btw "2" is a symbol that can represent anything linguistically, and the concepts that it represents doesn't have a truth value either (unless you count "truthiness" coercion in dynamic languages, where 0 is "false"). this is likewise not objective because "2" has to be contextualized like any other symbol in a processing context. trinitarian christians might say "three is one" and take that to be a profound universal truth, but even if you agree in-context, you might disagree arithmetically. try making that statement in a programming language and you get "false".

maybe this is just the classical moral objectivist vs relativist argument but if you're a relativist the idea that morals are objective is already something you disagree with, and the idea that morals have a truth value is likewise inconsistent
being a relativist doesn't justify immoral actions, it just attributes them to something other than the universe. morals are ideals that require some kind of application to be effective. the very fact that people *can* disagree on what is moral is enough to disprove the idea that they are universal (if they were truly universal they would be self-evident and not require agreement)

we already do this kind of netsplit in effect when we use a new host name or address. the reason netsplits aren't end-alls is because of federation -- irc is already "federated" and dns is already "federated" but this is a different form than fedi being "federated". to federate https you use a web browser which inherently extracts the authority component of the address, and we have countless https authorities. yes dns is rooted in iana but you just need a path to the resource which allows alt roots, and also alt roots can still align or agree with the iana consensus in probably the majority of cases where there isn't a reason to disagree (censoring authoritative nameservers, although it is more popular to censor widely used dns forwarders like google and cloudflare because recursively resolving authoritative dns records for yourself from the iana root is a lost art)
so long as we use "names" to refer to things, we need a "name server" to dereference those names. but those names can be anything -- dns names, https names, did names, it's all the same at the end of the day, just different protocols and content formats for describing resources. the focus shouldn't necessarily be to avoid dns but rather to avoid dns *censorship*, which can be done without throwing out the baby with the bath water.
one cool thing about uri space is you can always put names in a namespace as long as everyone agrees/understands what that means. our root namespace is the iana registry for uri schemes, but many people ignore the scheme and start at dns names (assuming https: or whatever). even so, a dns: uri scheme exists. dns:foo.example and dns://1.1.1.1/foo.example and dns://192.168.1.1/foo.example might all resolve to different resource records. so we can route around censorship if only we had an agreed-upon network consensus for a convention that lets us delegate this way. or we run communal dns resolvers that aren't google/cloudflare, like a community-wide hosts file almost. "the network" becomes whichever resolver you use as the entry point. (the same thing could be done with https: instead of dns: if you pick one or more "identity services" which do nothing but mint ids and map/redirect them to current locations)

the consequences of plain json is having to do all the janky hacks and making sure everyone else agrees to do the same. if i were a spec designer i would just have everyone pre-expand all terms so that there's exactly one canonical representation over the wire. i'd also force all objects to be objects, so no ambiguity between "foo" and {"id": "foo"} because a big problem with as2/ap is the lack of any sort of proper data modeling or schematic constraints
wrt mastodon network, you have an alternative option: write them off completely. you can either fork the network and try to define some common profile that's actually consistent and well-documented, but in doing so you might as well just start over and do proper data modeling and versioning etc etc. it really depends how much you care for the existing userbase, which i am personally caring less and less about with every passing moment

the concept of a singular shared "fedi" helps no one and hurts many people, global context collapse isn't a good thing and i don't want to exist in the same space as certain people. the current paradigm especially has led to nation-statification along instance lines and increased tensions and conflicts when people feel "their" space is being encroached by others who don't share the same cultural values. "fedi unity" is essentially an expression of the same mindset of "left unity" as espoused by liberals, but possibly even more fraught. it amounts to the promotion of certain cultural values over others, and right now the shitlib twitterite faction has too much influence.
when you lack any real context and can only subscribe to all-or-nothing from people, you end up coalescing around people who offend you the least. this begets unity within the subculture but can also lead to groupthink and mob mentality. those bound by no context must therefore be bound by something else: cliques or cults or circles. we should reject these ingroup/outgroup dynamics and instead optimize for explicit contexts

idk if you've ever used facebook but they have this thing called "privacy lists" where you can choose who gets to see a post, so not all of your friends/connections/etc can see everything on your profile
google+ had circles which were copied from diaspora* aspects, basically you got to pick which people to include in a list, and then make certain posts available only to certain lists
there was an extremely limited version of this in twitter circles and instagram close friends, you only get one list but it works on the same principle

reddit is more link aggregator than forums, it's just that each submission has exactly one accompanying comment thread which can be taken alongside the submission to approximate a forum
i think nodebb is probably better off than kbin in that nodebb is an actual honest-to-god forum, but who knows where the future of that stuff leads
my crank theory is we ought to be splitting things not by media type but by communication paradigm. messaging and publishing are distinct things, a social reader or browser lets you navigate feeds and the social web, discussions are more a venue than anything
the funny thing is that activitypub being like email could be so much more powerful, we could use it for messaging and we could use it to publish things or notify various resources about things related to them. the building blocks are all the contextual properties like context and audience (which things belong together by topic or by who they're aimed at). but everyone just wants to talk to mastodon or lemmy, which are just cloning twitter and reddit.
now imagine software that let you manage your online presence. not just posting on walls or whatever. something for managing actual relationships and connections. you could publish your shit on the web, or you could send messages to people, or you could read feeds or read your inbox or browse the web or participate in discussions. whatever. no one wants to build that bc it's too "complicated" and yet facebook somehow has 3 billion users without ever simplifying. bc their core product is the social graph. they don't need to simplify. if anything, the feature set is helpful to their advanced users.
i don't think we even necessarily need radically new protocols, we can retrofit together existing transports as long as we agree on what we're sending over them from a data modelling and semantic perspective, and as long as we agree on the shared behaviors we can expect -- i fully intend to reuse smtp, xmpp, http, and so on as appropriate. the most interesting thing we could be doing is closer to distributed computing than it is to passing text from A to B in yet another way

kinda but moreso like the zeitgeist in social networking rn is all twitter and what comes after twitter. mastodon is a twitter clone, bluesky is a twitter clone, nostr is used like a twitter clone, etc etc etc. everyone scrambling to replace twitter instead of just letting it die or moving on. when are we going to see something truly *new* and *better*? something paradigm shifting? i mean heck, even "a facebook clone done right" would probably be fine if it actually had feature parity

i guess you could argue diaspora* in some ways copied email but it didn't go far enough i guess

i never understood the "on my tl" thing, it just screams context collapse. no one ever complains like "why are you commenting on my reddit post" or "why are you replying downthread of my reddit comment" because you don't get notified about that shit, you're not part of the audience unless it's a direct reply or you're mentioned. we should have more control over the audience of our own posts actually

i think non-public posts are fine but they absolutely do not play well with federation. federating private materials means giving up access control or otherwise trusting every single recipient to enforce the same access control as you would

i don't think that's the right framing but it's more like maybe pushing forward shouldn't require us to wait for everyone else to catch up. maybe we should just push forward without them and then they can catch up later. there's a tendency of fedi devs to be really resistant to breaking *anything*, even if it's already broken or flat-out wrong. interop and compatibility is the primary value of fedi devs which just means that everyone is too scared to make the first move
