I can't speak for the rest of the Western world because each country has its own unique issues, but America's been headed down this path since about late 2015. I find the way most people get music these days to be atrocious. Using YouTube videos, cracked versions of apps, and doing anything to get around paying for it. I have Premium as a discovery service, and then I buy tracks I want and compile them into m3u playlists by hand. Doing this allows me to get FLACs and WAVs, uncompressed, which are higher quality than streaming. The bass hits so much harder when you own the uncompressed track and a Subsonic-style streaming server.

So I find out about all this because my neighbor, who had no idea about the situation with my dad, invited me to a VCF-style showcase of small pet projects people in the area had. Think like homelabs and stuff. People brought their machines out to this dude's huge ass flat and took notes. Just had a seriously wild dream. I was living in a highrise on Christmas Day, and my dad was trying to weasel his way back into my life. So what's he do? He opens my fucking mail and tries to pay some bills for me. Come to find out that he paid a scammer claiming to be my landlord's plumber a good chunk of change (current landlord does plumbing and electrical in-house). I couldn't tell which to be more pissed about, whether he opened my mail or the AUDACITY to pretend to be my landlord. (1)

No, they don't. There's a lot of shitposting in there about Germany and being more diverse and inclusive than DEI ("more diverse inits than straight white systemd") but they're obviously japing. The people being serious say the project doesn't care about politics and just wants to provide a decent fork of Arch that respects users freedom of choice in what init they use.

Yeah, I look at the amount of content I have in my 12TB Reds and can't believe I haven't gone through more space than I have. I host my music collection on there going all the way back to my iTunes days when I got my first account separate from my parents in 2009. The whole thing I a project I'm proud of, didn't have to use something like FreeNAS because I have what it takes to pull it off.

I haven't used snapshots, but I will say I think a lot of people tried it when it was still under heavy development, and they got burned by it then. Same sentiment I hear from older folks about Linux. They tried RedHat once back in 1999 and base their opinion off of that in 2025. Just ignorant to the times.

The bays on each side are DAS's. The reason I chose these is that they can be daisychained, two more on each side. The drives show up as a single unit for each one, so I'm not likely to run out of storage options anytime soon.

At the initial start I wanted a Starttech rack mount, but my apartment is too small and my circuit breakers are Federal Pacific Stab,-Lok, I don't trust this unit not to go up in flames with bigger glorious projects, although I could pull it off given the proper resources to do so.

I know a bunch of guys in their 50's and 60's who run a lug over matrix that get mad when I shit on Plex because they spent money on lifetime licenses, they got swallowed by sunk cost, what a strange hill to die on. I have moral qualms about paying someone else to use server hardware that I own. When I was in middle school in the early 2010's I was introduced to the Affero clause, and that has had a knock-on effect to how I view software selection for projects like this nearing 30.

I would say the people running the project have been arrogant as of late, but unfortunately that's unrelated to the software itself. When I bring this up to people all I get is the usual "older hardware" argument.
My main reason for switching distros was that the Arc A750 I have for AV1 transcoding had drivers in testing but ZFS at the time required stable. Debian was too much of a mess for me to deal with. NFS being fixed was a happy accident that was a result from all the above.

Sounds like soon, Valve seems to be prepping us for a bright future on the Linux side. I switched full time to Ubuntu in March 2015 and never looked back, and gaming was barely a fraction of what's possible today. Imo for normies it's never been a better time to switch.

Oh the context of my OP above is on Android. I use Arch on my laptop and server. It wouldn't surprise me if Flathub had a gtk version of it. Otherwise you can probably use it as a PWA. On Android it tries to force you to use Chrome, my solution was to save the website via Brave and delete the native Android app.
