If there’s any #Godot developers out there making 3D games, I could kind of use some help / advice on how to fix this weird issue I’m having.
Camera is basically attached to a SpringArm and mounted on a pivot, the pivot rotation is what’s used for camera rotation. When switching perspectives, a piece of code is supposed to line up the pivot rotation to the player_mesh rotation. Except it seems to be flipped when I face certain directions?!

One thing I really want to figure out for @nprofile…r5t7 involves creating some kind of a widget sidebar that shows the statuses that federate out. While I could show all the widgets of the Note objects we create, it’s not super clear yet how we can show stuff like boosts and quotes yet.

@nprofile…r6lk I honestly hate WordPress sometimes. In a minimal install, it’s not so bad, but so much of the community advice to get something working is “Just install a plugin!” and suddenly you have 50+ plugins and site that’s an eldritch abomination on the backend.

@nprofile…np7x We Distribute has been integrated with ActivityPub for many years, ever since such integrations were purely prototypes. I like pushing the boundaries of what’s currently possible with this network, and I think that it’s important for a news publication about the Fediverse to be on the Fediverse itself. These kinds of experiments are worthwhile.
The ActivityPub integration for WordPress is actually really good, it’s just that WordPress itself is sometimes a total headache to develop for.

I think the simplest solution might be to use a very simple skeleton theme, and modify it as necessary. I could keep it simple, not depend on too many plugins, and gradually shape it to look and feel the way I want it to…

What’s kind of frustrating is that there aren’t really any #WordPress themes that capitalize on Fediverse integration. I don’t mind adding custom stuff in, but I’m torn between either altering a proprietary theme, or trying to code my own from scratch.
Building from scratch means way more work, but it’s theoretically well-supported to do what I want. Altering something that exists means technical debt, on a system that could change at any time.
I just don’t know what to do. Do I put all the work up front, or do it over time on the backend?

Trying to figure out how best to modernize We Distribute’s site theme. I’ve been experimenting with the customization system in the twentytwentyfive base theme WordPress ships with and…it’s kind of good, but just not quite where it needs to be.
Right now, it’s all held together with a crusty expired paid theme. It needs a facelift. I’m not sure if I want to write my own theme from scratch, but a lot of paid themes hard-code so much stuff that I don’t need or want.

I really wish @nprofile…k30q offered a dedicated integration for Webhooks. I know there’s a third party bot thing that I can host myself, but it would be so much cleaner to just have it right there in the UI for integrations.
Being able to hook into a code repository or OpenCollective would be so, so useful for making little chat messages.

@nprofile…2crl I understand your point, but that’s actually a categorical misunderstanding of how AT Protocol’s various layers work. The Fediverse is actually way more tightly coupled when it comes to instances and identities.
At least Blacksky has demonstrated that it’s possible to run the entire stack, and migrate absolutely everything to it from Bluesky.

I’m constantly blown away by how good gaming on #Linux is these days. While it’s still not perfect, and some live service games will never ever work, the idea of buying a AAA game on day one and have everything work is still wild to me.
Valve has done some absolutely incredible work in making this whole thing viable. Most days, the only bugs I have to deal with are the same ones Windows users have.

Advertisements on YouTube are beyond intolerable now. Just listening to an hour of two people talking results in an ad every five minutes, with the skip button alternating different positions.
It’s so shit, but so much of the good content is still on there. I’d love to find a way to get more good creators onto #PeerTube instead, even if they’re just mirroring a channel.

For some time now, We Distribute has been looking at organizing a fundraiser for our organization. It might be a Kickstarter, it might be something else. Still figuring that one out.
As a tech publication based entirely within the #Fediverse, we have a unique opportunity to expand our operations, provide better consistency in the articles we publish, and pay people to write and create media with us.
At this point, we’re very small, and at constant risk of burnout. I am hoping to change this. If I were to pass around a form to collect email addresses for people who want to be there on our Day One campaign launch, would this be something you’d be interested in?

Tusky is really good if you’re going for a “vanilla” Mastodon experience. As an Akkoma user, though, Moshidon offers a bunch of extra features that fit well with the platform.

@nprofile…dn53 The short answer is that Bluesky’s various pieces could qualify as “mostly decentralized”, but one piece that is centralized is basically the account registry of DIDs. Most of the AT Protocol could be hypothetically stood up with independent infrastructure, it’s just that this part is managed by Bluesky for whatever reason.

From the perspective of advocacy, I think we really need to take the experiences of SocialBC and other initiatives, and develop a comprehensive playbook on what things were tried, and how these efforts got a foothold in their local communities. Even though SocialBC is small, it’s a compelling case study.

I’ve been playing #ClairObscur #Expedition33 for about two weeks straight now. It’s beautiful, dark, enigmatic, deeply surreal, and probably one of the most exciting and satisfying games I’ve played in years.
The music, story, art, and gameplay are fantastic. The scenery is like something out of a fever dream. The world-building feels like a whole lot of “show, don’t tell”, which only adds to the mystery. The combat and character build system stacks and branches in some really incredible ways, too.

