Wikipedia describes the jump scare in the last scene of the movie like this:
"Suddenly, Carrie's bloody arm reaches from beneath the rubble and grabs Sue, who, screaming, wakes up in her bed, as her mother tries to comfort her from the nightmare."
It doesn't mention that Sue's mother grabbed her arm in exactly the same place that Carrie was grabbing it in her nightmare. Sue stares at it in horror.
She can wake up, but the nightmare is still going to be with her. Great bit of filmmaking.

I was very impressed by how the book chapters alternated between regular prose, and excerpts from newswire stories, inquests, other books, etc.
I don't know if anyone had used that trick before, but it got used since.
The original music, by Pino Donaggio, is what saved the movie (for me). I couldn't imagine the film without it.
It has been reissued on CD a few times, with some short dialogue clips, but the 1976 LP had only the music.

Yes, running PARK was vital if your HDD wasn't smart enough to park itself when it lost power.
I don't think it was included with DOS, so there were many freeware and shareware utilities to do it:

Some people may have never seen one (or even a photo of one) but the earliest IBM PC models had a big red switch on the side, built in to the PSU. It was an up/down flip switch, made of heavy plastic. It required some deliberate effort to move. It was at the rear of the case, with a black plastic surround. The metal case had a square cutout to fit it.
Powering off was done fully in hardware.
Software packages usually advised users to exit cleanly first.

I am not going to apologize for saying possibly stupid things about "AI" related nonsense, while the overall reporting conflates LLM/GPT systems with any other (less hyped) forms of what could also be termed as "AI".
When I can log into Gmail and log out again without seeing multiple links to "try some of our AI", I'll try to be more nuanced.

There was a great loophole, decades ago. You had an effective 2 month window to renew an existing TV license, or get a new one. So a new housemate could pay for a new license at the same address, every 14 months, paying in cash at the nearest post office. New name every time, 12 months plus 2 months of slack, then another mystery housemate pays for another new license, that covers the same address.
They got rid of that loophole though.

2026-09-05 17:04:45 UTC

- reply

I might check it out.
The only workable alternative to paying for a TV license is to 'prove' to the inspectors that you no longer have any devices capable of TV or radio reception, and that all antennas, dishes, and Internet links got removed. I know a few people who did that.
Practically speaking, any subscription services (cable TV, Internet plus box, etc) will just rat you out to An Post.
I know someone who lived in a Dublin 8 apartment for years, dodging the inspectors.

Some news outlets are suggesting colanders, along with other homebrew hacks, for those who couldn't buy safe eclipse glasses in time.
If you're going to use a colander (or any pinhole device) be sure to look at the projected sun on the ground, not directly through the hole.

The messages that I get from his overall approach to Fedi:
"I am an important person with important things to say."
"If you care about alt text, FUCK YOU."
"This is such a pain in the ass. You should forget about this place and follow me on bsky instead."

tl;dr - RB Reich Considered Harmful.
The bsky screenshots all have the date and time removed. They can be in dark or light mode.
The lack of alt text is a feature, luring us into giving rage bait posts more traffic on the Fediverse. Every one of them has at least one reply about the lack of alt text.
Probably an intern is putting more work into making these posts less accessible. On purpose.
He doesn't interact here, his linktree doesn't link here.
I blocked him. Less effort.

Unfashionable take, but I really liked G+ (in the early days, before the mandatory YouTube disaster).
I got in as part of the first wave of general public users, courtesy of an invite from a friend who worked for Google.
Woz was on it, and I found a lot of interesting music there (that wasn't being pushed anywhere else).
It (unsurprisingly) went to shit after they added the mandatory requirement to have a G+ account to add comments on YouTube videos.

In France, because of the metric system, they call it "métrage" - same turn of phrase, different unit.
A short film festival is called a "Fête du court métrage"; they have a lot of them happening across France in March 2026:

I recently saw a traffic spike to a small HTML-only website that never had WP on it, but was suddenly getting failed wp-admin logins and hundreds of PHP vuln scans, non stop. All from MSFT IP addresses. Abuse reports were sent, but there was no response, and the abuse kept happening.
So now I'm blocking every MSFT CIDR block that I can find, server-wide.

I know that it's part of the problem, and that by continuing to use it I'm part of the problem, but I mostly use it in "couch potato" mode on a smart TV.
Not on a computer = not 'work'.
I have to flash a replacement OS onto the smart TV soon, though, as certain apps aren't being updated for it.
Then I'll have it just as easy with all the alternatives.

In the mid 1980s, RTÉ had 3 hours of music videos every Sunday, with "MT USA" presented by Vincent Hanley.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/MT-USA
Videos from ZZ Top, Pat Benatar, and other big stars like that got played every week.

No Disco was the polar opposite, in many respects. They played new videos from local bands whose career so far was "played in more than one dive bar, more than twice, to more than 20 people each time". And some indie label acts.

WHRB (Harvard's radio station) is mostly Jazz and Classical. The overnight schedule includes 7 hours of The Record Hospital. It's billed as a Rock show, but it usually gets into some experimental stuff.
As it's in Boston, there is a good local scene to draw from.

There was a trend in the early 2000s where startups were seeing that their first 5 choices of name already had the .com domain registered by someone else, so they would pay a lot of money to a branding consultancy to come up with an original name like Smurtreo. Instead of making lowball offers to all the .com domain holders in the hope that one of them would counter with a reasonable offer.

They originally appeared on a weekly sketch show on RTÉ, "which brilliantly captured the perils that awaited British broadcasters who ventured into deepest rural Ireland:

"Each week, Kelly’s plummy-voiced English presenter visited the fictional townland of Ballykilferret, “in the Republic of Eire”, to learn about country life from local resident Gobnait O’Lunacy. O’Lunacy would spin tales of arcane native rituals for the benefit of the gullible reporter."
