Disagree. SMTP wasn't built to create a State-independent monetary system that explicitly imitates hard commodity money (i.e. gold). You can't ignore the fundamentally libertarian origins of Bitcoin.
In fact, had SMTP or for that matter NNTP actually incorporated Hashcash early on as an anti-spam protection, perhaps centralized social media never would have emerged.... Instead it was precisely naive notions of "the commons" being treated with respect that was the downfall of the early internet.
