It's a cunning ploy by Starmer. In the 2014 indyref, the unionists said if Scotland became independent it would cease to be in the EU, the rUK would stay in & veto Scotland rejoining. This probably swung the No vote. Now that it looks like the independence parties in Scotland will get a majority in May, Starmer will rejoin the EU in order to again be in a position to be able to veto an independent Scotland rejoining, thus stopping a vote for independence. /s

On top of that, there's the underfunding of Legal Aid: per the English Law Society, over 1400 Solicitors have left the Duty Solicitor scheme since 2017; 1 in 8 duty schemes are unsustainable & at the point of breaking down; and the median age of a duty Solicitor is 51, because newly qualified Solicitors aren't entering the scheme- since it doesn't pay a living wage.
If there's a shortage of courts to appear in & a shortage of Solicitors to represent accused, of course there'll be delays.

What if they have minimal English but fluent Gaelic or Welsh?
And WTF is "A level standard"? We have Highers in Scotland, not A levels, why use a definition which only applies to part of the UK; presumably she can't bring herself to use CEFR levels since the E stands for European.

Technically no legal problem at all. Scotland is a separate jurisdiction from England & Wales, and many laws are different, even when passed in Westminster. In fact the whole legal system is different & Westminster has to take care where they want a law to have the same effect over the whole UK to write it correctly to do so.
*Politically* yes a major problem, but it's not the judges fault if the politicians cocked it up.

I am reminded of when the leader of the BNP posted a picture of black gentlemen in kilts saying "This is the future the SNP want. Keep Scotland Scottish - say no to the SNP".
And the majority of Scots on social media looked at the picture of these cool AF guys, and said yes, that is a future we want, where people can be Scottish & part of our culture regardless of where they came from or their skin colour.
When I see rising xenophobia now, that previous response still gives me hope.

Tried to order something from a business in England which I had previously used. Per website, delivery within UK still by Royal Mail; getting to checkout, instead of usual Royal Mail delivery cost it wanted a "standard charge" of more than the cost of the item.
Contact customer services, was told that because the delivery is to Scotland, UK post charges don't apply. They were unable to tell me when Scottish independence occurred, rendering us an international destination for postal services.

Law is not morality. Historically there are 2 views on unjust laws: one is "lex injusta non esta lex" (An unjust law is no law at all); the other is the law is whatever the state says is the law, but one has a moral duty to oppose unjust laws. Both theories lead to a similar outcome- one should oppose unjust laws however ones morality permits or requires.
Civil disobedience means deliberately breaking a unjust law while accepting the legal consequences of doing so & is a highly moral act.

At a cafe today, saw/heard a group of teenagers using the wifi. One of them obviously went to a site with new OSA age challenge; after brief (mild) profanity, consensus of group was just to log in using parent's photo (already on phone) & date of birth. Total delay, not more than a couple of minutes, including craic among the group.

There are about 30 million residential properties in the UK, so £38,000 million gives around £1200 per property; that would pay for a lot of renewables. Like solar pv for a third to half of all homes. How does that match up in terms of power generated?

Personally I think prisons, as such, should only be for crimes of violence or those who breach other sentences. Other serious crimes can still have "restriction of liberty" with tagging & tracking, mandatory attendance at rehabilitation courses, etc. And of course crimes against property are equitably served by fines (proportional to offenders wealth) & community service labour.

Ultimately no referendum in the UK can be "legally binding". Even if Westminster passes an Act which states a referendum will be "legally binding", after the vote it can still pass another Act to cancel any "binding" effect.
What a referendum can do is demonstrate the strength of public feeling & therefore the political implications. The Strathclyde Water Referendum is a perfect example where the near unanimity of voters scared off the proposed privatisation of water in Scotland.

Well banks charging as much, or more, for business cash deposits as for card payments incentivises business to retain cash & use it for purchases. Which leads to an ever increasing pool of cash held by legitimate businesses which doesn't get banked; that's even before you get into businesses which prefer cash to under-report turnover for tax reasons and illegitimate business (or even legitimate business which falls under financial service providers "morality clause" exclusions)

Noticing an increase in websites adding a data paywall i.e. you can either choose to be a subscriber & pay money, or you can choose to pay in data by accepting tracking & "personalised advertisements". Presumably because they aren't paid enough for un-personalised adverts.
Would handy if those posting links would flag both types of paywall.

Anyone want a "spares or repair" Konica Minolta Bizhub C250 free subject to collection from the (far) north of Scotland? It was an office workhorse for many years, but now doesn't boot up when it powers on. The previous maintainance company no longer supports such an old model, & I've not got the time to work on it.

Non-religious authoritarianism finds alternative ultimate authorities (money, the dialectic, racial purity, etc. etc.) and of course many versions overlap.
