oh also. about the thing you said with noise. yea the byd I bought is full on silent.
until you hit like 80kph.
its very angular in its design so go above that and you get weirdly loud wind noise. like it almost sounds like there's an actual pipe just with air flowing into the car.
the test-drive wasn't the high end version though. maybe that has better sound proofing.
but it didn't bother me for the reasoning of not driving that fast often even. for my situation its ok.

batteries/range are really the only thing holding them back right now. which is a retarded thing to say. I know. but in every other aspect they are kinda better.
I grew up with my mum having old, garbage cars. with a common issue where the exhaust pipe breaks under the bonnet and then the car proceeds to just gas you. and a super loud, ultra underpowered shitty diesel. I hate it lol.
the ideology part for me is "get energy independence into our vehicles" not needing to import oil

and I did those breaks. I drove from me onto the motorway. drove a bit on there. then needed to pee. then got back on to a train station where I had to pick up a friend. and then we arrived.
if that had been electric that would have been fine.
but I also hate driving distances that long.
if I look at daily use for me I think I would need to hit a charger maybe once or twice a month. inside and around town

idunno. how many people drive 400 miles in a day.
they are definitely not good yet for people who need to drive that long of distances.
im just pointing out there's infrastructure already. everywhere is electricity.
if I look at the one long road trip I did last year. I drove about 200km and then I wanted to get out anyway. and that was only 700km total one way.
I think I could do that in the tiny city byd.

I also hate the idea of all of this insane infrastructure we build up, the drilling, refining and transport and all that. for what. just to burn something. to destroy it.
the mass of fuel that a car destroys over its lifetime is insane to me.

cost per km driven wasn't at all a factor for me.
I just hate combustion engines. how loud they are, how inconsistent they are, really slow, stinky. especially if some fitting somewhere gets loose and exhaust doesn't go through the cat properly. I hate how delayed the response to throttle is too.
I don't want it.
but most of all I hate that its oil based fuel. we don't have oil in Germany, that's stupid. buy it from muslims. buy it from maybe Russia has oil dunno. ship it from US

even if you just look at one network. that I just happen to know. bp pulse. they got like a thousand fast chargers already in the UK.
they say the Renault 5 can go 410km on one charge. mixed. so realistically on motorways that probably something closer to 300. and it can charge at 100kW. so that only takes 30 minutes to charge to 80%.

I literally only bought this one because there's a government grant now. not that much. couple of thousand if you buy an EV based on your income. and then BYD came up with their own sale.
if you visit a page of a car that you knew costs 30,990.00 and then a week later they take off 6,000 (max grant) and their own discount of 7,600.
as a German I have to buy something on that much of a discount.
kinda been waiting for a deal like that.. on a Renault 5. not this.. but oops

drive to the gym or shopping or swimming and when you are done it’s charged. In daily life in my area I can easily see how you would never need to go hit a gas station like thing ever again. Except for the one or two big road trips a year I might do.
The Renault 5 and the byd I bought both are city cars. Definitely. Capable and nice. But for cities and towns.
Maybe I’ll make some videos about it when I get it. Probably.

the Chinese one I ordered has a smaller battery than the r5 but more powerful motor. So less range than it even. But idunno.
If you have a garage at home and/or a charger at work. That could still work out not going 400 one way but in total they could do that.
No petrol car leaves your home or work with a full tank of gas. Which is actually a good benefit of electric cars. One of several.
But I don’t have charging at home or work. And for me that doesn’t feel needed even.

Second guessing that I signed for a Chinese car already. I had the chance to just sit in a Renault 5 yesterday. And my immediate reaction was just “ah fuck man. It’s really nice”.
It’s laid out better, has a bigger dash screen thing. Really nice materials. Nice fabric and stitching.

My working theory right now for why Renault seems like they are just building better cars than Germans and Americans right now:
They aren’t trying to take over the world and still have more engineers and passionate designers.
They only have Renault, Alpine and Dacia as brands.
Way different from VW or GM or more extreme Stellantis with 25 brands.
Maybe a bit naive but it can be true. Engineer or even vision lead companies will produce better products than just finance people can
