A few early thoughts as I'm writing the spec (it's taking a while!):
* Should I keep using Protobuf for it, or use something like Cap'n Proto instead? MsgPack has only slightly less overhead than JSON does. I want something pre-typed and nimble: the base frames will be pretty solid.
* I was thinking I could eventually submit it to IETF as an RFC, but would W3C be better?

I write messaging protocols for fun sometimes. Today's attempt is called MMP (Micro or Manageable Messaging Protocol). I'll publish the first draft soon to gather feedback.
The idea is that it's built to interoperate directly with Matrix and XMPP (in different conversations, of course), and I'm thinking of reusing the same mechanism to enable external component bridges like both Matrix and XMPP kinda do.

If Godot 4.0 had a good Lua system I could use for server-side modding I'd be all over that. I had started making a game called Beyond the Blue -- the basic idea was Bedrock addons mixed with Gmod. Maybe someone's already making a good MC clone, like Minetest wanted to be, and there's just not any attention on it, in which case please tell me all about it. If it's in a language I know I might even be able to help.

Minetest has such incredible potential and is great, but only if you've never touched Minecraft before. As soon as you get into it you realize what an incredible mess it is: somewhat confusing APIs, god-awful UIs, something untouchable that's wrong with the engine itself, plenty of touchable things wrong with the engine, and then a name that suggests it's not here to stay. Hopefully it won't be.
I can't wait for a real Minecraft replacement to come along, because MT is not it.

@npub1k0h…cz0d In my case I manually added the Ubuntu Lunar PPA. I'm pretty sure it'll break in a few months. I would have used the appimage but it refused to run (maybe it's just because I was running it in a dev container).
It's entirely up to Debian to update the version of Neovim they're supplying. You'd be better off with their tarball.

I have successfully made a #Neovim autocommand that adds the Dart and #Flutter commands from the project's linked SDK to my PATH, so when I :cd to, for example, Squirrel Maps, the project's SDKs, installed with FVM, become available for my language server!
Before I finished posting this I rewrote it into the second version which also cleans itself up.

I'm tossing the idea around of making a "slightly more featureful" Flutter-based reimplementation of Lagrange, meaning it would have all the same features, even a Flutter reimplementation of its Gemtext renderer, but prettier (probably in Zenit and proposed for inclusion into dahliaOS) and with other small things like a code editor and site menus, and proper Markdown support. I don't think I'll ever actually do it but the idea is there.

If by any chance anyone's using my Upgrade script, you can now use it to install and update Neovide with `sudo upgrade neovide`.

Updated Neovide. I should probably write an Upgrade script for Neovide (although I feel like I already have it but don't remember). It hasn't hung yet, but the toolbar is now dark gray instead of glaring white, which is a huge step up. 0.11.0 apparently fixed some Wayland bugs which should definitely improve my experience, as I'm on Wayland.

I can't quite tell but it looks like DartLS has hung up either Neovim or Neovide. The clock is behind (I took this at 19:33, the clock is hung at 19:27...) and it's not responding.

@npub18hd…kf64 Seems less of "not placing value on the community" as much as the code (or their exclusive hosting of it) is what's making them money. Companies who only sell support don't make a lot of money, except for Red Hat, and evidently it wasn't enough for them either.
Related question: does the MPL still apply to older versions of the software and source code with which it was bundled, or does this somehow retroactively affect the old code?

Just discovered #Lazyvim (a #Neovim config)... It looks like it has the file sidebar I like out of the box, completions working (how the hell?!), super fancy notification boxes (ehh) and floating command line, and it was dead simple to install. Now to get into configuring it (change the theme, font size, put the command bar near the bottom, etc), and hell let's start using it for something!

All this talk against the Business Source License, which from my understanding is "FOSS" except that other people can't make money off of your work (so technically not free or open source software). That makes sense to me. If my code weren't on Codeberg which is strict on these things, I'd have adopted a similar license a while ago. AGPL will work well enough until I can change them.

