It's that point of the year where I wait in anticipation to see in any of the weird little pinches and cuttings of things I've been stuffing in various random nooks and crannies all over the yard will spring to life.
It feels somewhat appropriate that it's a bit of an easter egg hunt. My brain fog means I definitely have no memory of what I put where and I'm occasionally very pleasantly surprised with my decisions.
I'm already happily seeing patches of sedum I tucked around in November and December. I love weaving sedums around my garden. They create such amazing low maintenance texture and always let you know when they are happy to be somewhere.
This is my main focus on gardening with mecfs. I do a bit if the more intensive stuff when I have the spoons, but working with the weather and seasons to get things established is about a million fewer spoons in terms of effort and reward. The majority of my planting season ends in April, right around the time things start to get too warm for my POTS. Navigating mecfs is like learning to surf. You have to look for the right waves to ride, and then just jump on for the journey.

I actually add the tiniest bit of borax to my new beds where I am because our soil is lacking in boron. I could never get my beets to bulb up before. It helped a lot.

When it was really bad here during the heat dome we just got a small ac and turned one room into the cool room and then had fans in the rest of the house. The best fan we have is one that fits in the window with reversible air exchange and would turn it on as soon as the sun went down to pull the hot air out and the cool air in. My partner also built a corsi rosenthal box on the outside (our window was under a large overhang. It made the forest fire season livable. Gonna try to make one with a little roof over it this year.

This is your early spring reminder that diatomaceous earth damages anything living with a carapace, not just things you don't want in your yard. This includes many beneficials. Though non-toxic it is not without damage and requires some genuine foresight and responsibility if you absolutely must use it.

I do this. It need to be inoculated before you add it to the soil or it pulls nutrients, so we just throw it into our compost for a few weeks.

I haven't been able to find anything like this online, but given the fact that the internet, as we once knew it, doesn't really seem to exist anymore - it probably does. Still I thought I would share my strawberry tower design.
I made this from a heat treated pallet that I had attempted to turn into an oyster mushroom farm, but it was the year we were trapped in the heat dome and stuck inside with forest fire smoke and my MECFS was at peak awful. It floundered in the heat, but my friends hauled it to my place when we moved and it was used as a compost bin last year.
Our climate here has changed a lot since I first started gardening. We are now nearly underwater for the winter and a desert without rain for the summer it seems.
Because of that I've been trying to incorporate a moisture battery inside any of our new beds. The cost of soil and compost here have absolutely skyrocketed beyond anything I've ever seen, so we are attempting to compost in place as much as possible. It's a slow process, but it's working and mulching everything with our fallen leaves keeps it from looking too messy.
I started with the existing compost in the bin and secured it a bit with some bark pieces from our firewood, then lined the lower box with cardboard and added some topsoil, kelp, canola meal and rock phosphate.
I have also been incorporating any charcoal from the fireplace into the bin and our other compost to create some biochar for the soil as well as wood ash because we have highly acidic soil around the Salish Sea. The central tower will be lined with burlap when I get some from my friend who roasts coffee.
I am placing a central column of firewood and wood waste surrounded by more topsoil and organic compost materials. It will break down over time, but we will continue to add materials from the top .
I have currently punched holes into the cardboard and planted some Albion strawberries that were growing in a pot with my fig tree. As they grow I will build the tower with the offshoots cutting holes in the galvanized mesh for them. The mesh should be buried and integrated in the base enough to keep the tower in place without too much reinforcement, but possibly a u-bar if I notice leaning. The mesh is secured with UV resistant zap straps for now because it was what I had, but a rust proof wire would be ideal.
The corners of the lower part of the tower will house pollinator friendly flowers and the top will eventually house either chives or a tumbling cherry tomato. I will post updates as it grows.

Was sitting here this morning thinking about my American friends and my Palestinian friends and my friends in Sudan and Congo and Iran and the current state of the world and my heart was breaking.
One of the worst aspects to my whole battle with MECFS is not being able to show up as solidarity in physical form, but I realized I do spin a pretty fierce dance party. Revolutions need soundtracks and sandwiches, and as much as I love CSNY, I sometimes can't handle yet another spin of Kent State.
It's not much, but when I have the spoons I will be posting tunes. Feel free to share yours under the same hashtag cuz at the end of the day we all need to shake this shit out so we can keep going. I think the satellite music station at the grocery store was playing AI Christmas carols today. Housing is a human right, but stable housing should be a human right.
I can't even begin to explain what having stable, reliable housing for the last year has done for my chronic ptsd and chronic illness. Everything has been better - Sleep, mental health, digestion, you name it.
It breaks my heart that this is legitimately a massive privilege these days here in Canada.
If you are a renter here in BC, there is no stability in your human right to housing. Our rental protections have been gutted for years and years. As someone who has gone through that process it helped absolutely nothing even when it was adjudicated in our favour.
Nearly everyone I know lives in fear of eviction or homelessness. There is no real way to ever feel comfortable or at home. If you are disabled there is nothing available that will allow you housing at this point other than a 7-14 year waitlist, or family unless you've already been in the system for years.
This is completely lost on older generations most of the time. We are powerless in the face of wealthy landlords who will do whatever the fuck they want with next to no retribution for any of it.
Stable housing should be a human right. An ability not to feel like a leaf in the wind who pays 75% of your income to subsidize a wealthy land owner. Life shouldn't have to be this awful.

