on hd blu-ray is usually something like 22-25 Mbps
vs about 5 Mbps for DVD
but DVD is shitty MPEG-2 and HD Blu-ray is usually H.264 or at least VC-1, both of which are much better compressors than MPEG-2
so they're better quality too - ~5:1 would be the ratio you'd expect for the pixel scale up

2026-03-09 05:33:43 UTC

- reply

you can see those brutal bitrate ratios in action
for shows, about the same total amount of material in standard def DVDs and HD blu-rays ... with over four times the average bitrate, and thus file size
4k shows are going to be double the bitrate of HD shows, but at least the 4K shows are recent and usually have less than 10 episodes per season ;)

on my Atari I've been using a Sega Genesis gamepad -- they have a compatible plug!
the d-pad maps to the 8 digital joystick directions
and the 'b' button maps to the single Atari trigger
imho it's a way better experience than either the original Atari sticks or the Wico one I had when I was a kid

This 4k blu-ray + hd blu-ray pack of the first three matrix films has an interesting variant on divvying up the stuff between discs
they ship *three* discs per film!
* one 4K disc with just the movie
* one HD disc with just the movie
* one HD disc with just the special features
in the first movie, the HD disc is VC-1 while the UHD disc is the expected HEVC
extras are mostly SD MPEG-2, probably off an old DVD ;)

hm, having some buffering slowdowns. lan looks ok; could just be that the nas is loaded right now cause i'm running a backup sync, but that's hitting the _other_ hard drives

The Stuff (1985) in 4K Ultra HD!
(I actually switched my AppleTV into 4K mode for this, normally I run it in 1080p cause of a compatibility issue with the on-screen display of my stereo receiver. but you don't care about that! you care about the silly movie)

get on fleeb, bro. it's way more secure than plorbo. you won't believe how you can replace your entire communication network with flubmaxxor; it hardly ever scans your face or genitals!

found the secret to selecting which version of a title to play back in the Infuse front-end on Apple TV:
*long-press* the play/resume button on the title screen
then pick 'Select version' from there

The Stuff (1985) - Theatrical release Ultra HD disc has three audio tracks:
* stereo 24-bit PCM
* 2x stereo ac3 (commentary)
Apparently you can straight up ship uncompressed PCM audio on Blu-ray and everybody considers this a fine use of bitrate. :) :P

and for some reason the HD Blu-ray of Babylon 5: The Road Home (2023) has a second copy of the film, with only a video track (no subtitles or audio)... at a higher bitrate than the main copy
