You might be able to explain to a Christian that someone they're defending actually said some bad things, you might be able to get them to admit that the person wasn't 100% holy. You might get them to imagine the person had ulterior motives. But you will never get them to notice that their allegiance to the Christian label was so great that it caused them to dismiss your concerns, which ended up being valid. You will never get them to notice that they privileged their own sense of affinity over your very visible frustration, fear, or revulsion. At best, this will be a one-off exception in their memory. Most likely, they will still be resentful of you for having gone through this conversation.

The person who was asking the question when Kirk was shot, Hunter Kozak, said "I couldn’t have asked a worse question". That's an interesting perspective because Kozak was making a good point which Kirk was dodging. He was pointing out that leftists and specifically trans people are a small proportion of shooters, even less than you would statistically expect all things being equal. Hunter now faces likely stalking or harassment campaigns, and needing to apologize for having asked a good question. That's a rarely discussed downside of legitimizing fascist rhetoric with debate, you will be blamed for being nearby and making them look bad, when you are simply engaging with reality.

"Defund the police" was such offensive speech to certain people that they have been itching to go kill everyone who said it ever since. Defund the police is a political statement, made of words. Even if it sounds controversial, is it a stronger position than advocating for public executions? Is it a stronger position than "We must ban trans-affirming care — the entire country"? The right wing has been holding a grudge about certain speech and the solution they favor is executing the person who said it. There's just no way to square the two positions, that freedom of speech is a God-given right, and that certain speech deserves punishment. If they believe some positions are so extreme that they are worthy of death, why are they surprised that some of their followers identified their own speech as in that category?

It's incredibly admirable that when people felt 'it could be me' they responded with protest and words, and strategy. Even in the most uncharitable interpretation of 'they rioted and busted up windows and looted', it's still more honorable than how the right wing has responded here. BLM protestors faced so much scrutiny on tactics, people were expected to hold that fear and direct it in a perfectly legal way, which would also be perfectly productive, and also somehow not bother anyone.
The right wing has no standards placed on them for how to react. So far their strategy has been 'let's purge a whole bunch of people who weren't connected to the event at all'. And they are getting away with that, because by and large (white) people are able to sympathize with their fear.

I can't believe I'm still seeing takes about how 'we have to have a big tent' and 'now is not the time for purity tests'. What exactly is the problem with Mamdani then? Usually the people who are being told not to have purity tests are voters or posters, not anybody with power. So we should be even more suspicious of the tests that powerful people are using right? What is their explanation for not supporting him? We know the real reasons, he fails the support Israel purity test and he fails the support capitalists purity test.

So much reporting about how Pope Francis created a shift in the Church's perspective on LGBTQ issues. I hate that, LGBT isn't just a word that can fit in every situation. He didn't support trans people, the Vatican released a whole report about how it was bad and they were against gender-affirming care. When you use an inclusive acronym without considering if the situation would accurately be described that way you're erasing the people who were targeted.

I am fascinated by this moment of the Blue Origin hatch opening and then Bezos walking up to pretend to open it with a wrench. This means he knew the wrench wouldn't do anything, he may have even demanded from the team that he wanted to wrench the door open and they said, 'it opens from the inside actually' and he said, 'find me a wrench, I'm getting that footage'. And then at this triumphant moment for him when he's showing off to the world, disaster strikes, the door opens before he gets up to it. And then Bezos, his reaction to this, is to still walk up there and do the wrench bit. He decides, yeah, I'm still gonna do it.

Tesla is often listed pretty high up in the holdings section because it tends to make up a large amount of the fund (1-5%). You can adjust your allocations (in a 401k) or sell those funds (in an IRA) and choose options that don't hold Tesla.