Another thing I'd need to not use a browser: a good #shopping program. I've been thinking of making a Flutter app for this (and call it Tangerine), but the challenges with that are clear. Without the mobile-only native hooks (that sometimes aren't even native themselves!) I might have to resort to breaking TOS to pull it off...

@npub1qhg…8mhf Getting rid of multiple instances of Chrome is definitely a big improvement; your storage device will thank you!
There are occasionally tasks that only Chrome can do (anything involving WebUSB for example) which I summon when I need with `echo 'chromium-browser' | using ungoogled-chromium` (using is a custom script that uses nix-shell behind the scenes and cleans up afterwards).
I think I'll use the https://fosstodon.org/users/blake/tagged/BrowserFree to track the difficult journey.

I think Lagrange has special cases hardcoded for the emoji icons for gemini://gemini.circumlunar.space and spartan://spartan.mozz.us. It's not the favicon.txt, and it sure as hell can't be coincidence that both of them have this.

I think my end-goal will be to remove all webviews and web browsers from my device, with several smaller things to fill in the gaps (including Lagrange and Fediverse apps) and probably nix-shell to fetch one again for the inevitable occasion I'll need it for something.

For example, every time I've tried (Neo)Vim I've set up the statusline to have colors and some decoration between segments (slants, triangles, etc), icons, and more. It's a good balance between practical and fun. However I tend to use VSCode instead, which I can't really do that kind of thing with.

I think in my endeavor to not use the bloated Web, I'm gonna need a good quality Mastodon app for Linux (and the same for Firefish, and maybe even Kbin). I think it's going to be something I have to make myself -- the trouble, I suppose, is deciding on the tools, but mostly committing to the project.
Maybe Rust with Iced. Maybe GTK with Python, Rust, or Go. Maybe Flutter.
Also, do I want to make one app that covers all three? An app each? Just one for one?

For inline links: you'd suffix the linked text with [1] or something, and after it, use a link line where the "name" is "[1] linked text: blablabla" or "[1] linked text" (without quotes). This is very similar to how existing HTTP gateways operate.
Should it be specified that clients should ask users if they want to turn it on for a site before rendering them, by default? That might help discourage sites from using it where it's not needed or where it might be misleading.

Right now, I think there's only one change I'd make to the Gemini spec: formalize the use (or at least acknowledgement by clients) of ANSI escape sequences that control color and bold/italic. I'd make inline links a compatible extension (the use case for this is Wikipedia).

1. in strip_html: I think this could end up with some odd display bugs with HTML entities as there's no decoding of those taking place.
2: in the practicality: some servers turn off public access to timelines, so that aspect might not work. Non-Mastodon servers like Firefish also don't work with this, mostly because their APIs are all authenticated.

Currently setting up gmi.blakes.dev (which is up) to be way more like gmi.skyjake.fi (the "original" section, the sidebar, a favicon...). @npub1ykv…ey6z In some cases you really *can't* configure it completely because mods aren't applied on your game, just the server side (for security). You're only offered a predefined list of controls you can configure and those could do different things. The only things transferred to (or used on) clients are textures and models. Per-client settings and controls just aren't a thing.

Last night I came up with more theories as to what aspects of #Minetest feel "off", apart from the linearness of moving up hills or the uncertainty of mobs. It could have to do with the scale of the world, or the way the camera is (or is not?) warped. Maybe a lack of vignette, a little too. I think knockback is missing. Maybe the zoom effect for running, or slowing to a stop.
I'm not quite sure what it is or if it's fixable, that makes the gameplay of any MT game feel so uncomfortable...

That's assuming your contacts check their email when they aren't expecting something. I do (and I also have delta chat!), but my parents, most older people who only use SMS or WhatsApp or whatever, and most younger people who get so much spam they just ignore email and only check it when they're expecting a verification code, all probably don't (the gmail audience, really).
Plus, it's painfully slow as a result of being email.

