Y'all are giving me lots of helpful advice. The guy who will inspect the water heater will be here soon. I think I want to continue with the gas tank-style water heater. I will ask about how much sooner a water softening option would reduce the life of the water heater, should I choose to go that route. When you've had hard water for ages, softened water sounds so nice. I have a friend with a saline-infused pool, and the water is glorious. Salt does degrade whatever it's in, however.
