Lots of the southern states are out of bounds now too. Funnily, since you mention Port Harcourt, even though Rivers State is on the list, they make an exception saying PH is safe to visit. Must be because of all the oil wealth there.

Yes, I grew up in Jos. I haven't been back in decades; it's not really been safe to.
We used to holiday in Kaduna quite a lot, cos it wasn't too far away, and I had family there.
(And yes, Kaduna State is on the Do Not Travel list too 😞 )

The situation in Nigeria makes me sad.
The US has asked all non-essential embassy staff to leave the country, and has updated its travel advisory recommending that citizens must not go to 23 (of 36) states.
This includes the state where I grew up, Plateau State. It's a beautiful state that was, back then, a centre of tourism.
Amusingly, despite a number of recent riots and massacres, it hasn't updated the state motto: Home of Peace and Tourism.

Sometimes little things niggle way more than they're supposed to.
There's a TV show called Ellis about a cop who drives to small English towns when there's been a murder to solve the crime. Often the local cops aren't welcoming. They think they don't need the help.
Ellis is a Black woman
There was a review in The Independent that condemned the show for "identity politics" even tho the show almost never mentions race or gender.

My view is that it's a tool, and it's my job to figure out how to use it best. Yes, it's a tool that completely changes a huge part of what I used to think was my job, but it's a tool nonetheless.
The environmental question is a valid one, but there's an element of hypocrisy in the way that we only question the environmental impact of things we already don't like.

Another example of people treating racism like a 3-act drama.
Act 1: A brown Muslim Londoner is one of a number of people invited to be part of a Welcome to London campaign.
Act 2: He receives racist abuse from thousands of people, reducing him to tears.
Act 3: He invites the trolls to his store for free dates. A handful (𝚗̲𝚘̲𝚝̲ thousands) apologise.
Cue warm, fuzzy, triumphant article. Cos I guess this means racism is now over.

It really annoys me that people (especially white people) think that racism has to have a 3 act structure.
Act 1: A racist act occurs. (In this case, a Benfica player racially abused Vinicius Jr after Vini scored a goal and danced in celebration.)
Act 2: Uproar. Racism! Not in this day and age! Boo!
Act 3: Vinicius Jr scores against Benfica again in the return game and dances again. Everyone celebrates. And racism is fixed forever. The end.

I've always felt that every group, especially minority groups, only has so much leeway to air their issues.
And that's why I can't get animated about the N-word at the Baftas.
It must have been a horrible, horrible moment for those actors. But I accept that the man said the word, not because he's a racist, but because his Tourette's recognised that that was the worst thing to say at that moment.
I also accept that the BBC fucked up by not bleeping it. But it's most likely just human error.

Working today, and it's quiet so I'm listening to an audiobook. It's The Rosie Project by Graeme Simsion.
It's brilliant. Made me realise that I've been approaching audiobooks all wrong.
I'm a bit pompous with the physical books that I read (only big L literature, if you please), but light, easy books are best when it comes to audio.
Luckily this wonderful book has a sequel.

Being Nigerian, I can probably tell a dozen different Nigerian accents within a single sentence.
That's why I find it impossible to believe that Australians can't tell their accents apart. I know that *I* can't, but surely they can.

To my English ears, people from France and French-speaking West Africa (3,000 miles apart) have pretty much the same accent. And so do people from Portugal and people from Brazil (4,500 miles apart). And so do people from Spain and people from Mexico (5,600 miles).
But people from Manchester and Liverpool (a measly 30 miles apart)? Nah, they sound completely different!

One weird thing about growing up between two cultures is that you sometimes misidentify the source of the things you know.
Here's a silly little example:
When two elephants fight, it's the grass that suffers.
I've known this proverb all my life, and I've always assumed it was an English saying, something the average white Brit or American would also know. But apparently that's not the case? It's just an African thing?

New parent classes go on about breastfeeding and growth. All important stuff. But there's one huge parenting thing that they all leave out:
Throwing stuff away.
Children generate and accumulate so much crap. So, so much.
And as parents we're wracked with such guilt throwing any of it away - whether it's a finger drawing from nursery or a crappy Happy Meal toy.
Teach us to throw stuff away and you'll change our lives.

During the heat of the Covid pandemic, I thought that what we were living through was changing the world forever. On a small scale, I couldn't imagine ever shaking anyone's hand again or standing close to a stranger. On a larger scale, I couldn't imagine people congregating in large crowds or flying across the world for leisure.
Looking back from 2026, it doesn't seem to me that anything has changed at all. 2026 could well be 2019.

The book that impacted me the most this past year was Chris van Tulleken's Ultra-Processed People.
I don't know enough about the area to fully interrogate his assertions, but I broadly agree that UPFs seem bad for us; as they spread across the world so does food-related illness (it seems to me).