I got a CPAP this year and mostly it's been good. I used the r/CPAP reddit to learn about it. pretty much every day someone on there says "I just got my machine and I feel like I can't breathe when I use it", and the replies always say "turn up your starting pressure".
A lot of people get a prescription for a CPAP that says "4-20 cmH2O", but most people actually use 7-10 cmH2O. There are countless stories on there of people trying to explain the issue to their doctor or technician and just being gaslit about how nothing is wrong and they should 'follow the prescription'. Once they learn on reddit how to configure their machine it works great and is much more tolerable.
How many people abandoned treatment because they had too low of a pressure setting when their doctors arbitrarily wrote on the prescription the same thing they write on every prescription? Why do machine manufacturers continue to use default settings that rarely work?

Numbers were consistently underreported, and many Iraqis were simply disappeared to secret prisons. Cheney is now celebrated for supporting Harris. Don't forget.

I think there's at least one simple step we could take on the reply management front. allow the OP to delete replies on their server. when I get a reply that I don't want I log in as admin and delete it. I should just be able to do that for any thread I make.
it doesn't solve everything but at least it won't stay on your profile and at least other people on your server won't see it

The 'stopping the speech for medical emergency' thing has happened in all the recent rallies. It's getting to the point that I'm suspicious. do political rallies normally have a moment like that? and they always follow it up with 'this is what it's all about, we take care of each other.' It happened once with Walz, someone seemed to have heat stroke or something. and then it just... kept happening. just happened at Arizona too. - All and any actions of the victims will be misenterpreted in the worst possible way, anything the person does will be taken as an offense and intentions will be read as hostile and manipulative, regardless of how clear they are
- All victim’s actions will be taken out of context; ie, victim said something cruel to someone, but they take out the context of the victim being abused, threatened, tortured, forced into defense mode and finally attacking out of desperation to defend themselves and get free
- The victim will commonly get provoked into giving a bad reaction, (anyone gets defensive if they’re accused of the crimes they never did, or simply triggering insults until they snap), and the reaction will become the new ‘proof’ that the victim is in fact, evil and guilty
- A lot of pressure will be put on you to react ‘correctly’ to the smear campaign; if you don’t accept to demonize this person at once, you’re getting scrutinized, shamed for your lack of morality, told that you support all these horrid things and that you are just as despicable
- You will notice a trend of people ganging together based on their demonization of the victim; they will set a standard where you’re accepted and welcome if only you also will demonize and hate this person, and if you don’t, you’re blocked, cast out, and accused of causing harm
- It will feel very easy to accept to demonize this person, and going against it will feel risky, like going against the grain, doubting the word of the many and risking being demonized yourself.
- The smear campaign continues all the way until the victim is chased out of the community and denied a voice, even if the victim commits no further crimes, awful things will be said about them, their past ‘misdeeds’ continually brought up, until the victim is commonly believed to be worthless, and becomes completely isolated, scared of society and alone
- There will be no limit to what is considered okay to do to the victim of a smear campaign; even if the victim is accused of minor bad behaviour, it will become okay to threaten, insult, shout slurs, trigger, provoke, humiliate, manipulate, and repeat any kind of abusive behaviour to the victim, all because ‘they’re bad so they deserve it’.
- People leading the smear campaign will switch between being ‘extremely grossed out and enraged’ to showing absolute joy and satisfaction when they find a new reason to demonize and smear the victim. People truly horrified of someone’s actions do not get a leap of joy when a new disaster happens, they’re not beside themselves to abuse the perpetrator all over again.
- It will never, ever be acceptable to show any mercy to the victim. Forgiveness is out of the question, trying to understand them is out of the question. Even reading or listening to what this person is saying will be banned and forbidden, unless it’s for humiliating purposes. They will be shown as absolutely irredeemable, and associating yourself with them as evil and unforgivable. You will be instructed to block or unfollow or report the person based on what you’re told, without any significant proof.
Do not fall for smear campaigns. If a large amount of people all agree that a person is the worst, but their story is exaggerated, out of context, sounds fictional, and doesn’t show any proof, and the people switch from being enraged to eager, doubt it. Participating in a smear campaign will help the abusers isolate and abuse someone, and you do not want to be a part of it. They will also smear anyone who stands up to their abuse, so you’re helping the abusers to create a place where pointing out abuse gets you cast out of the community.