Our history is just as bad, if not worse that the US for genocide, but Canada has this cultivated facade of being the "nice guys" baked into it. People who can't comfortably view it for exactly what it is give away that they have never confronted their attachment to "whiteness" and deep seated nationalism.

One of the ways I alleviate some of the loss I experience surrounding M.E. is by watching 4k walks in different cities and places around the world. I used to be an avid walker and alpine hiker and it helps me feel like I still get out. One thing that has struck me this summer though, is I don't think my auDHD brain could handle the cicadas in some cities. I find it sensorily overpowering in the worst way.
Some cities I've travelled to have been overpowering in terms of sound for me: cars, traffic, lots of overwhelming sounds and I usually have to retreat at some point a few times a day to recuperate, but I think cicadas in Tokyo on a hot summer night would find me curled up in the fetal position.

15 mins with a hedge trimmer is my maximum output on a good day. I likely won't be able to do any more for a week, but I haven't damaged myself too badly. PEM is brutal, but I am slowly learning to work within my acceptable envelopes, except when I'm not. :neobot_upside_down: Managed to have enough energy for a cold shower to manage the overheating that the 15 minutes of garden work causes. Cooling down seems to help a lot. Heavy rest for the rest of the day now.

Did a minor repair to reinforce the pockets on the first pair of pants I ever designed. I'm so grateful I learned to sew. I made them almost five years ago out of some denim coloured cotton chambray and they haven't aged a bit save the area around the pocket where I should have put a bar tack, but didn't really know/ understand that part yet. Today with a tiny 5 minute repair they are good as new and as light as pajamas.
I used to think I hated summer, but I was wrong. I just never had any comfortable summer clothes for most of my life, and being a size that constantly fell somewhere between standard and plus sizes I sort of gave up.
I wish sewing had been more size inclusive when I was younger, or i'd jumped right into pattern making like I did when I started in my 40s. Life could have been way more comfortable and expressive on so many levels.

Our hugel-ish garden bed is still missing a few inches of compost/topsoil, but it's already growing mushrooms out of the dead wood we buried, and we just harvested our first zucchini. Not too bad for a half assed attempt at trying to get things started. It's been a big back and forth in temperature this summer, which is way easier than the heat dome we had a couple years ago, just a little slower to set fruit this year with the exception of our cayenne peppers which apparently are loving life enough to have passers by slow down and stare at them.

This morning I learned that the IDF specifically targeted the transgender ward of an Iranian prison killing at least 100 transgender people and it received nothing but a footnote in media. I have the rage.
Subsequently I found a video of raccoons playing bongo drums on a platter of jello, because my brain feels broken and I want to cry. I highly recommend jello raccoons in the face of the largest trans massacre since WWII, but also making sure people you know are aware of these actions.

During the brutal heat dome here we put damp towels in the freezer for our pets as well. The dog liked to lay on them and the cat like them draped over him. My pup also had an evaporative bandana that helped a lot because she was a tiny old lady and it sat right against her chest.

Sometimes I have to laugh at the gimmickry of garden supply. I just got a "supply" catalogue from a bulb company I support. I will admit that there are a few tools I find invaluable, like a Japanese weeder, secateurs, a loop hoe, but I cannot fathom spending $150 on a tomato trellis or $99 on a cucumber trellis when I could use a stick. Seedling tongs? I have neuropathy and essential tremor and can still figure out how to get my seedlings out of the container.
I feel like it's beginner gardeners who get taken advantage of too. Like, who on earth told you that you needed a compost blanket? Have you heard of leaves? A sheet of cardboard? I haven't used a tomato cage in years because I realized I could just use a bamboo pole or a long stick and tie the tomato to it and never fight with trying to find the tomatoes ever again and then compost it when it had lived its life. Accessibility tools are one thing, but i feel like most of it is useless stuff for white people to spend their money on. Anyways, that's my grumpy rant of the day. Spend your money on plants and seeds.

Sometimes gardening is just outsmarting pests. Cabbage white butterflies are very territorial and try to avoid each other. I still need a sharpie for my black dots and I glue them on the end of a wooden chopstick to make it look like they are hovering, but they seem to be passing me by so far.

