Huh, weird that Nostr, a much smaller protocol than Fedi, is more commercialized than Fedi. Almost all Fedi instances are either fully free to join or just require the mods inviting you, and they mostly rely on donations from its users to cover costs (they can even be paid for out-of-pocket, even). I expected Nostr to have a similar culture of open decentralization like Fedi. :neofox_think:

Huh, what happened with Blacksky? I remember Northsky, another alternative Bluskey community, being criticized for a moderation decision they did, but not sure what Blacksky did.
Maybe the AT community is more fragile in general. I heard from devs that the protocol is much better than Fedi's ActivityPub, but as a newer protocol, we'll have to see if it could withstand the same issues Fedi prevailed against.

Honestly, hate or admire Richard Stallman, but he and others like him literally watched the tech industry grow worse and worse over time, from "merely" overcharging people, abusing copyright, and monopolizing their power, to building a vast, near-inescapable surveillance state over the entire internet and wielding the power to enforce real-world censorship over others just saying the unprofitable thing. :drgn_sad:

I feel that although Bluskey bending its rules to allow Jesse Singal and its upcoming ToS change censoring artworks with non-con/dub-con are far worse for the userbase, this shit showed how immature the team is with any level of user support. Jay should've just taken the L and said that the team was personally okay with people like Jesse Singal. Instead, she was trying her best to dunk on those with legitimate concerns like it's a tease on video-game trolls and not the deliberate inaction against deal-breaking issues with what is now a mainstream platform that ~40 million people have built communities in.

At best, streaming reminds me of why editing is so crucial for video-making. To me, it has such immense "Random gameplay recording with 6 views that entirely consists of 'umm' and 'uhh' and heavy breathing" energy, but somehow streamers are almost as popular as Youtubers, and often make money at the expense of Youtubers, too (usually through zero-effort reaction streams). It's been really sad that this is what modern platforms have been rewarding. :drgn_sad:

It absolutely isn't like tech must continue changing and changing. Heck, MacOS and Linux were based on UNIX, an operating system from the 1960s. It's just hard in general to see that the software so many people depend on get ruined over time while its alternatives are left to catch up by a wide margin (or sometimes, they are not even trying to catch up). I wished Odysee would have been the Youtube alternative I could use. It has a *fantastic* UI, and I used to bond with its small art community there (one of its members even made fanart of me and other former Odysee users). It's just that I just cannot get into its community now, especially with my views drastically changing along with my gender identity. Yet, Youtube will just get worse for us all over time. Many talented Youtubers are leaving, leaving more and more bad actors, who will exploit their workers, take in dangerous sponsorships, and lose focus on their videos' quality, in their place. Meanwhile, the UI itself will get worse from ads and the push towards Premium due to Youtube needing even more money than they already don't need. So, the only practical thing I can think of is to use third-party clients that will seek to benefit us users. I've been loving Tubular. It works so well for watching videos with its lightweight, yet featureful interface. Maybe I'll install Dissent, a third-party Discord client, as well. After all, "Many alternatives aren't up to par" and "Big tech companies don't respect you" aren't mutually exclusive.

Ehhh, the Fediverse is indeed flawed when it comes to community (people still need to shed toxic behaviors acquired from Twitter) and functionality (most software outside of the microblogging sphere is crap, imo), but his criticisms don't hold water.
1. The Fediverse is like a "Forever Box" with instances keeping posts you thought you deleted
He states the fact that some instances will keep your posts as if it *somehow* makes Fedi worse for privacy than Twitter. However, the primary reason that platforms violate digital privacy, which is to advertise to their users shit, is completely absent purely due to most instances just having no profit incentive. Most admins seriously operate for the hell of it, and even larger instances still promote volunteer work, commitment to the wider network, and donations instead of any serious monetization. So, I'd hardly reckon admins would want to be interested in the shit you've deleted at all, let alone see the money in it. More valuable forms of data, such as user retention and what you do outside of the platform, are not collected at all, too.
2. Fedi is often more censored than other platforms
It's a legitimate concern and maybe even a serious issue in many parts of Fedi. No one should be banned for arbitrary things that aren't actually wrong or things that they can make up for. Entire groups especially shouldn't be punished, losing access to mutuals they've bonded with and creatives they've supported in the process, for what one person did. Yet, many innocent servers get defederated from just because of a nontroversy that happened more than a year ago. Still, I cannot help but point out that most of this issue is really just due to the culture of some instances. Sometimes, we forget that most Fedi users have only arrived less than two years ago. We as a community, and especially newcomers, will have to unlearn all the toxic behaviors we've acquired over at other social platforms. We need to see that there is just *nothing* to gain from shutting ourselves out from innocent instances because of one disagreement or mistake. Fortunately, many other instances acknowledge that. The Bad Space, a collective blocklist infamous for listing out completely innocent instances as bad actors, has been widely ostracized by many communities, and numerous instances, such as [The Raccoon Hollow](https://hollow.raccoon.quest) and https://kitty.social, maintain open federation while also keeping their communities well-behaved and inclusive.
Defederation is also a highly useful defense against some of the worst actors in the Fediverse. Pedophiles and pedophile instances, for example, will pose a *grave* threat to your communities, especially any fellow minors that find their place there. Sexual abuse just has no place in any community, and I just cannot give up the tool that helps enforce that.
