I should have asked this before, but does your library institute fines for overdue books? And do you think eliminating that system, as many libraries have done, is a good thing and encourages a wider group of folks to read, or is it a bad thing, if say, you were waiting a long time for your turn to read something new?
We have fines at one of the library systems I use. You can sometimes get around the automatic return of an e-book by reading offline. I have only done that once, though.
The library sysyem with fines: 20 cents per day, with a maximum fine of $10.00 if it is returned within 90 days. After 90 days, the patron is charged the ten bucks *plus* the replacement cost of the book. (Some are irreplaceable and they've lost some books this way.) Damage fees vary. I've spilled something before on a book, which fortunately only hit the margins. They charged me a few bucks for that.
Fulton County Library is "fine-free" unless the book is lost or destroyed.

So, verdict is: complicated.
The Good News:
I had forgotten that I replaced the old water heater in 2016. So, it's newer than I thought. He says I can wait a bit to replace it, sometime after the guys replace 75 ft of old clay drain pipe in the yard, project sked for June.
The Bad News:
No one uses 5/8ths copper anymore. Need to switch to 1/2 inch current plumbing standard.
Space is tight. No room for any softener system or anything besides a short tank.
Pipes under the house in the crawl space are old and lack a water pressure regulator, required by code. Some of the PVC is from 1967, when it was blue.
Of course this will be a complicated process.
I would say don't buy an old house, but this is generally what you're gonna get on a VA loan. Plus, every house is out of date eventually and has to meet new code.

Y'all are giving me lots of helpful advice. The guy who will inspect the water heater will be here soon. I think I want to continue with the gas tank-style water heater. I will ask about how much sooner a water softening option would reduce the life of the water heater, should I choose to go that route. When you've had hard water for ages, softened water sounds so nice. I have a friend with a saline-infused pool, and the water is glorious. Salt does degrade whatever it's in, however.

I'm getting my water heater inspected today. It's 18 years old, and we have ridiculously hard water, so I think it's pushing it to keep it this long. When do you all replace a water heater? 10, 15, 20 years? Or do you have a tankless system? (Does this make me a "Tankie?") 😁
I'm worried that if I don't do this now, it may fail, and it's not in the garage (or a basement, like many houses). It's smack in the middle of the house, so a leak or failure of any kind could cause a lot of damage. We also lack a water shut-off inside the house. We have to turn it off at the street.

Is there a way to tell the difference between a fighter jet vs. a regular aircraft in the sky? I can't find an answer searching the internet.
I ask because even though I'm not very far from a huge airport, we don't usually see airplanes over our house, even when they change flight patterns or have planes stacked up waiting to land. You have to go about ten miles down the road before you can see them up there circling.
This morning, I saw criss cross contrails, more than I've ever seen before, and two jets moving in the same direction at what looked like incredible speed, at what I would guess was really high altitude, because it took a while for the sound to reach me. I counted nine trails. There was one going the opposite direction a few minutes later.
It could be exercises, of course, but it struck me as odd, and made me wonder if something was going on.

I understand the simplicity of the base 10 numerical system. After all, we have ten fingers and ten toes. But, we divide time into 24 hours, and organize a year into four seasons of three months each, making these base 12 systems.
Snowflakes have six points, but starfish have five. Twelve is the Biblical number of perfection, which is why the number of the elect is symbolically a multiple of twelve. Jesus chose twelve Disciples. There were twelve tribes of Israel.
Yet, also there were 40 days and 40 nights of the flood, and the time of Jesus' testing was 40 days, both base 10.
I can't decide which numbering system makes more sense, naturally.

they will be miniature versions of full size pastry lattice or double crust fruit pies. I don't have a favorite recipe, but I do think canned fruit filling is anathema, so I reduce fresh or frozen fruit.
The closest to hand pies that I make are turnovers, but I think puff pastry is best for those.

Shot in the dark, but I need help. My mom's cable TV has that irritating feature where a message on the screen flashes ARE YOU STILL WATCHING? If you don't change the channel or something, the TV shuts itself off. It is a bitch to get it back on after that.
I've looked this up, and the directions I've been given have not worked. Is there a trick to resetting it? If it matters: Samsung TV and AT&T wireless router with cable box.

The virus commonly referred to as "bird flu" has so far infected 500 different species, including 48 types of mammals.The virus has not yet adapted to efficiently infect/replicate in human hosts, but it would not take many changes to achieve. So, I think we need to pay attention. This is a very successful virus. H5N1 is the dominant type in North America and around much of the world, but we also see H5N2 in Mexico, H7N8 emerging in Australia, and H9N2 in India.
Prescription antivirals like Tamiflu seem to be effective, if administered early in the course of illness. There are four antivirals currently approved by the FDA. There are three vaccines that protect against H5N1 specifically, and two of them include adjuvants, which boost the immune response. Two of these vaccines are grown in eggs, and one is grown in cells or eggs. None of these vaccines are currently available publicly. The US government has ordered nearly five million doses for the national stockpile, in case there is an HPAI pandemic in humans, but that number falls well short of what would be needed, and it takes months to make even that many. It may also require two shots, which makes this preparation even more daunting.