If I were to make a small game about the Fediverse, it would probably be about project management. It might look like Civilization or another political management game, but also have an insane amount of WarioWare-like mini games. If you fail them, your approval ratings go down.

A question for #Fediverse devs: I’m thinking about better ways to document development of the #ActivityPub stack. This would include explanations, demo code, example snippets, and various sections explaining how to build a fully working Fediverse server, with consideration for all of the FEP documents as well.

Make no mistake, I really love what Ghost is doing with publishing. I’m a happy customer, and intend to stay there for the time being. But Ghost’s current ActivityPub offering is ultimately very limited, even when compared to Mastodon.
I think Bonfire could provide the building blocks to make something similar to Ghost, but with a far more robust amount of features under the hood.

This is a really great read by the @nprofile…l8y3 team. As someone who has done all kinds of experiments with long-form articles and publishing directly on the #Fediverse, there are a number of headaches and hurdles we still need to figure out.
My overall philosophy is this: rather than adapting existing content management systems to use ActivityPub federation, it’s preferable to build a CMS for the Fediverse, with explicit considerations for how the instance and the network should interact with each other. Everything, from the dashboard to side-effects of interaction, should be designed with federation considerations in mind.

On the one hand, I’m glad that I back up all of my articles on Archive.org. It makes the process of retrieving lost content fairly trivial…
Except, of course, when I’m trying to get media that’s not actually part of the backup, and is just a dead link to a place where it used to be hosted.

One thing that kind of makes me uncomfortable with getting into JavaScript is the sheer amount of frameworks and middleware out there. For the frontend, do I want to use Svelte? NextJS? Fresh? React?
What about the backend? Express? h3? Hono?
Then there’s stuff like Yarn and Bun and npm…
It’s just turtles all the way down.

@nprofile…mkea I think there’s a real benefit to finally integrating music platforms into the space. Bandwagon lets artists syndicate their tracks to a global discovery system and even user-run internet radio stations, while still taking full advantage of ActivityPub.
It’s still early days, but having first-class support for this stuff would really bolster the current Fediverse music community here.

@nprofile…mkea Funkwhale is a federated music server that pivoted from being like a “stream my own music collection to myself” (GrooveShark) kind of platform to a “also add accounts for artists to stream their music to others” (SoundCloud) platform. It’s been kinda dormant for a while, but there’s a big 2.0 release around the corner with a total UI overhaul.
Bandwagon is kind of like an open Bandcamp alternative that also federates, but every account just uploads their own music and can post tour dates and stuff. It’s built on Emissary by that project’s dev, and has a decent amount of artists from the musician part of the Fediverse.

#Bandwagon is really starting to add polish. I think the inbox / timeline still needs some design love, but I’m really impressed at how well the music and discovery side of the app is working.
I feel like this is a really solid starting point for the FediMusic community, but I would love to see federation working with other efforts like Mirlo.space and Funkwhale in the near future.

I am taking a small break from the #Fediverse for a little while. No, it’s not permanent. This semester was a really tough one, and I need to focus on wellness for the near future.
Right now, I’m playing Oblivion Remastered, and it’s wonderful.

It sounds like I’d still have to create user accounts locally, if only to properly represent delegation of actions and fight against spam. But, the idea of automatically creating an account on successful authentication doesn’t sound too ridiculous.
But, those accounts don’t have to be Actors themselves. A Group admin could review submitted Events, and approve them, and the resulting create / announce activities could use the Group Actor as the author…

Kind of a weird thought I’ve been kicking around…
So, it’s possible to use the Mastodon API for sign-in and authentication, right?
Would it be possible to leverage a remote Mastodon account as a user account in a Web app, then give it the ability to create an Activity within the app, without creating a Note on Mastodon?
I’ve been kind of thinking about having an app where people can sign in and submit Event activities to a Group. I don’t want to create a bunch of Actor accounts, but I don’t mind the idea of having a Group Actor delegate on behalf of signed-in users with MastoAPI.
If this sounds like “Poor Man’s c2s”, yeah, that’s basically it.

@nprofile…hftj @nprofile…7nr8 @nprofile…t9gy I like the term personally, and am still in favor of it. But here’s the real challenge: explain what the Fediverse is to someone who has never used it before, and is only now just learning about it.
This is something we’re trying to figure out internally. There are ways to explain it that are less technical and easier to understand, but it takes a lot of workshopping to accurately explain what it is, how it works, and why people would want to use it.

@nprofile…t9gy @nprofile…7nr8 I think one problem we have in this space is explaining its core premise and benefits. When I started writing about the Fediverse, one challenge I really struggled with was the fact that I kept having to explain big concepts before ever getting to the point of the article.
It’s kind of our Achilles heel when it comes to advocacy. I think ideas have to be broken up into smaller bits, to make the concepts more palatable to people who have never used this stuff before.

I wish WordPress had a straightforward way of separating Pingbacks from Comments. Pingbacks are super useful, but it kind of sucks having them all get mixed in with ActivityPub replies.