I do not know why my country, Nigeria, has caught Trump's eye. Obviously I'm not buying his lie that he's a crusader for Christianity, but I suspect that that might be something to do with it. The US Right has held Nigeria up as an example of the "Christian genocide" for years, so maybe he's playing to that crowd.
I'm not jumping to the conclusion that it's oil. America and Nigeria produce similar oil types; in fact, Nigeria is a net importer of US oil, not exporter.

So a few months ago I watched an 18+ movie on Amazon Prime Video, but because I'm normal I never really use Prime Video. In fact the next time I logged in was yesterday. We'd had a huge early Christmas meal and the whole larger family was sat around the TV in a food coma.
"Let's watch Red One on Prime," someone said. So I logged in...

I was chatting with a Black friend of Jamaican heritage. She was appalled that a Nigerian she'd met knew next to nothing about slavery.
It's Black history! she said.
It's *your* history, I explained.
For Africans that sad story ended when the ships left the shore. Our schools teach us about the impact of that devastation, not what happened on the other coast.

My 11 year old son wets the bed. As his parent, it's a pain in the arse. But I try not to make him feel bad about it, cos I know that it's partly genetic, passed from father to son. I used to wet the bed too, and I've told him so.
Here's the strange thing. Now that he's 11, he rarely wets the bed. The only exception is at the change of the seasons. Now that we're going from autumn to winter, he's bedwetting again. Then it'll stop till winter to spring. And then spring to summer.

This really pisses me off.
As a cis male I cannot claim to understand what it feels like to be a cis-woman or a trans woman, but even I can see that this is petty and wrong.
To be fair, I am not angry at the Womens Institute or the Girls Guide. Both organisations seem very apologetic; the choice has been taken away from them by the law.

I value politeness.
I know how that sounds. It sounds centrist; it's the opinion of a person who is happy with the status quo.
But I genuinely believe that change - even radical change - can only be achieved with politeness (plus insistence, of course).
I hate that we've lost politeness from today's politics. If I was American, I *would* like to discuss immigration with Trump. But when he is so rude about Somalis how can any discussion take place?
(And Trump's not the only one doing it.)

In the movie Eyes Wide Shut, did Tom Cruise take his clothes off? I'm curious, but not curious enough to rewatch the film, since I remember it not being great.
Cruise strikes me as someone who might be a bit of a prude. I can't imagine him getting naked on film.

One thing that I hate about the immigration debate in the West is the idea of the "useful immigrant". We pillage the developing world for its doctors and nurses, but try to leave everyone else there to die in ill health.
I just heard of something Canada is doing that is, maybe, a good halfway house. Apparently it has a deal with The Philippines to train nurses in that country in the expectation that some will move to Canada while some stay behind.

I was recently at a meeting in which senior mgmt asked us to put cash figures on how much AI would save the business.
My position: AI, at this point, won't save us any money - but we should adopt it nonetheless.
Someone else said: there's a task that we don't currently do cos it costs £5m, but with AI it'll only cost £3m.
"And how much profit will it make?"
"No profit - but we're saving £2m!"

25 years ago I was the only young person in my church in my midsize English town, surrounded by old people. And then, in 2004, Blair let in the Poles and Romanians, and my church was flooded with young families and the sound of children laughing.
Then Brexit, and the youth drained out of the pews again. Fast.
Yesterday, my priest told me there are plans to shut churches down.

Just finished the audiobook of The Trees by Percival Everett. It's really good - witty, pacy, and unflinchingly brutal.
It's set in Trump's America, and is about race.
Call me naive, but while I knew that systemic racism exists, and I knew that white rap fans sometimes say nigga, and I knew that cops get triggerhappy around Black men, I kinda thought that the in-your-face, 1960s-style racism was mostly a thing of the past. This book taught me that it isn't.

Nigeria has problems. We all remember the kidnapped Chibok schoolgirls & Boko Haram. These days, we talk about 'bandits' - nomadic marauders who sweep into villages at night, killing.
Yes, the perpetrators are often Muslim, and the victims sometimes Christian.
But I don't think it's about religion at all. It's climate change.

It's a strange feeling logging onto the news to hear that Trump has just declared war against my country, Nigeria.
On the one hand, it's scary. Cos not only is it the greatest military force in human history, it's the greatest military force in human history at the whim of a madman.
But then he's got such a short attention span that next week he'll be warring against Tatooine.

The UK govt has passed a law strengthening its ability to strip terrorists¹ of their British citizenship. It will also allow the govt stop terrorists ² from renouncing any other nationality they have (cos if they do, the UK won't be able to render them stateless).
The govt says this will only affect terrorists³. Not dual citizens like, for example, Tommy Robinson who is not a terrorist⁴