It's a little late for peppers, but we keep having late heat here, where it's not warm enough for them until June, so it should be ok. They both have a fairly short season.
A bunch of cherry tomatoes
Empress of India Nasturtium which is not that productive but I absolutely love the colour. Will do some salad nasturtium soon as well as it has huge leaves and makes great little wraps.
I multi-sow in small pots and then prick out when they have true leaves. Saves a load of space and work.
I'm going to nap now, but I'm so glad I got this done!

Tiny sprouts survived the torrential downpour last night, the lettuce being a little melodramatic as was expected. Turnips and beets seem happier already and the perpetual leeks were already pretty sturdy. Direct sowed some radish clusters and parsley, and did some more starts - A red kale and a lacinato, some holy basil which does far better here than the other basils, and which we also use a load of for Thai cooking and a bunch of cilantro.
15 mins of work does a huge amount for my mental health and sense of accomplishment in a day. It's not lost on me that I have the privilege of a supportive partner who also likes to garden and moves my bags of soil around for me among many other things, but gardening feels like something I can still do with mecfs and I'm so grateful for that.

One bed completed without a compost delivery. Just went a little more lasagna on the top of the bed.
Currant and peas planted with transplants waiting in the wings to finish hardening off. First bed at our actual home. Feels pretty amazing.
It's been fun to weave years of health into something. The lower half of the bed is mostly hugelkultur, with upper layers of compost and homemade biochar, then lasagna of bedding straw and compost/soil mixture.
It's a 30" deep bed, so a lot to fill.

People complain about the price of eggs in the States, but can I talk about how the price of compost has basically doubled where I live?!
Literally rotting vegetables and leaves?
When we built our garden at the rental we lived in about 4 years ago, the compost cost us $169. We need the exact same amount at our new place. The cheapest I can find it for is $344.
Mind boggled.

If you have low water access or just generally consider yourself a crummy gardener, consider sedums. Especially native ones. You can literally propagate them by breaking off a small chunk of your original plant and sticking it in the ground. You can neglect them pretty extensively and they will just keep doing their thing. They mat out and squelch your weeds, giving anything else you plant a better chance as well.

Three Good Things
Planted the little apple tree that arrived in the mail today. I'm glad it's tiny because it took most of my energy today to plant it. I named it Excelsior which is funny because it leans a little.
I heard my first bee of the season buzz past my ear.
There are tiny lupins popping up in the front bed and the native sedums I planted seem quite happy.
Things seem harrowing in the world on the daily, but the plants pay no mind.

Haida potatoes. My heart is excited to grow them and keep growing them for ever and ever. There's a very good chance they are pre-settler potatoes based on stories from elders in Alaska and BC. They are traced to Mexican and Peruvian cultivars with no european hybridization and have been cultivated on Haida Gwaii for over 200 years and likely far longer. Special interest audhd hyperfocus activated.

Was having kind of an out of sorts morning and then I went to the post office and all my seeds had come.
While i was on my way into the post office I put my hand in the pocket of my raincoat and found some beautiful little bumblebee earrings in my pocket that I bought last year at Pride and completely forgot about. It was such a surprise.
So I got home and planted some heirloom sweet peas from the 1600s that are supposed to be the nicest smelling variety of sweet pea on earth. I didn't even mind that it was pouring with rain while i did.
Feeling like a rather serendipitous day. Gardening is hope.

Good morning from my babies! I started half of these nearly a month ago, and they made it through a very dark, cold month with only a little legginess.
The others I planted two days ago and they almost immediately leapt out of the soil.
Left column:
Hakurei Turnips ( a little early but they are getting fleece)

Perpetual Delft Leek

I used to work for some very wealthy Americans when I was a designer. One day, one of their trophy wives made a realization about Canadians and it was spot on. She said, I think I've realized that the difference between Canada and the US is that everyone has their price in the States, it's just a matter of finding out what it is, but you Canadians are really different. Took advantage of our low temps to cold stratify some woolly sunflower and skirret seeds outdoors and then got inspired to get some early starts underway as well.
I found an old Ikea mini greenhouse for sale second hand complete with led grow lights for under $20 at the end of the summer, which is especially helpful in keeping the cat away from the new seedlings. He decapitated a bunch last year.
Starts for this year, so far, are:
Bull's Blood Beet
Delft Perpetual Leek, a perennial leek variety
Perennial Chard
Hakurei Japanese Turnips
I cluster sew in small pots to save space which also tends to increase productivity. Not great for carrots or parsnips though, as their roots tend to get entangled.

As a trained firefighter I'm astounded/horrified at the number of reporters not wearing masks while reporting on the fires in LA.
A good story isn't worth sacrificing your life and health to hydrocarbons and burning plastic. The average home in 2025 is so toxic while burning that it's hard to watch; far more toxic than homes historically have ever been throughout history. This is something they drilled into us deeply while training.
The cause and effect can be long term and utterly devastating. A mask is gonna save your life in the coming years, be it pandemic or flames.
Wear a mask, shower often. Wash your hands before you eat. A lot of firefighters died before we figured out those basics.