The Android recoveries scene is *wild*, man. It's a full blown operating system complete with a file manager that boots up before your full phone does. All it's missing is a web browser (and I guess texting/calling support).
It would be cool to have a similar EFI recovery system; keyboard, mouse, boot management, Grub fixing, and yes a graphical file manager. All you get instead are lousy OEM recoveries, although they're a good start.

Did Google recently remove support for timers from (watch) Assistant? Last time it told me I needed to "set it in the timer app" and this time it acted like it started the timer but it didn't. That's the one thing I've been using it for and I swear I'll use Bixby instead if that's what it takes.
I've also been using it for reminders but now they're handled by Google Tasks so now I have to have that to remind myself to wash my clothes when I get home. It's stupid. It worked before. Why?!

I don't have any games on my computer anymore; those are all on the Deck. Furthermore, I try to avoid any programming or design tasks on the Deck (other than i.e. rendering or compiling), preferring to use my laptop for those.

Those of us who still think of the #Web as a document/site/blogging/whatever platform have fallen behind. It's a "minimal" app platform now. The Website is vestigial of a bygone era, like an appendix waiting to burst.
If your content fits in the oppressively minimal style (or you can force it to fit, like Wikipedia), give #Gemini a shot, and maybe set up a proxy/gateway so your capsule is still available on the biggest app platform known to mankind: Chrome.

I think my wifi chip is fried. I'm getting 1mb/s link speed on 2.4ghz and 6mb/s link speed on 5ghz and this only started happening today. I'm getting 425mb/s link speed over USB from my phone tethering internet, which isn't what I'm supposed to be getting by at least 200, but it's better than what I have without it.

I have an Overpass QL query written up that gets these, at least. The dot above "Jack Smith Park" is for the park itself.
I might refine the query to, say, hide things in parks at the higher levels, or shops that are too close to each other to see. Then again, it might be easier to do that in the app. We'll see.

Here's it looking at an area in Raleigh, NC. I made a custom style meant to go along with satellite imagery. I might try to bundle the two into one "virtual layer" once I set up the layer chooser (probably the next thing). After that I'll start with POI markers.
Today's big issue is that house numbers don't show up, despite them showing up just fine in the Maputnik style editor and before I made the custom style.
I think when I get back to this I'm going to try to fix the bridge colors, too.

today I wrote the beginnings of a #Flutter based maps app I'm calling Squirrel Maps (it or a fork might become Dahlia Maps at some point, we'll see).
I'm encountering an odd issue where if I zoom in too far (or is it too quickly?) it just refuses to render the map anymore -- won't even zoom out.

#Matrix's biggest flaw, by far, is the DAG/event graph. It's required to be fully intact at all times, which I do see they're trying to work around with sliding sync, but that's simply not enough. That graph deserves to be broken, old state should be completely deletable, old messages should be too, and STORAGE SPACE SHOULD BE SAVABLE.

After my journey today I used some of the pictures I took to map out the stores where I was at for #OpenStreetMap! I think mapping has become a bit of a hobby of mine.

I'd be glad to submit a PR to do this but I'd like to ask: how should this be represented? As an Article? As a Note with hidden content? How would the content be hidden? Should the extended content be federated at all?
Looking at the spec again, using the summary field might be plausible: the ActivityStreams Summary field (https://www.w3.org/TR/activitystreams-vocabulary/#dfn-summary) says it is to be interpreted as HTML... how does Mastodon treat this, or older versions of Calckey? How about Akkoma?

Something that bugs me a little bit about #Firefish is that, of course, Mastodon users especially can get easily overwhelmed by the long posts I sometimes make with it due to the higher rate limits.
So, how about following Tumblr's lead and introducing a "Read more" button? (NOT the CW/summary: it doesn't support markup, i.e. mentions and hashtags.) It would present a link that supporting clients can render to open the post in a full page or letterbox, and other clients can just link to it.
